Description

Engel · Hooded Merino Wool Fleece Baby Bunting

A roomy hooded wool baby bunting in 100% organic merino fleece — made in Germany since 1927

Engel's merino wool fleece bunting suit is a thick, brushed wool baby pramsuit and snowsuit built for cold-weather strolls, stroller naps, and winter outings. Roll-over cuffs cover little hands and feet, the attached hood keeps ears warm, and the loose cut leaves room for layering — all in a 100% organic merino wool fleece that's IVN BEST certified.

Engel — a German family-run mill knitting merino wool baby clothing since 1927

Engel Natur is a fourth-generation family business in Pfullingen, Germany, knitting natural-fiber baby clothes and adult clothing since 1927. They specialize in fine merino wool, wool/silk blends, and organic cotton — every piece knit and finished in their own German facility. Engel holds IVN BEST certification, the strictest organic textile standard in the world (stricter than GOTS), along with kbT certification for their wool, which means the fleece comes from controlled organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards including no mulesing.

If you've come across Engel through European parenting communities, Waldorf schools, or babywearing circles, you already know why parents reach for these pieces. If they're new to you, this wool bunting suit is a fitting introduction to the brand.

A cold-weather wool baby bunting for stroller, sling, and winter walks

This is a mid-to-heavy-weight piece designed for the coldest months — think of it as a wool snowsuit and pramsuit in one. Wool fleece has more insulation than thin merino interlock or wool/silk, making this bunting the right choice when the temperature drops below about 50°F (10°C). Most parents reach for it on winter walks, in the stroller (where its pramsuit-style cut shines), in a baby carrier or sling, and for car-seat-friendly outings where a bulky synthetic snowsuit doesn't work well.

Cool fall

50–60°F · 10–15°C

Wear over a thin cotton or merino wool base layer. The fleece alone is enough warmth for most fall walks.

Cold winter

30–50°F · -1–10°C

Layer over a wool or wool/silk base layer. Roll cuffs over hands and feet. Add a wool baby hat under the hood for extra coverage.

Deep cold

Below 30°F · Below -1°C

Use as an insulating layer under a windproof shell or boiled wool walker, with wool mittens and warm boots.

Not for indoor wear or sleep

Wool fleece this thick is genuinely warm — it's outerwear, not a sleeper or sleep sack. Indoors, your baby will overheat. For sleep, look at Engel's thinner merino or wool/silk rompers, or a Reiff or Disana wool sleep sack rated for the room temperature.

100% organic merino wool fleece, knit and finished in Germany

Fiber

100% organic merino wool fleece. Fine, soft fibers (Engel uses 18–19 micron merino) brushed to a plush, even pile on both sides for warmth and softness against delicate baby skin.

Fabric weight

Approximately 280–320 GSM brushed wool fleece — a true mid-to-heavy outerwear weight. Warmer than knitted merino interlock at the same thickness because the brushed pile traps insulating air against the body.

Construction

One-piece footed coverall (bunting suit) with attached hood, fold-over cuffs at hands and feet, and a front button placket. Closures are tagua nut buttons — a natural, durable plant-based alternative to plastic.

Country of origin

Knit and sewn in Pfullingen, Germany at Engel's own family-run facility. No outsourced manufacturing.

Certifications

IVN BEST — the strictest natural-textile standard available. kbT — controlled organic livestock farming with mulesing-free, animal-welfare-audited wool sourcing.

What's not in it

No synthetic fibers, no chlorine bleaching, no chemical softeners, no flame retardants, no nickel hardware. Dyed only with low-impact, natural-textile-certified dyes.

Four reasons this merino wool baby bunting earns its spot in the closet

Temperature-regulating, not just warm

Merino wool's crimped fiber structure traps body heat in the cold and releases it when your baby gets active or naps in a warm car. Less overheating, fewer mid-walk meltdowns, and more even body temperature than synthetic fleece.

Stays warm even when damp

Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet, and it keeps insulating even when damp. Light snow, drool, a leaky bottle — none of it leaves your baby cold the way synthetic fleece does.

Roomy cut with roll-over cuffs

Cut generously through the body, sleeves, and legs so it layers easily over a base layer or pajamas without binding. Built-in fold-over cuffs at the sleeves and legs cover hands and feet on the coldest days, and roll back down as your baby grows into the size.

Naturally odor-resistant

Merino's natural lanolin and the structure of the fiber resist bacteria growth, which means this bunting can be worn many times between washes. Air it out overnight and it's ready to go again.

European sizing by age and height — and a real note on fit

Engel uses European sizing where the number on the label corresponds to your child's height in centimeters. The bunting is cut loose and roomy on purpose — generous through the body, sleeves, and legs so it layers comfortably over a base layer or pajamas and grows with your baby across at least two seasons.

Size Approx. age Child's height
EU 50/56 0–3 months (newborn) up to 56 cm / 22 in
EU 62/68 3–6 months 57–68 cm / 22–27 in
EU 74/80 6–12 months 69–80 cm / 27–31 in
EU 86/92 1–2 years 81–92 cm / 32–36 in
This bunting fits loose and roomy — buy your current size

The Engel wool bunting is intentionally cut with a relaxed, oversized silhouette so it layers easily and accommodates growth — verified buyers consistently mention this. Order the size your baby wears now, not the next size up. The roll-over cuffs handle any extra length at hands and feet, and the loose body shape gives wiggle room without slipping off the shoulders.

Who this wool bunting suit is right for — and where it isn't the answer

Best for

Parents in cold-winter regions who do regular stroller walks, babywearing, or outdoor outings with a baby. Anyone wanting a long-lived natural-fiber piece that can pass to a sibling. Babies with sensitive skin or eczema who don't tolerate synthetic fleece. Families who prioritize certified organic, mulesing-free, German-made baby winter clothes.

Honest trade-offs

This is a premium heritage piece at a premium price. It is genuinely warm, so it isn't a year-round bunting — it's outerwear for the cold months. Wool fleece this thick is also more substantial than synthetic fleece of similar weight, which is part of its insulating performance but worth knowing if you expect a featherweight feel.

The care commitment

Wool requires hand washing or a wool/delicate machine cycle in cold water with a wool-specific detergent. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will felt and shrink the bunting permanently. The good news: wool's natural odor resistance means it rarely needs full washing — most parents wash these pieces only a handful of times per season.

How to wash and store this wool bunting so it lasts through multiple kids

Hand wash or wool cycle
Cold water only
Wool-specific detergent
Lay flat to dry
No tumble drying
Air between wears

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan, Sonett wool wash, or similar), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring or twist. Lay flat on a clean towel to reshape and air dry away from direct heat or sunlight.

Between washes, hang the bunting in a well-aired spot. Wool releases odor naturally and resists bacterial growth, so most spots can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and most "is it dirty?" questions are answered by an overnight airing. With this care routine, parents commonly pass these wool baby clothes to a second or third child.

Frequently asked questions

Will the wool feel itchy on my baby's skin?

Engel uses fine merino wool in the 18–19 micron range, which is meaningfully different from coarse wool — most babies and sensitive-skinned adults find it soft and comfortable. That said, this is wool fleece worn as outerwear, usually over a base layer, so there's typically a thin cotton or wool/silk piece between the bunting and your baby's skin anyway. If your baby has reacted to wool before, start with a wool/silk blend base layer underneath as a buffer.

How warm is this merino wool baby bunting? Will my baby overheat?

It's a true cold-weather piece — approximately 280–320 GSM brushed merino wool fleece, comparable in warmth to a synthetic fleece bunting at the same weight, but with merino's natural temperature regulation that helps prevent overheating. Most parents use it from the low 50s°F down to the 20s°F (10°C to -7°C), with thinner layering at the warmer end and an outer shell at the colder end. Indoors or in a heated car for long stretches, take the bunting off — it's outerwear, not a sleeper.

What size should I order?

Order the size your baby currently wears, not the next size up. This bunting is cut loose and roomy by design — generous through the body, sleeves, and legs — and the roll-over cuffs handle any extra length at hands and feet. Sizing up too aggressively means it will slip off shoulders and gape at the neck. The relaxed silhouette is the intended fit, not a sign that you should size down.

Is it waterproof? Can my baby wear it in snow or rain?

Wool fleece is naturally water-resistant and stays warm even when damp, so light snow, drizzle, and quick spills are no issue. It is not waterproof, however — for steady rain or wet snow, layer a waterproof shell or rain cover over the bunting.

Is this a snowsuit, a pramsuit, or a bunting?

All three terms apply. In North America, parents most often call this a wool baby bunting or a wool snowsuit. In the UK and Europe, the same one-piece footed coverall is called a pramsuit because it's the classic piece for stroller (pram) outings. Whatever you call it, the function is the same: a hooded, footed, full-body wool layer for cold-weather wear.

What does IVN BEST certification mean?

IVN BEST is the strictest natural-textile certification available worldwide — stricter than GOTS. It requires 100% certified organic natural fibers (no synthetic blends), the strictest controls on dyes and finishing chemicals, and full traceability through the supply chain. When a piece is IVN BEST certified, you have the highest level of assurance that it's free from harmful chemicals at every production stage.

What is kbT wool?

kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) is a German certification meaning "controlled organic livestock farming." It guarantees the wool comes from sheep raised under strict organic and animal-welfare standards — including no mulesing, no chemical sheep dips, organic feed, and audited grazing conditions.

Why is this more expensive than a polyester fleece bunting?

A few reasons. Engel knits in their own German facility, not an outsourced contractor. The wool is certified organic and mulesing-free. Construction includes natural tagua nut buttons rather than plastic. And these pieces routinely last across multiple children — many families pass them down through siblings, which changes the per-use cost considerably. You're paying for fiber, certification, country of manufacture, and longevity.

A note on Engel's heritage

Engel Natur is one of a small handful of European mills still knitting and sewing baby clothing entirely in-house. The same family has run the company since 1927, and the IVN BEST and kbT certifications they hold are the most demanding standards available in natural-fiber apparel. When you see Engel on a label, you're looking at nearly a century of fine merino expertise, made in Germany.

    Wool snowsuit

Published by Ashley Vandezande on Nov 15th 2021

We love this snow suit! I ordered the 3/6 month size because reviews said it ran big. It does, but I’m okay with it being a bit big. This just means it will fit my son longer. We were recently outside in 40* Fahrenheit for 2-3 hours and my sons nose didn’t even get cold in the suit. When I took him out of it her was delightfully warm, but not sweaty at all. Definitely recommend this snowsuit!

    Wonderful for winter

Published by Allison on Nov 7th 2019

As several reviews mention, this runs rather large. We purchased the 0 - 24 month and our 12 month old will likely get two years use out of this. We simply rolled up the sleeves and pant legs. Otherwise, excellent quality, warm and roomy.
