Three European brands, three different wool bottom styles

Our baby and kids bottoms collection draws on the specialties of three German family-run manufacturers. Each contributes a distinct style — from thin base-layer leggings to warm fleece pants to structured boiled wool trousers — all using certified organic wool processed without harsh chemicals.

Engel

German family business since 1927. Source for thin merino and wool-silk leggings and base-layer bottoms. Generous cut through the seat to fit over diapers. IVN BEST certified — the strictest organic textile standard available.

Reiff

Family-run knitting company in southwestern Germany. Source for warm wool fleece pants and cozy pull-on trousers — plush, pajama-like, and knitted in-house using certified organic yarns.

Disana

German specialists in boiled wool since the 1970s. Source for structured boiled wool pants and winter-ready trousers designed for outdoor wear. GOTS certified.

Buying tips for wool bottoms

Starting wardrobe: 2-3 pairs per size

Most parents find 2 to 3 pairs of wool bottoms per size is a good starting wardrobe — often one thin legging for everyday layering and one or two warmer fleece or boiled wool pants for cooler days. Wool needs washing far less often than cotton (every 3-5 wears), and bottoms tend to stay cleaner than tops since they aren't exposed to drool and spit-up, so fewer pairs go further than you might expect.

Sizing: measure by height, allow for diapers

European children's wool sizing is based on height in centimeters rather than age. Measure your child's height flat and pick the size closest to that number. Wool bottoms from our European brands are generally cut with a generous seat to accommodate cloth or disposable diapers — especially Engel and Reiff baby sizes. For toddlers in bulky cloth diapers, or if you're between sizes, sizing up gives more diaper room and lets the piece grow with your child.

Leggings vs fleece pants vs boiled wool

Merino leggings (Engel) are thin, stretchy, and designed to layer under pants, skirts, or pajamas for warmth without bulk. Wool fleece pants (Reiff) are plushier and warmer, often worn as standalone pants at home or for casual outings. Boiled wool pants (Disana) are the warmest and most structured, built for outdoor wear in cold weather. Most families start with leggings for everyday use and add fleece or boiled wool pants for the season.

Common questions about wool bottoms for kids

What's the difference between wool leggings and wool fleece pants?

Merino wool leggings (from Engel) are thin, smooth, and stretchy — designed to layer under pants, skirts, or pajamas for warmth without adding bulk. They're typically worn close to the body. Wool fleece pants (from Reiff) are plushier and warmer, with a soft interior surface. They're usually worn as standalone pants at home or for casual outings. For cold-weather outdoor wear, boiled wool pants (from Disana) are the warmest option. More on wool fabric types →

Will wool bottoms fit over my baby's cloth diapers?

Yes. Wool bottoms from our European brands — especially Engel and Reiff in baby sizes — are generally cut with a generous seat to accommodate both cloth and disposable diapers. For bulky overnight cloth diapers or if you're between sizes, sizing up gives more diaper room and also lets the piece last longer as your child grows. Each product page shows specific measurements to check against your diaper.

How many wool bottoms should I buy for my child?

Most parents find 2 to 3 pairs per size is a good starting wardrobe — usually one thin merino legging for everyday layering and one or two warmer fleece or boiled wool pants for cold days. Bottoms tend to stay cleaner than tops since they're less exposed to drool and spit-up, so fewer pairs go further than with tops. Wool also needs washing far less often than cotton — every 3 to 5 wears instead of daily.

How do I choose the right size?

European children's wool sizing is based on height in centimeters, not age. Measure your child's height flat and pick the European size closest to that number. Size 56 fits newborns, 68 fits 3-6 months, 74 fits 6-9 months, 80 fits about 12 months, 86 fits about 18 months, and 92 fits about 2 years — sizes continue in 6 cm increments through 176. When between sizes, sizing up gives more room for diapers and allows the piece to grow with your child. See our full sizing guide →

Can wool leggings be worn as pajama bottoms?

Yes. Thin merino or wool-silk leggings work well as pajama bottoms, especially for cooler nights. They add warmth without the bulk of heavier pajama pants and help regulate temperature through the night. Some parents layer wool leggings under cotton pajama pants on very cold nights for extra warmth, or use wool leggings alone with a pajama top.

How often should I wash wool bottoms?

Less often than cotton — typically every 3 to 5 wears, and often less for bottoms specifically since they're not exposed to drool and spit-up the way tops are. Wool is naturally odor-resistant, so airing the garment out between wears handles most situations. Spot-clean small stains and wash when items are visibly soiled. Hand-wash in cool water with a wool-safe (enzyme-free) detergent and lay flat to dry. See our complete wool care guide →

Can I return wool bottoms if the size is wrong?

Yes. Wool bottoms can be returned within our standard return window as long as they are unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with tags attached. For best fit, we recommend measuring your child before ordering and checking each brand's size chart on the individual product page. See our returns page for full details →
