Engel · 100% Organic Merino Wool Base Layer
Kids Merino Wool Leggings — Thermal Base Layer Long Johns
Fine-knit 100% organic merino wool leggings from Engel, the German natural fiber maker since 1927. A breathable, temperature-regulating base layer for ages 2–13 — warm under winter clothes, light enough for spring layering, and soft enough to sleep in.
The Brand
Engel Natur — nearly a century of German wool
Engel has been making natural fiber clothing in Pfullingen, Germany since 1927 — one of the most respected names in European wool apparel. Roughly 95% of Engel's collection carries the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or IVN BEST certification, two of the world's strictest standards for organic textiles. Production happens in Engel's own workshop and partner mills within about 40–50 km of the factory, with fair wages and verified working conditions throughout.
The merino wool itself comes from organically raised, mulesing-free sheep, processed and knitted in Germany. No heavy metals, no AZO dyes, no chemical finishes — just wool the way it has been done well for generations.
When to Wear It
Year-round comfort, three ways to wear
These thermal leggings are designed as a true base layer — thin enough to layer smoothly under pants, leggings, ski pants, or a skirt without bulk, and warm enough to wear on their own around the house. Wool's natural temperature regulation means the same pair keeps your child warm on a cold January morning and comfortable on a cool September evening. They also make excellent pajama bottoms, since merino wool breathes and wicks moisture in a way cotton sleepwear simply cannot.
Winter base layer
Under jeans, leggings, snow pants, or school uniforms. Adds warmth without bulk.
Spring & fall standalone
Wear as everyday lightweight leggings on cooler days, indoors or out.
Year-round pajamas
Wool regulates temperature through the night and resists odors, so kids sleep cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Sensitive skin
Untreated, hypoallergenic fiber with no chemical finishes — suitable for children with eczema or wool sensitivities (see honest assessment below).
Materials & Construction
What's actually in these leggings
Fiber
100% organic virgin merino wool (kbT — certified organic livestock farming). Yarn micron count approximately 21.5 microns — fine enough for next-to-skin wear on most children.
Fabric weight
Approximately 180 g/m² (GSM). A light-to-mid weight fine knit — thin enough to layer smoothly under regular pants without bulk, substantial enough to wear on their own as everyday leggings or pajama bottoms.
Knit
Fine interlock knit. Stretches comfortably with movement and recovers its shape. Flat seams to avoid skin irritation.
Origin
Knitted, dyed, and sewn in Germany. Wool fiber from certified organic merino sheep, processed in Europe.
Certifications
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and/or IVN BEST — the latter being the most stringent natural textile certification available, requiring 100% certified organic natural fiber.
Dyes
Free from heavy metals, free from harmful AZO dyes, no chemical finishes. Nickel-free elastics and trims.
Why Merino Wool
What pure wool does that synthetics and cotton can't
Temperature-regulating
Merino actively responds to body temperature, warming when cold and releasing heat when warm. Independent testing shows wool/wool-silk fabrics also provide natural UV protection from UPF 22 up to UPF 50 depending on color and weight.
Moisture-wicking
Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp — far more than cotton — and it stays insulating even when wet.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool's structure resists odor-causing bacteria, so these leggings can be worn multiple times between washes. Airing them out overnight is often enough.
Hypoallergenic & untreated
No flame retardants, pesticides, or chemical softeners. A clean choice for children with eczema or sensitive skin.
Sizing
European size chart — by height
Engel uses European sizing based on the child's full height in centimeters. Age ranges below are estimates and may vary. European sizing tends to run slightly slim — if your child is tall for their age or near the top of an age range, size up.

Sizing tip
Measure your child's full standing height (head to heel, no shoes) and match it to the EU cm value. Wool knit has good four-way stretch, so a snug fit is comfortable — but for layering under bulkier pants or for longer growth, going up one size is a safe choice.
Honest Assessment
Who these work well for — and where to look elsewhere
Best for
Children who run cold, need a low-bulk base layer under winter clothes, sleep hot in cotton pajamas, or have sensitive skin that reacts to synthetic fabrics and chemical finishes. Also a strong choice for families committed to certified organic, fair-production clothing.
Be aware
At ~21.5 microns, this is fine merino — soft enough for most kids — but a small percentage of children still react to any wool. If your child has had a clear reaction to wool before, start with a wool/silk blend instead (typically 19.5 micron yarn, even softer hand). These leggings are also a lightweight base layer at 180 g/m²: substantial enough to wear alone indoors, but not a heavy outdoor pant on their own in deep cold — pair with an outer layer.
Care commitment
Wool needs gentle washing — cold water, wool wash, lay flat to dry. No hot water, no tumble dryer. Once you learn the routine it's simple, and wool needs washing far less often than cotton. With proper care these leggings last years and are commonly handed down between siblings.
Care
How to wash wool leggings without ruining them
Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water (up to 30°C / 86°F) Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No fabric softener
Hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash, or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Gently press water out — never wring or twist. Lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat. Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing; airing between wears is often all that's needed. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth rather than washing the whole garment.

FAQ
Common questions about Engel wool leggings
Will these leggings itch my child?
At approximately 21.5 microns, Engel's merino is fine enough to feel soft against most children's skin — meaningfully different from the coarse, scratchy wool many adults remember from childhood. If your child has reacted to wool before or is unusually sensitive, the Engel wool/silk leggings (70% merino, 30% silk, ~19.5 micron yarn) are the gentlest option and are usually a successful first wool layer.
What is the fabric weight (GSM)?
Approximately 180 g/m². This is a light-to-mid weight — thin enough to layer smoothly under pants without bulk, substantial enough to wear on their own as everyday leggings or pajama bottoms.
Can these be machine washed?
Yes. Engel's current 100% wool collection uses a mechanical plasma process (no chemicals) that makes the fabric machine washable on the wool/delicate cycle at up to 30°C (86°F) with cold water and wool wash. We still recommend hand washing for the longest fabric life. Never tumble dry — always lay flat.
What's the difference between these and the wool/silk version?
The 100% wool leggings (~180 g/m²) are slightly more substantial in feel and more elastic, with stronger thermal performance for cold weather. The wool/silk leggings (~190 g/m², 70/30 merino/silk) have a softer hand and subtle sheen from the silk — gentler for sensitive skin, with a smoother drape. Many families own both: wool/silk for milder weather and sleep, 100% wool for winter base layering.
Do these have a waistband or drawstring?
A flat soft elastic waistband, no drawstring — safe for sleep and easy for kids to pull on themselves. Elastics and any trims used by Engel are nickel-free and tested for harmful substances.
Is the wool mulesing-free?
Yes. Engel sources from certified organic merino farms (kbT — controlled organic livestock farming) where mulesing is prohibited and animal welfare is part of the certification. Their wool is supplied primarily from South American organic farms.
Are these warm enough as a winter pant on their own?
Indoors and around the house, yes — they're warm and cozy. For outdoor winter wear in cold climates they're designed to work as a base layer under regular pants, snow pants, or leggings. For a heavier standalone wool pant, look at Engel's terry wool pants or Disana boiled wool pants.
Where are these made?
Made in Germany. Engel knits, dyes, and sews in its own facility in Pfullingen and partner workshops within about 50 km, under GOTS- and IVN BEST-certified production conditions.
