About our wool
Three European brands, three wool constructions
Our sweaters and jackets collection spans three different wool constructions — knit wool for indoor layering, plush wool fleece for mid-weight warmth, and boiled wool for true outerwear. Three German family-run manufacturers contribute to the range, all using certified organic wool processed without harsh chemicals.
Disana
German specialists in boiled wool since the 1970s. Our source for boiled wool jackets and winter coats — wind-resistant, water-repellent, and durable enough to serve as outerwear through multiple children. GOTS certified.
Reiff
Family-run knitting company in southwestern Germany. Source for soft knit wool sweaters, cardigans, and plush wool fleece jackets — made in-house using certified organic yarns. Best for indoor layering and mild-weather outdoor wear.
Engel
German family business since 1927. Source for lighter knit wool and wool-silk cardigans and layering pieces. IVN BEST certified — the strictest organic textile standard available.
What to know
Buying tips for wool sweaters and jackets
Starting wardrobe: 1-2 indoor, 1 outdoor per season
Most families find 1 to 2 wool sweaters or cardigans per size for indoor layering, plus one mid-weight or outdoor jacket per cold season, covers their needs. Wool outerwear is known for multi-child longevity, so you often only need one jacket per size that gets passed down. For shoulder seasons (spring and fall), a single wool fleece jacket handles most conditions.
Match the construction to the use case
Knit wool sweaters and cardigans (Engel and Reiff) are for indoor layering and mild outdoor wear. Plush wool fleece jackets (Reiff) are mid-weight — warmer than knit sweaters, great for shoulder seasons, indoor cool-weather use, and playground wear in mild cold. Boiled wool jackets (Disana) are true outerwear — wind-resistant and water-repellent for serious cold, snow, and light rain. Getting the weight right for the use case is the biggest decision on this page.
Size up for layering room
Wool jackets are often worn over other clothing — base layers, long-sleeve tops, and sometimes additional sweaters. When choosing a jacket, sizing up gives room for layers underneath without restricting movement. This is especially important for boiled wool winter jackets. For cardigans worn primarily indoors as a top layer over a single shirt, sizing true-to-height in the European size chart works well.

Common questions about wool sweaters and jackets
What's the difference between knit wool, wool fleece, and boiled wool?
Knit wool sweaters and cardigans (from Engel and Reiff) are flexible, lighter-weight pieces designed for indoor layering, mild outdoor wear, and transitional seasons. Wool fleece jackets (from Reiff) are plusher and warmer — mid-weight, cozy, and great for shoulder seasons, cool indoor spaces, and mild outdoor wear. Boiled wool jackets (from Disana) are densely felted — thick, wind-resistant, water-repellent, and designed as true outerwear for cold and wet conditions. Getting the weight right for the use case is the most common buying decision. More on wool fabric types →
Is boiled wool waterproof?
Boiled wool is water-repellent but not fully waterproof. The dense felting process creates a tight fiber structure that sheds light rain, snow, and wind without absorbing moisture quickly. In heavy or sustained rain, water eventually penetrates. Unlike synthetic waterproof jackets, boiled wool's water resistance comes from the fabric structure itself rather than from chemical treatments like PFAS-based coatings. For everyday cold-weather wear, light rain, and snow, boiled wool performs well.
Will a wool sweater itch my child?
Quality merino wool sweaters are not itchy for most children. Merino fibers are typically 17-20 microns in diameter, compared to 30+ microns for the coarse wool that causes the itchy reputation. Our sweaters and cardigans from Engel and Reiff use fine merino wool, and the knit constructions are designed for next-to-skin wearability. For children with very sensitive skin, wool-silk blends from Engel are an even softer option. Wool fleece jackets are warmer and softer than knit wool but typically worn over a base layer. Boiled wool is worn over other clothing rather than directly against skin. More on wool and itchiness →
Is a wool fleece jacket warm enough for winter?
Wool fleece jackets from Reiff are mid-weight — warmer than knit sweaters but lighter than boiled wool outerwear. They work well as standalone jackets for mild cold, shoulder seasons (fall and spring), and cool indoor-to-outdoor transitions. For true winter weather — sustained cold, wind, and wet — a boiled wool jacket from Disana is the better choice, either as standalone outerwear or layered over a wool fleece jacket on the coldest days.
How many wool sweaters and jackets does my child need?
Most families find 1 to 2 wool sweaters or cardigans per size for indoor layering, plus 1 mid-weight or outdoor jacket per cold season, covers their needs. Wool is durable enough that a single cardigan lasts a season of daily wear with proper care. Boiled wool jackets from Disana are especially long-lasting — many families pass them down through two or three children before they're still in good enough condition to hand on.
How do I choose the right size?
European children's wool sizing is based on height in centimeters rather than age. Measure your child's height flat and pick the European size closest to that number. For outdoor jackets worn over other clothing — especially boiled wool coats — sizing up gives room for base layers and sweaters underneath without restricting movement. For cardigans worn primarily indoors as a top layer over a single shirt, sizing true-to-height works well. Each brand's product page shows specific measurements. See our full sizing guide →
Can I return wool sweaters and jackets?
Yes. Wool sweaters and jackets can be returned within our standard return window as long as they are unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with tags attached. For best fit, we recommend measuring your child before ordering and checking each brand's size chart on the individual product page. See our returns page for full details →
