Description

Engel · Organic Merino Wool Fleece Hooded Jacket

A heritage German wool jacket that feels like your favorite fleece — only better for your child and the planet.

Engel's hooded merino wool jacket is crafted in Germany from 100% organic wool fleece (280 g/m²) with classic wooden buttons and a generous hood. Naturally warm, breathable, and temperature-regulating — the way merino wool baby clothes have always been done. IVN BEST and GOTS certified. Sizes 0-3 months through 4-6 years.

Engel: a German merino wool maker since 1927.

Engel Natur is one of the original champions of organic merino wool baby clothing. Established in Germany nearly a century ago, the family-run company has built its reputation on a single principle: the finest organic merino wool, processed without harmful chemicals, made entirely in Germany. The merino sheep are raised organically and mulesing-free on pesticide-free pastures, and every dye Engel uses is free from heavy metals and AZO compounds.

This baby wool jacket carries Engel's most rigorous certification — IVN BEST — alongside GOTS organic certification, meaning every step from fiber to finished cardigan meets the strictest ecological and social standards in the textile industry. For parents seeking authentic organic merino wool clothing for their child, Engel is one of the most respected names in Europe.

A three-season hooded wool jacket your child will reach for first.

At 280 g/m², this is a true mid-weight wool fleece — substantial enough to be a stand-alone outer layer in fall and spring, and warm enough to layer underneath a heavier coat or rain shell in winter. Because organic merino wool actively regulates body temperature, your child won't overheat the way they would in a polyester fleece, even during active play. It works as a baby wool jacket, a toddler everyday cardigan, and a kids hooded wool coat all in one piece.

Spring & Fall

Stand-alone wool jacket

Roughly 45-65°F / 7-18°C. Wear directly over a t-shirt, merino wool base layer, or onesie. The hood and wooden button closure block wind on cool mornings and breezy afternoons.

Winter

Insulating mid-layer

Layer underneath a winter coat, snowsuit, or boiled wool walker. The wool fleece traps warm air and wicks moisture, keeping your child dry through snowy play and cold school runs.

Indoors & Travel

Cozy everyday cardigan

Cool houses, drafty cars, air-conditioned planes, evening playdates. Light enough to wear all day without overheating — a true baby winter clothes wool essential.

100% organic merino wool fleece, 280 g/m², made in Germany.

Fiber

100% organic virgin merino wool. Fine, finely crimped fibers that don't itch and feel soft against sensitive skin. Mulesing-free.

Weight (GSM)

280 g/m² — true mid-weight wool fleece. Plush and substantial without being bulky or restricting movement.

Construction

Knitted merino wool brushed to a soft pile — the same look and feel as synthetic fleece, but made entirely from wool. Wooden buttons, soft ribbed cuffs, and a generous lined hood.

Origin

Knit and sewn in Germany by Engel Natur. Organic merino wool sourced from certified mulesing-free farms.

Certifications

IVN BEST (the strictest organic textile standard worldwide) and GOTS organic. kbT-certified wool from controlled organic livestock farming.

Closures & hardware

Natural wooden buttons. No nickel, no plastic snaps, no synthetic linings. Fully biodegradable at end of life.

What organic merino wool fleece does that synthetic fleece can't.

Naturally temperature-regulating

Merino wool warms when it's cold and breathes when it's not. Your child stays comfortable across a wider range of temperatures than synthetic fleece allows — the defining quality of true merino wool clothing.

Wind-resistant & water-repellent

The dense wool fleece pile blocks wind and naturally repels light moisture, dirt, and odors. It needs washing far less often than cotton or synthetic alternatives.

Soft on sensitive skin

Fine merino fibers don't itch. The fleece pile is plush and gentle — a popular choice for babies and kids with eczema or skin sensitivities.

Odor-resistant & low-wash

Wool's natural fiber structure resists odor bacteria. Air it out between wears and you'll rarely need a full wash — saving the fabric and your time.

Built to outlast childhood

Heritage German construction with wooden buttons and reinforced seams. Made to be passed between siblings or handed down — the long-term economy of natural fiber baby wool clothes.

Clean materials, head to toe

No flame retardants, no PFAS, no microplastics, no AZO dyes. Just organic merino wool and wooden buttons. Biodegradable at the end of its life.

European sizing by age and height — and this jacket runs generously.

Age EU Size Child's Height
0-3 months 50/56 49.5-56 cm / 19.5-22 in
3-6 months 62/68 62-68 cm / 24.5-27 in
6-12 months 74/80 74-80 cm / 29-31.5 in
12-24 months 86/92 86-92 cm / 33.5-36 in
2-4 years 98/104 98-104 cm / 38.5-41 in
4-6 years 110/116 110-116 cm / 43.5-45.5 in
Important: this jacket runs large.
Engel wool fleece pieces are deliberately cut roomy to accommodate base layers, growth, and longevity. Unlike most European wool brands — where we recommend sizing up — for this jacket we recommend choosing your child's true age size. If your child is petite, smaller-than-average, or you want a closer fit, size down. The jacket is designed to last 12-18 months at each size.

An honest look at this wool jacket.

It works really well for...

Families looking to replace polyester fleece with an organic merino wool alternative. Babies and kids with sensitive skin or eczema. Cooler climates where a true three-season baby wool jacket is the workhorse of the wardrobe. Parents who value heritage construction and want pieces that last through multiple children.

Trade-offs to know about

It's water-resistant, not waterproof — fine for snow and light rain, but layer a shell over it for sustained downpours. The jacket is mid-weight at 280 g/m², so for the coldest winter days you'll want to layer it under a heavier coat. Heritage European wool isn't inexpensive, but the fiber, certifications, and German construction justify the price.

Care commitment

Wool needs gentler care than cotton — cold water, wool wash, and lay-flat drying. Tumble drying or hot water will felt and shrink the fleece. The good news: wool naturally resists odor and dirt, so it needs full washing far less often than you'd expect. Most wears just need airing out.

How to wash organic merino wool fleece.

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water, max 30°C Wool wash detergent Low spin, max 400 rpm Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No fabric softener

Wool naturally resists dirt and odor, so frequent washing isn't needed — airing the jacket between wears is usually enough. When a wash is required, use a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash) in cold water, on a wool/delicate cycle or by hand. Press water out gently using a towel — never wring or twist. Lay flat to reshape and air dry, away from direct heat or radiators. Heat damages wool fibers and causes felting.

Don't wash before first wear
Engel garments contain no harmful chemicals or finishes that need to be washed off. Use the jacket straight out of the package — washing too early just adds unnecessary wear.

Common questions about the Engel wool jacket.

Does merino wool itch on baby skin?
Engel uses fine, finely crimped organic merino — typically 17-19 microns — which is meaningfully softer than coarse traditional wool. The vast majority of babies and sensitive-skinned children wear it comfortably, and many parents specifically choose merino wool baby clothes for kids with eczema. If your child has reacted strongly to wool before, start with a wool/silk merino wool base layer underneath as a buffer.
Is this baby wool jacket warmer than synthetic fleece?
At equivalent weight, organic wool fleece is warmer than synthetic fleece, and it regulates temperature far better — meaning your child won't overheat during active play and won't get clammy when they cool down. It also blocks wind more effectively than most polyester fleece.
Is the Engel hooded wool jacket waterproof?
It's water-resistant, not waterproof. Wool fleece naturally repels light moisture and snow flurries, but in sustained rain you'll want a shell layer over the top. For most fall, spring, and dry winter weather it works as a stand-alone outer layer.
What size should I order? I've heard Engel runs large.
Yes — this jacket runs generously. Choose your child's true age size if you want it to fit for a year or more. If your child is petite or you want a closer fit, size down. Multiple parents report a single size lasting 12-18 months thanks to the roomy cut and growth allowance built into Engel's pattern.
What's the difference between IVN BEST and GOTS?
Both are organic textile certifications, but IVN BEST is stricter. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) requires at least 95% organic fiber and regulates the entire processing chain. IVN BEST requires 100% organic fiber and applies even tighter limits on chemicals, dyes, and processing. This Engel wool jacket carries both certifications.
Will the wool fleece jacket shrink in the wash?
Only if it's washed incorrectly. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will cause wool to felt and shrink. Wash it in cold water on a wool cycle (or by hand), use wool wash detergent, and lay flat to dry — and the jacket will hold its shape for years.
Where does Engel's merino wool come from, and is it mulesing-free?
Engel sources organic merino wool from certified mulesing-free farms. The wool is then knit, brushed, and sewn in Germany. The sheep are raised organically without pesticides on either pastures or animals — a standard required by both kbT (controlled organic animal husbandry) and IVN BEST.

A wool jacket your child will live in — and you'll hand down.

The Engel Organic Merino Wool Fleece Hooded Jacket is a one-piece replacement for synthetic fleece that delivers more warmth, better breathability, and a far cleaner material story — with the German construction to outlast childhood and the heritage to be handed down.

    Lovely jacket, runs very large

Amazing warm jacket, but runs very large. I initially ordered the 6-12 month size for my 4 month old who normally wears 9 months clothing, and it looked as though it would fit her when she was 3-4 years old! It was easy to return and we sized down to the 3-6 month size, and I still expect that it will fit her until she is about 18 months. I'm happy with that fit, however, since the jacket was an investment and I hope to be able to use it for more than a season.
