Buying tips for baby and kids sleepwear

Match sleepwear to your nursery temperature

Sleep sacks come in different weights (measured in TOG ratings) designed for different room temperatures. A lightweight 1.0 TOG sleep sack is appropriate for rooms around 64-75°F (18-24°C), while a heavier 2.5-3.5 TOG sleep sack is appropriate for rooms below 68°F (20°C). Measuring your baby's room temperature and choosing the right weight is more important than dressing baby warmly by feel. Our product pages list specific TOG ratings and temperature recommendations.

Follow safe-sleep guidelines

For infants under 12 months, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and similar organizations recommend sleep on a firm surface without loose bedding, pillows, or soft toys. Wearable sleep sacks are designed specifically to provide warmth without loose blankets, which is why they've become the standard for safer infant sleep. Once your child is old enough per pediatric guidance (typically around 12 months), traditional pajamas with a light blanket become appropriate. Always follow your pediatrician's specific recommendations.

Starting wardrobe: 2-3 sleep garments per size

For infants, 2 to 3 sleep sacks per size is a practical starting point — one to wear, one in the wash, sometimes a third as backup. Choose weights based on your typical nursery temperature across the year, possibly adding a lighter and a heavier option for seasonal variation. For toddlers transitioning to pajamas, 3 to 4 pairs of cotton PJs plus 1-2 wool base layers for layering underneath on cold nights covers most needs.

Common questions about baby and kids sleepwear

What's the difference between a wool sleep sack and a cotton pajama?

Wool sleep sacks are wearable blankets designed for infants, providing warmth without loose bedding. They zip or button around the baby and use wool's natural temperature regulation to maintain a stable body temperature through the night. Cotton pajamas are traditional two-piece sleepwear for toddlers and older children who have moved beyond the infant sleep-sack stage. For infants under 12 months, pediatric safe-sleep guidelines generally recommend wearable sleep sacks over loose blankets. For older children, cotton pajamas with a wool base layer underneath is a common combination for cold nights.

Which TOG rating should I choose for my baby's sleep sack?

TOG ratings measure fabric warmth and should be matched to nursery temperature. For warmer rooms around 64-75°F (18-24°C), a 1.0 TOG sleep sack is appropriate — for example, our Reiff Merino Wool and Silk wearable blanket. For rooms around 61-68°F (16-20°C), a 2.5 TOG sleep sack works well — our Reiff merino wool fleece sack. For the coldest rooms below 64°F (18°C), a 3.5 TOG sleep sack like our Reiff merino-and-cotton-sherpa sack provides the most warmth. Disana's boiled wool Schlafsack sits around 1.7-1.8 TOG, well-suited for rooms around 61-68°F. Specific temperature guidance is listed on each product page.

Are wool sleep sacks safe for newborns?

Wool sleep sacks have properties many parents value in infant sleepwear: they're naturally breathable, flame-resistant without chemical retardants, and temperature-regulating. Our sleep sacks come from Disana, Reiff, and Engel — all GOTS or IVN BEST certified. Always follow current safe-sleep guidelines from your pediatrician and organizations like the AAP, which generally recommend that infants sleep on a firm surface without loose bedding. Wearable sleep sacks are designed specifically to provide warmth without loose blankets in the crib.

When should my baby transition from sleep sack to pajamas?

Most children transition from wearable sleep sacks to traditional pajamas between 12 and 24 months, depending on individual sleep patterns, climbing ability, and pediatric guidance. The AAP recommends continuing sleep-sack use until at least 12 months. Some children continue wearing sleep sacks longer because they help with sleep temperature regulation; others transition to pajamas earlier once they start climbing out of the sleep sack or the crib. Follow your pediatrician's recommendations for your specific child.

Can my baby wear a wool base layer under a sleep sack?

Yes — this is a common combination for cold rooms. A thin merino or wool-silk base-layer bodysuit or romper from Engel layered under a sleep sack adds warmth without the bulk of heavier sleepwear, and both layers help regulate temperature. For typical room temperatures around 68-72°F, a single-layer sleep sack appropriate for the temperature is usually sufficient; for colder rooms, the base-layer-under-sleep-sack combination helps maintain a comfortable sleep temperature.

How often should I wash wool sleepwear?

Less often than cotton sleepwear — wool is naturally odor-resistant and only needs washing every 3 to 5 wears for most children. Airing the garment out between uses handles most situations. Wash when visibly soiled. Hand-wash wool in cool water with a wool-safe (enzyme-free) detergent and lay flat to dry. Cotton pajamas can be machine-washed normally and typically need washing more often as they don't have wool's natural odor resistance. See our complete wool care guide →

Can I return wool or cotton sleepwear?

Yes. Sleepwear can be returned within our standard return window as long as items are unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with tags attached. For best fit, we recommend measuring your child before ordering and checking each brand's size chart on the individual product page. See our returns page for full details →
