Description

Engel · Organic Merino Wool Fleece Wearable Blanket

A pouch-style wool sleep bag for newborns who don't want to be swaddled

100% organic merino wool fleece, GOTS certified, made in Germany. A soft stretchy waistband holds the pouch securely under baby's armpits — no risk of fabric riding up over the face, no constrictive swaddle, no need to fight a baby who wants their arms free. Fits newborns through approximately 4-6 months.

Heritage German merino wool, made the same way since 1930

Engel Natur is a family-run German manufacturer specializing in organic merino wool baby and children's clothing. The wool itself comes from certified organic, mulesing-free sheep farming in Argentina; the knitting, finishing, and sewing all happen in Pfullingen, southern Germany or partner workshops within about 50 kilometers. Roughly 95% of Engel's range is GOTS or IVN BEST certified — two of the world's strictest standards for organic textiles, covering everything from animal welfare to dye chemistry to fair wages.

Not a traditional sleep sack — a wearable pouch that keeps newborns cozy without swaddling

Many newborns hate being swaddled. Their arms are pinned, they squirm, they cry. But the same babies can also struggle with traditional sleep sacks, which are designed for older infants who can keep a long bag positioned. This Engel pouch sits somewhere in between: a wool fleece pouch for the lower body, with a wide stretchy waistband that pulls up and unfolds to cover the belly, lower back, and chest up to the armpits. The arms stay free. The waistband holds it in place so it can't scoot up over the face.

Common use cases
As a wearable receiving blanket for the first weeks home, for stroller naps and lounging in cool rooms, for skin-to-skin transitions, and for parents who babywear and want a layer that keeps baby's legs warm without bulk. Some parents also use it under a Nanit or similar wearable breathing monitor band — the waistband sits beneath the monitor without interfering.

Wool fleece — knitted wool brushed to a soft pile

Wool fleece is exactly what it sounds like: knitted merino wool that's been brushed on one side to create a soft, plush pile. It feels similar to synthetic fleece but is made entirely from wool, so it breathes naturally, regulates temperature, and stays warm even when damp. At Engel's typical fleece weight of approximately 280 g/m², it's substantial enough for cool rooms and outdoor use, light enough that babies don't overheat indoors.

Fiber

100% organic merino virgin wool fleece. Fine micron count typical of next-to-skin merino — soft against newborn skin, not the coarse wool of older generations.

Weight

Approximately 280 g/m². Substantial wool fleece — warmer than fine-knit merino at the same weight, but light enough to layer under or over clothing without bulk.

Construction

Pouch length 16 inches, stretchy waistband 6.5 inches. The waistband unfolds upward to cover belly, lower back, and chest up to the armpits.

Certifications

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified — covers organic fiber farming, processing chemistry, social criteria, and the full production chain.

Wool origin

Mulesing-free organic merino wool from Argentina, processed and knitted in Germany. kbT certification means controlled organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards.

Made in

Germany. Knitted, finished, and sewn at Engel's Pfullingen manufactory or partner workshops within 50 km, under fair wages and ILO-compliant working conditions.

Season and room temperature guidance

This is a pouch-style wearable blanket rather than a full-length TOG-rated sleep sack, so think of it more as a warm wool layer than a single-purpose sleep garment. Wool fleece naturally regulates body temperature, which gives this pouch a wider comfortable range than synthetic alternatives.

Cool rooms & cooler weather

61-68°F / 16-20°C

Layer over a long-sleeve bodysuit or wool/silk base layer. Wool fleece's warmth-to-weight ratio is excellent — newborns stay cozy without overheating.
Mild rooms

68-72°F / 20-22°C

Layer over a short-sleeve bodysuit. The wool fleece breathes, so baby won't overheat the way they might in a synthetic pouch at the same temperature.
Outdoor stroller naps

In cool fall, winter, early spring

Add a wool overall or knit blanket on top for sub-50°F outings. The wool fleece pouch retains warmth even with some breeze or dampness.
Safe sleep note
Follow AAP and pediatrician guidance on safe sleep at all temperatures. Dress baby in a single layer beneath the pouch, ensure the room temperature is appropriate, and check that baby feels comfortable (not hot or clammy) at the back of the neck.

Four reasons this wins over synthetic sleep sacks

Temperature-regulating, not just warm

Merino wool fleece actively balances body temperature — keeps newborns cozy in cool rooms without overheating in warm ones. This is fundamentally different from synthetic polyester pouches, which only insulate.

Stays warm even when damp

Wool absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet, and it retains warmth even damp. Real-world translation: spit-up, drool, and minor diaper leaks don't immediately leave baby cold.

Won't scoot up over the face

The stretchy waistband holds the pouch securely under the armpits. Many parents report this as the single biggest reason they prefer it to longer sleep sacks — no late-night repositioning.

Free from harmful chemicals

No AZO dyes, no heavy metals, no flame retardants — GOTS prohibits them. Reactive dyes with high colorfastness, all chemistry biodegradable. Suitable for babies with eczema or sensitive skin.

One size fits newborns through approximately 4-6 months

This pouch is sold in one size designed to fit infants from birth through roughly 4-6 months, depending on baby's length. Once your baby outgrows the pouch length or starts kicking out of it, transition to a full-length wool fleece sleep sack — Engel and Reiff both make excellent next-step options.

Measurement Dimension
Pouch length (from waistband to closed bottom) 16 inches / 40 cm
Stretchy waistband (height when folded) 6.5 inches / 16.5 cm
Recommended age range Newborn through 4-6 months
Gift buyers
This is a popular baby shower gift specifically because it works from day one — newborns can use it in the hospital and during the early weeks home when full-length sleep sacks are still too big.

Who this works for, and what to know going in

Works well for

Newborns who resist swaddling, babies with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, parents who want a natural fiber alternative to polyester sleep sacks, families with cool homes or unheated nurseries, and gift buyers shopping for a quality piece that the parents will actually use. Especially good for babies born in fall or winter.

What to consider

This is a short pouch, not a full-length sleep sack — baby's arms stay free and the bag covers only the lower body and torso. Once your baby starts pushing down or kicking the pouch off (typically around 4-6 months), you'll need to transition to a different style. This is a feature, not a flaw: the pouch is designed for the newborn stage specifically.

Care commitment

Wool fleece is hand wash only, cold water, wool wash detergent, lay flat to dry. Done correctly, it's a simple routine; done wrong (hot water or tumble dryer), wool fleece will felt and shrink. The upside: wool is naturally odor-resistant and rarely needs frequent washing.

Wool fleece care, briefly

Hand wash only Cold water Wool wash detergent Do not rub or wring Lay flat to dry No tumble drying

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan, Sonett, or Unicorn Fibre Wash all work well). Submerge gently and let the detergent do the work — don't rub or scrub. Rinse in water of the same temperature; sudden temperature changes are the main cause of wool felting. Press water out gently against a clean towel; never wring. Roll the pouch in a towel to absorb excess water, then lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat. Engel notes that wool naturally regenerates in fresh air — airing between uses is often enough, and frequent washing is neither necessary nor recommended.

Questions parents ask about this pouch

Is this the same as a sleep sack?

Not exactly. A traditional sleep sack is a full-length bag that zips up the front and goes over baby's shoulders, sized for older infants. This is a pouch — the lower body sits inside the bag, and a stretchy waistband holds it under the armpits with arms free. It's designed for the newborn stage specifically, when full-length sleep sacks are often too big.

What's the TOG rating?

Engel doesn't publish a formal TOG rating for this pouch since it's not a full-length sleep sack. As a general reference point, the wool fleece weight (approximately 280 g/m²) places it in the warmer category — suitable for cool rooms in the 61-68°F range when paired with a long-sleeve layer. For a full-length sleep sack with a confirmed TOG rating, Reiff's wool fleece sleep sack (2.5 TOG) is a natural next-step option.

My newborn hates being swaddled — will they like this?

This is exactly the use case parents most often choose it for. Because the arms stay free, babies who fight swaddles tend to settle into this much more readily. The wool fleece itself is plush and quietly weighted, which mimics some of the calming pressure of swaddling without the restriction.

Is merino wool itchy for a newborn?

Engel's fine merino is in the same micron range used by premium next-to-skin merino base layers — meaningfully softer than the coarse wool most adults remember from childhood. Most babies, including those with sensitive skin or eczema, wear it comfortably. A very small percentage of children are still sensitive to wool; if your baby has reacted before, you can layer the pouch over a cotton or wool/silk bodysuit so there's no direct skin contact.

How long does it actually fit?

Most babies wear it from newborn through approximately 4-6 months. The exact upper limit depends on length and how actively your baby kicks — some babies outgrow it sooner, some stretch closer to 6 months. When your baby is consistently pushing it down or wriggling out, it's time to transition.

Can I machine wash it?

No. Engel specifies hand wash for this wool fleece pouch. Machine washing — even on a wool cycle — risks felting because of agitation and temperature inconsistency. Hand washing in cold water with wool wash is gentler and protects the fleece structure. It's a simple routine once yo

    It's Perfect!

Published by Jessica on Dec 10th 2022

This is exactly what we needed for our 7-week-old who hates swaddling! It's easy to put on, has a nice stretchy waistband, and regulates her temperature perfectly. She is never cold nor sweaty when we take her out of this sleeping bag. We even use our Nanit breathing band over the waistband as well and it works perfectly. Another thing I love about this is that it stays under the armpits, so there's no risk of it scooting up over her face as baby moves around the way other sleep sacks do. 10/10 would recommend!
