Description

Engel Wool · Kid's Merino Wool Base Layer · Sizes 2–15

Engel kid's merino wool & silk thermal base layer — 190 gsm of German-knit warmth for winter, ski days, and pajamas in one shirt.

Engel's long-sleeve children's merino wool base layer is knitted in Germany from 70% organic merino wool and 30% mulberry silk in a fine rib at 190 grams per square meter (gsm) — thin enough to disappear under a sweater, warm enough for cold mornings, and gentle enough for sensitive or eczema-prone skin. One of the most-recommended wool base layers for kids in natural-parenting circles.

Engel Natur — Germany's natural fiber specialist since 1927

Engel has been making natural-fiber underwear, base layers, and basics in Germany for nearly a century, and Engel wool/silk base layers are what the brand is best known for in Waldorf, babywearing, and natural-parenting communities. Every piece of Engel merino wool clothing is knitted, dyed, sewn, and finished in Germany with no chemical finishes, AZO-free dyes, and full IVN BEST and GOTS certification. The merino wool comes from controlled organic farms with strict animal welfare and mulesing-free shearing standards (kbT).

If you've heard parents on natural-living forums talk about "Engel wool" as the gold-standard first wool layer for a baby or sensitive child, this is the fabric they mean.

When to reach for this merino wool base layer

At 190 gsm, this is a true year-round merino wool base layer rather than a heavy winter weight. The wool keeps your child warm when temperatures drop, while the silk content and fine rib knit prevent the overheating you get with synthetic thermals. Most families use this Engel wool shirt three ways:

Wool base layer for cold weather
Under ski gear, snow suits, or wool sweaters
The thin profile sits flat under outerwear without bulk. Wool keeps insulating even when damp from sweat or snowmelt — one of the reasons merino wool base layers outperform cotton or synthetic thermals in winter.
Cool-weather everyday wear
School, nature kindergarten, outdoor play
Worn on its own in 50–65°F / 10–18°C. Light enough that an active child won't overheat, warm enough for shoulder seasons. A favorite long-sleeve merino top for school and nature programs.
Wool pajama top
Year-round sleepwear that breathes
Temperature-regulating fiber means one shirt works across seasons. Pair with the matching Engel merino wool leggings for a complete wool pajama set or footie-style sleepwear layer.

The fabric, in plain terms

70% Organic Merino Wool (kbT)
Fine 19.5-micron merino wool — well within the "next-to-skin soft" range. Naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant. Sourced from controlled organic (kbT) farms; mulesing-free.
30% Mulberry Silk
The silk softens the hand of the fabric and adds a subtle lustre. It's the reason this wool/silk blend is the most-recommended first wool layer for babies, eczema-prone children, and adults who've reacted to coarser wool.
190 gsm fine rib knit
Grams per square meter (gsm) measures fabric weight. At 190 gsm, this sits in the lightweight base-layer range — comparable to a thin merino wool long-sleeve t-shirt. Thick enough to insulate, thin enough to layer cleanly under a sweater or coat.
IVN BEST + GOTS Certified
Two of the strictest organic textile certifications in the world, covering organic fiber farming, dye safety, factory wastewater, and worker welfare. No chemical finishes, no AZO dyes, nickel-free.
Knitted & sewn in Germany
Engel runs its own knitting and finishing in Germany rather than outsourcing — one of the reasons the fabric quality of these German wool base layers is consistent year after year.
Stretchy fit, flat seams
The fine rib gives the wool thermo shirt natural stretch in every direction. Crew neck, long sleeves, snug-but-not-tight body cut. Gender-neutral styling for boys and girls.

What this merino wool fabric actually does

Temperature-regulating, not just warm
Merino wool moves moisture vapor away from the skin and traps a layer of warm air. Children stay warm when it's cold and don't overheat when they're running around — the opposite of synthetic thermals that get clammy.
Insulates even when damp
Unlike cotton, wool retains roughly 80% of its insulating ability when wet. After a snowy recess or a sweaty ski lift, this merino wool base layer keeps doing its job until your child is back inside.
Naturally odor- and bacteria-resistant
Merino's structure naturally resists the bacteria that cause odor — one of the reasons it doesn't need frequent washing. Air it out between wears and a single wool undershirt covers most of a winter week.
Soft enough for sensitive skin
The silk content combined with 19.5-micron merino makes this one of the gentlest wool fabrics on the market. Many parents of eczema-prone children use Engel wool/silk as their first wool trial.
Outlasts a season — and a sibling
German-knit wool/silk doesn't pill or thin out the way commodity merino does. With proper care, these shirts pass cleanly from older to younger sibling and hold their shape for years.
Chemical-free against the skin
No formaldehyde finishes, no anti-itch coatings, no AZO dyes, no flame retardants. IVN BEST is the strictest natural-textile standard in Europe — what you see is exactly what's against your child's skin.

Engel size chart — sizes 2 through 15/16

European sizing runs slightly slim, especially in the chest and sleeve. If your child is tall for their age, at the top end of an age range, or has a sturdy build, size up one step. Some longtime Engel customers consistently order one size larger than the age chart suggests.

EU Size Child's Age Approx. Height
EU 92 2–3 years up to 92 cm / 36 in
EU 104 3–4 years up to 104 cm / 41 in
EU 116 5–6 years up to 116 cm / 46 in
EU 128 7–8 years up to 128 cm / 50 in
EU 140 9–10 years up to 140 cm / 55 in
EU 152 11–12 years up to 152 cm / 60 in
EU 164 13–14 years up to 164 cm / 65 in
EU 176 15–16 years up to 176 cm / 69 in
Sizing tip from real reviews
Customers who measured their child near the upper end of a size range have reported the fit feeling tight, especially in the largest sizes. If your child is between sizes, choose the larger one — this fabric stretches comfortably with a slightly looser fit, and the snug rib keeps it sitting close to the body anyway.

Who this shirt is right for — and a few honest notes

Excellent fit if…
…your child runs cold, has sensitive or eczema-prone skin, plays outdoors year-round, or you're moving away from synthetic thermals. Also a strong choice if you want one merino wool shirt that works as a base layer, casual top, and pajama top — and as a piece you can hand down.
A note on wool itch
Engel's 19.5-micron wool/silk is the softest wool fabric most parents will encounter, and the great majority of children — including many with sensitive skin — wear it without issue. That said, a small percentage of people remain sensitive to wool of any micron count. A few customer reviews note that one child found the fabric slightly itchy even when others in the same family did not. If your child has reacted to wool before, this blend is the gentlest place to start, but plan to test it first.
Care commitment
This is not a tumble-dry shirt. It needs a wool-specific detergent and air drying flat — fifteen seconds of attention rather than a complicated routine, but you do have to remember it. Hot water and the regular dryer will felt and shrink the fabric. Once you've washed wool a few times, it becomes second nature.
On the price
Engel sits at heritage German pricing because everything from the organic kbT wool to the in-house knitting in Germany costs more than commodity merino. The trade-off is a shirt that lasts through several children, doesn't pill, and replaces multiple synthetic base layers across a child's age range. Many families buy one shirt per child per year and find it sufficient.

How to wash wool/silk without ruining it

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool-specific detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying Air between wears

Wool and silk are self-cleaning fibers — most pieces only need washing every several wears. Air the shirt out overnight and surface odors disappear on their own. Spot-clean food or marks with cool water and a dab of wool wash.

When a full wash is needed: hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent like Eucalan, Sonett, or Disana wool wash, or use the wool/delicates cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring or twist. Lay flat on a clean towel, roll to absorb excess water, then unroll and reshape on a fresh towel. Air dry away from direct heat or sun.

What not to do

Hot water, agitation, and tumble drying are what felt and shrink wool — so avoid all three. Don't use regular laundry detergent (the enzymes break down wool fibers) and skip fabric softener (it coats the fibers and reduces breathability).

What parents ask before buying

Will my child find this Engel merino wool base layer itchy?
Most children do not. Engel's 19.5-micron merino combined with 30% mulberry silk produces one of the softest wool fabrics on the market — well within the "next-to-skin" range that pediatric and dermatology guidance considers comfortable for sensitive skin. A small minority of children remain sensitive to wool regardless of micron count, so if your child has reacted to wool before, plan to test the shirt for a short wear first. The wool/silk blend is the gentlest starting point for skeptics.
Is 190 gsm warm enough as a wool base layer for cold weather?
Yes, when worn as a base layer. 190 gsm is a true lightweight thermal — comparable to a thin merino long-sleeve. Worn under a wool sweater, fleece, or snowsuit it provides excellent insulation while staying breathable. For very cold conditions or children who run cold even when active, you may want to layer this under a heavier midweight piece. Worn alone, it's comfortable in the 50–65°F / 10–18°C range.
Can I machine wash this on the wool cycle?
Yes — most modern machines have a wool or delicates cycle that uses cold water and minimal agitation, which is safe for Engel wool/silk. Use a wool-specific detergent (no enzymes) and skip fabric softener. The single rule that matters: never tumble dry. Heat plus agitation is what felts wool. Lay flat to air dry.
My child is on the upper end of an age range — should I size up?
Yes. European sizing runs slim through the chest and sleeve, and several reviews note that the larger sizes especially can feel tight on tall or sturdy builds. If your child is at the top of an age range, has long arms, or is naturally lean and tall, size up one step. The rib knit has natural stretch, so a slightly larger size still sits close to the body without looking baggy.
How is this different from supermarket merino wool clothing?
Three differences. First, fiber: Engel uses certified organic merino (kbT) and mulberry silk, with no chemical finishes — most commodity merino is treated with anti-shrink chemicals like Hercosett that coat the fiber. Second, knit quality: Engel knits in Germany at 190 gsm in a fine rib that resists pilling and holds shape across many washes. Third, certifications: IVN BEST and GOTS cover the entire production chain — from farm to finished garment — which generic merino brands cannot match.
Can this be used as wool pajamas?
Yes — many families do. Wool's temperature regulation means the same shirt works on warm spring nights and cold winter ones, which is why Engel pieces are popular as year-round sleepwear. Pair with Engel's matching wool/silk leggings or long johns for a complete wool pajama set. Note: this product is not flame-retardant treated (which is a feature, not a flaw — the IVN BEST standard prohibits chemical treatments). Wool is naturally flame-resistant.
Where is the wool from and where is the shirt made?
Engel sources its merino from controlled organic farms (kbT certified) that follow strict animal welfare and mulesing-free standards. The wool is then knitted, dyed with AZO-free reactive dyes, and sewn into finished garments at Engel's facility in Germany. Every step is covered by IVN BEST and GOTS certification.

    Very good

Lovely as all Engel wool is. But it runs small. We got the largest size, 176/16yrs, for my 13 year old boy. He is 5'6", barely 100 lbs bean pole, and it was a tad too tight. It was also scratchier than the other Engel woolies we've purchased. Beautiful vibrant blue and yellow, though!
