Engel · Kids Merino Wool & Silk Base Layer Leggings

Extra-Fine Merino Wool & Silk Thermal Leggings for Kids

A featherweight 190 g/m² base layer in 70% organic merino wool and 30% mulberry silk — soft enough for sensitive skin, warm enough for ski days, and breathable enough to wear year-round. Made in Germany by Engel, IVN BEST and GOTS certified.

Engel — Germany’s heritage natural fiber maker since 1927

Engel has been knitting organic wool, silk, and cotton garments in Schorndorf, Germany, for nearly a century. They’re one of the most respected names in European natural fiber clothing, trusted by Waldorf families, midwives, and parents who want chemical-free clothing against their child’s skin.

Every Engel piece is GOTS and IVN BEST certified — the strictest organic textile standards in the world. The wool is kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung), meaning it comes from certified organic farms with strict animal welfare requirements: no mulesing, no synthetic pesticides on pastures, and no harmful treatments on the fiber. Dyes are free from heavy metals and AZO compounds.

A true year-round base layer

These thermal leggings are the most versatile wool/silk piece in the Engel lineup. Wool naturally regulates body temperature — warming when it’s cold, releasing heat when it isn’t — which is why the same pair works for January skiing and September camping.

Winter
Base layer under snow pants

Worn against the skin under jeans, snow pants, or school uniforms. Adds warmth without bulk for skiing, sledding, hiking, or cold-classroom days.

Spring & Fall
Standalone leggings

Soft enough to wear on their own under a tunic or dress in transitional weather. Breathable enough that kids don’t overheat as the day warms up.

Year-Round
Pajama bottoms

Many parents use these as wool sleep pants. The temperature-regulating wool/silk blend helps kids who run hot or kick off blankets stay comfortable all night.

Best fit by use case

For active kids skiing, hiking, or playing outdoors in cold weather: layer under fleece-lined pants or snow pants. For everyday winter wear: layer under jeans, leggings, or school pants. For sleep: wear on their own with a wool or cotton pajama top.

70% organic merino wool, 30% mulberry silk — 190 g/m² fine rib knit

70% Organic Merino Wool

Extra-fine merino at approximately 19.5 microns — the softness range used for next-to-skin baby and children’s clothing. Naturally temperature-regulating, breathable, odor-resistant, and moisture-wicking. Sourced from kbT-certified organic farms.

30% Mulberry Silk

Real mulberry silk softens the hand of the fabric and adds a subtle sheen and stretch. Silk is the gentlest fiber for sensitive skin and makes this the ideal first wool layer for children who haven’t worn wool before.

190 g/m² Fine Rib Knit

A lightweight mid-weight fabric that provides real warmth without bulk. The fine rib pattern stretches with movement and lies flat under other clothing — no bunching or visible seams under jeans.

Made in Germany

Knit, sewn, and finished in Germany. GOTS and IVN BEST certified end-to-end — covering the wool farming, processing, dyeing, and final garment construction. No harmful chemicals, AZO dyes, or heavy metals.

Key features

Temperature-regulating

Merino wool actively responds to body temperature — insulating in cold weather and releasing heat when active. Kids stay warm without overheating during play.

Soft on sensitive skin

The 19.5-micron merino combined with 30% silk is genuinely soft — not the scratchy wool of decades past. Suitable for most children with eczema or sensory sensitivities.

Moisture-wicking

Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp. Sweat moves away from the skin, keeping kids dry under snow gear or during high-effort play.

Naturally odor-resistant

Wool resists bacteria growth, so these leggings stay fresh through multiple wears. Air them out between uses — full washing is rarely needed weekly.

GOTS & IVN BEST certified

Two of the strictest organic textile certifications in the world. No pesticides on pastures, no harmful dyes, no chemical finishes — verified at every stage.

Built to be passed down

Engel construction is durable enough that these leggings often pass between siblings. With proper wool care, they hold shape and softness for years.

European sizing by height — 2 to 16 years

Engel uses standard European children’s sizing based on the child’s height in centimeters. Each size corresponds to an approximate age range. European sizing runs slightly slim — if your child is at the upper end of an age range or tall for their age, size up.

EU Size Approx. Age Child Height
EU 92 2–2.5 years Up to 92 cm / 36 in
EU 104 3–4 years Up to 104 cm / 41 in
EU 116 5–6 years Up to 116 cm / 46 in
EU 128 7–8 years Up to 128 cm / 50 in
EU 140 9–10 years Up to 140 cm / 55 in
EU 152 11–12 years Up to 152 cm / 60 in
EU 164 13–14 years Up to 164 cm / 65 in
EU 176 15–16 years Up to 176 cm / 69 in
How to choose

Measure your child’s height and choose the size at or just above that measurement. Wool/silk has a small amount of natural stretch, but for older kids who are growing fast or for use as pajama bottoms (where you want a relaxed fit), sizing up gives you longer wear.

What you should know before ordering

Who these work especially well for

Kids in cold-climate winters who need a real base layer. Children with eczema or sensitive skin (the silk content makes this the gentlest wool option Engel offers). Kids who run hot at night and kick off blankets — the wool/silk blend regulates body heat better than synthetic pajamas. Families building a chemical-free wardrobe.

A note on wool itch

Fine merino at 19.5 microns is genuinely soft — meaningfully different from coarse traditional wool. The 30% silk content adds another layer of softness. Most children, including many with sensory sensitivities, find these leggings comfortable. That said, a small percentage of people are still sensitive to any wool. If your child has reacted to wool before, this wool/silk blend is the gentlest place to start.

Care commitment is real but simple

These are not throw-in-the-machine-with-everything leggings. Wool requires hand washing or a wool cycle in cold water, and they must be laid flat to dry. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will felt and shrink wool — that’s a real risk worth knowing. Once you have a wool wash routine, it takes minutes; until then, plan for that learning curve.

Investment-level price, multi-year garment

Engel pieces sit at a heritage European price point. The value comes from durability (commonly passed between siblings), certifications you can verify, and the genuine performance of the fiber. If you’re comparing to fast-fashion synthetic base layers, the price gap is real — but you’re buying a different category of garment.

How to wash wool/silk leggings without ruining them

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool-specific detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener

Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing — airing between wears is often enough to keep these leggings fresh. When a full wash is needed, use cool water with a wool-specific detergent like Eucalan or Sonett wool wash (regular detergents contain enzymes that damage wool fibers). Hand wash, or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine if it maintains consistent cold water temperature.

Press water out gently — never wring or twist. Lay flat on a clean towel, roll the towel to absorb extra moisture, then unroll and lay flat to air dry away from direct heat. With this routine, wool/silk leggings hold shape and softness for years and are commonly passed between siblings.

Important: what damages wool

Hot water, agitation, and tumble drying cause wool to felt and shrink — permanently. If you accidentally machine wash on a regular cycle, the leggings may shrink one to two sizes. The wool care routine above takes about five minutes once it’s habit.

Answers to what parents ask most

Will these leggings be itchy on my child?
Engel uses extra-fine merino at approximately 19.5 microns — the same softness range used in premium adult next-to-skin merino base layers. Combined with 30% mulberry silk, the fabric is genuinely soft. Most children, including those with eczema or sensory sensitivities, find these leggings comfortable. If your child has reacted to wool before, this wool/silk blend is the gentlest option to try.
What weight or GSM is the fabric?
The fabric weighs approximately 190 g/m² — a true mid-weight base layer. It’s heavy enough to provide real warmth in cold weather and light enough to wear comfortably under jeans or pants without bulk. The fine rib knit lies flat against the skin and stretches with movement.
Can my child wear these on their own, or only as a base layer?
Both. They’re designed as a thermal base layer for cold weather, but the fabric is soft and finished enough to wear as standalone leggings under tunics or dresses, or as wool pajama bottoms. Many parents use the same pair multiple ways through the year.
What size should I order?
Order based on your child’s height in centimeters using the size chart above. European sizing runs slightly slim, so if your child is tall for their age or near the top of an age range, size up. For older fast-growing kids or for use as relaxed-fit pajamas, sizing up extends usable wear time.
How do I wash these without shrinking them?
Hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett), or use the wool/delicate cycle on cold. Press water out gently, lay flat on a towel to remove excess moisture, then lay flat to air dry. Never use hot water, regular detergent, or a tumble dryer — these will felt and shrink wool permanently.
How often do these need to be washed?
Far less often than cotton. Wool is naturally odor-resistant and bacteria-resistant — airing the leggings between wears is usually enough to keep them fresh. Most parents wash them once a week or less during regular wear, more often if visibly soiled.
What certifications does Engel carry, and what do they mean?
Engel is certified by both GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and IVN BEST — two of the strictest organic textile certifications in the world. These cover the entire production chain: organic wool farming with certified animal welfare standards (kbT), no harmful chemicals or AZO dyes, no heavy metals, and fair labor practices. The wool is kbT-certified organic, meaning it comes from farms that prohibit pesticides on pastures and require humane animal husbandry.
Where are these leggings made?
Designed, knit, sewn, and finished in Germany by Engel, who has been making organic natural fiber clothing since 1927. The merino wool fiber is sourced from certified organic farms; final garment production is entirely German.

    Soft

Published by Lindsey on Feb 22nd 2026

My son has adhd and sensory processing issues when it comes to fabrics and textures. I was worried about merino wool being an issue for him as he prefers to wear everything dri-fit material, fleece or a very smooth and soft cotton. At first he complained when he put this base layer on, but after wearing it for a few minutes, he said that it’s very cozy. Bought as a base layer set for skiing as he runs hot and sweats easily. For the first time when wearing this base layer set, I took off his ski helmet to a dry head. It definitely helped to regulate his temperature and wick sweat. Very great product. Not surprising though as I loved the sleep sacks from Ecoable when my son used them.

    Arrived with a hole

Published by Disappointed on Feb 22nd 2026

The inner seam of the leggings had a hole in it due to a manufacturing defect when I opened the package. I paid more than $125 for the leggings and shirt and shipping. I was offered only a 15% discount to keep the item as is, or free return shipping label and full refund; Customer Service said I could not exchange them. I was really disappointed as I paid a lot and wanted to have these for a long time.
