Description

Disana · Kids' Merino Wool Pullover

A lightweight merino wool sweater that layers all year

Disana's classic kids' pullover in 100% GOTS-certified organic merino wool, knit in Germany at a versatile 300 g/m² weight. Soft enough to wear on its own indoors, warm enough to layer under a coat in winter — a true year-round wardrobe staple for boys and girls.

Disana — three decades of German organic knitwear

Disana is a family-run German maker that has been crafting natural-fiber baby and children's clothing for more than thirty years. Every piece is manufactured in Germany — wool is sourced from certified organic flocks in Argentina, spun in Europe, then knit and finished at Disana's own facility. As a member of the International Association of Natural Textile Industry (IVN), Disana follows some of the strictest standards in the world for fiber sourcing, processing, and labor practices.

If you've come across Disana through Waldorf parenting circles, European baby communities, or natural-fiber friends, this pullover is one of their core year-round pieces — sized to grow with your child from toddler through pre-teen.

Light enough for spring, warm enough for winter layering

This is Disana's lighter-weight knit pullover — finer and more breathable than their heavier sweaters. That makes it one of the most versatile pieces in the line. Wear it on its own as a warm long-sleeve top during cool mornings, mild fall afternoons, and spring transitional weather. In winter, layer it over a merino or wool/silk base layer and under a boiled wool walker or coat for genuine cold-weather warmth without bulk.

A practical layering note
Merino is naturally temperature-regulating, so the same pullover that keeps a child warm at 50°F outdoors won't overheat them indoors at room temperature. This is part of why parents end up reaching for it nearly every day during the school year.

100% organic merino wool, knit at 300 g/m²

Fiber
100% pure new merino wool from kbT-certified organic flocks. Fine micron count for next-to-skin softness, dyed with low-impact GOTS-approved dyes.
Knit weight
Approximately 300 g/m² — a mid-light knit. Substantial enough to wear as outerwear indoors, fine enough to layer under a jacket without bulk.
Construction
Classic crew neck pullover with tubular-knit cuffs on sleeves and hem in a contrasting color. Flat seams to prevent rubbing on sensitive skin.
Origin
Wool sourced in Argentina, spun in Europe, knit and finished by Disana in Germany. GOTS and IVN Best certified.

What this fiber actually does

Temperature-regulating
Merino's crimped fibers trap air in pockets that adjust to body temperature. Your child stays warm in the cold and won't overheat indoors or during active play.
Breathable & moisture-wicking
Merino can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, then release it back into the air. Skin stays dry and comfortable.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool fibers resist bacteria growth, so the sweater stays fresh through many wearings. Most parents air rather than wash between uses.
GOTS & IVN Best certified
Two of the strictest organic textile certifications. GOTS covers the entire chain from farm to finished garment; IVN Best is even stricter on chemical and labor standards.

What GOTS, IVN Best, and kbT actually mean

GOTS
Global Organic Textile Standard — the leading worldwide standard for organic textiles, covering both organic fiber farming and the entire processing chain including spinning, dyeing, and finishing.
IVN Best
An even stricter European standard than GOTS, allowing fewer chemical inputs and requiring higher social standards across the supply chain.
kbT
Kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung — German for controlled organic animal husbandry. The wool comes from certified organic flocks with strict animal welfare standards: no mulesing, no harsh chemicals, ethical living conditions.

By height first, then age

Disana sizes by child height in centimeters, with age ranges as a rough guide. If your child is tall for their age or near the upper end of a range, size up. European sizing runs slightly slim through the body.

EU Size Age (approx) Child height Back length Sleeve length
86-92 1-2 years 34-36 in (86-92 cm) 15 in (39 cm) 11 in (28 cm)
98-104 3-4 years 38-41 in (98-104 cm) 17 in (43 cm) 13.5 in (34 cm)
110-116 5-6 years 43-45 in (110-116 cm) 19 in (48-49 cm) 15-16 in (38-41 cm)
122-128 7-8 years 48-50 in (122-128 cm) 21 in (54 cm) 16.5-18 in (42-46 cm)
134-140 9-10 years 52-55 in (134-140 cm) 22.5-23 in (57-58 cm) 18.5-20 in (47-51 cm)
Pre-2023 labels

If you receive a piece with an older Disana label, the age range printed on the tag may not match what's shown above. The garment dimensions themselves are unchanged — Disana updated their age recommendations in 2023, but the cm/inch measurements have stayed the same. Trust the height range, not the printed age.

Who this works well for — and where to think twice

Excellent for
Children who run cold or sit still in school, families looking to build a natural-fiber wardrobe, parents who want a single sweater that handles fall through spring, kids with sensitive skin or eczema who haven't reacted to wool before, and households who pass clothing between siblings — Disana knits last for years.
Worth knowing
This is fine merino, not coarse wool, but a small percentage of children are still sensitive to wool against bare skin. If your child has reacted to wool before, layer this over a cotton or wool/silk base. The knit has natural give but isn't stretchy — go up a size if you're between heights.
Care commitment
Hand washing in cold water with wool wash, laid flat to dry. If you wash hot, agitate, or tumble dry, the wool will felt and shrink — there's no recovery. Once the routine is learned, it's simple, and merino's odor resistance means it needs washing far less often than cotton.

How to wash organic merino without ruining it

Hand wash in cold water Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener Iron on low if needed

Wool is naturally self-cleaning — its fibers resist dirt and odor, so most of the time airing the sweater out between wears is all it needs. When a full wash is required, hand wash in cool to lukewarm water (no hotter than 25°C / 77°F) with a wool-specific detergent like Eucalan or Sonett wool wash. Gently move the sweater through the water for a minute or two — don't rub, wring, or twist. Rinse with water at the same temperature.

Press water out by rolling the sweater in a clean towel. Reshape and lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight or heat. Stored properly, a Disana pullover can pass through multiple children with minimal wear — the value compounds over time.

FAQ

Is this merino wool itchy?
Disana uses fine merino — meaningfully softer than coarse traditional wool. Most children find it comfortable directly against skin, though a small percentage of people are still sensitive to wool. If your child has reacted to wool in the past, layer this pullover over a cotton or wool/silk shirt and it works as a warm second layer without skin contact.
What weight is this sweater — and what season is it for?
Approximately 300 g/m², which is mid-light by wool sweater standards. That makes it a true three-season piece: warm enough on its own for fall, spring, and cool indoor days, and a great mid-layer under a coat in winter. Heavier Disana sweaters and boiled-wool jackets are better picks for the coldest weeks of winter outdoors.
How does Disana sizing run? Should I size up?
Size by your child's actual height in cm, not by age. European sizing runs slightly slim through the body. If your child is tall for their age, on the upper end of a height range, or you want a season or two of growth room, size up. The knit has some natural give but isn't a stretchy fabric.
Why is the age range on the label different from your size chart?
Disana updated their published age recommendations in 2023. Pre-2023 garments still in circulation may have older age guidance on the tag, but the actual garment dimensions (height in cm, back length, sleeve length) have not changed. The size chart on this page reflects the current 2023+ recommendations and is accurate for fit.
Can I machine wash this?
We recommend hand washing only. Disana wool is natural and untreated, so it has not been chemically processed to be machine-safe. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will cause the wool fibers to felt and shrink permanently. Hand washing in cool water with wool wash takes only a few minutes and keeps the sweater in shape for years.
How often does merino wool actually need to be washed?
Far less often than cotton. Wool fibers naturally resist dirt and bacteria, and they release odors when aired out. For most kids, a Disana pullover only needs washing every few weeks during regular wear — airing it overnight is usually enough between wears. Spot clean small spills with a damp cloth.
Where is this made and where does the wool come from?
The wool is sourced from certified organic flocks in Argentina, spun in Europe, then knit and finished by Disana in Germany. The entire chain is GOTS and IVN Best certified, with kbT-certified animal welfare standards on the farms.
