Disana Organic Wool & Cotton Clothing — GOTS Certified, Family-Run Since 1969

Disana was founded in 1969 in the Lahr region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany — making it one of the oldest organic textile companies in the world. Long before GOTS existed as a standard, Disana was building a philosophy around natural fibers, ecological production, and clothing that was safe for children's developing bodies. Today, over 55 years later, Disana remains a family-run company and one of the first brands to carry GOTS certification when the standard was established.

Disana sources merino wool from certified-organic farms where animal welfare and land conservation are central to the farming practice. Every garment is designed and produced entirely in Germany, with no outsourcing at any stage. Disana uses natural dyes or undyed yarn wherever possible, and every piece leaves their facility free from chlorine bleaches, synthetic softeners, fire retardants, and formaldehyde finishes.

Disana is best known for two fabric types: fine knitted merino wool — soft, stretchy, and breathable for everyday baby and toddler wear — and boiled wool, a felted merino that is denser, wind-resistant, and structured for outerwear and sleep. Disana also makes organic cotton cloth diapers and wool diaper covers, making them the only brand in our collection that spans both natural diapering and clothing.

Disana

Knitted wool vs. boiled wool — which Disana is right for you?

Disana's collection divides into two fabric types with distinctly different properties. Both are 100% GOTS-certified organic merino wool, made in Germany — but they behave very differently and suit different purposes.

Knitted Merino Wool

Soft, stretchy, and breathable. The right choice for direct skin contact, everyday layering, and newborn through toddler wear. Used in baby blankets, cardigans, pants, bodysuits, leggings, and the wool diaper cover. Sizes up easily and drapes naturally against the body.

Boiled Wool

Felted and dense — wind-resistant, structured, and significantly warmer than knitted wool. Does not stretch the same way, so sizing up for outerwear is wise. Used in the sleep sack, mittens, winter hat, kids' jacket, girls' dress and skirt, and the large blanket throw.

What to buy first

For newborns & babies (0–24 months)

Start with the knitted merino receiving blanket — breathable enough for newborns, versatile as a swaddle, stroller cover, or play mat. The knitted cardigan and suspender pants are classic layette pieces for the first year. For winter, the boiled wool snowsuit romper with hood is a standout: wind-resistant, genuinely warm, and structured enough to go directly over a base layer without bulking up.

For sleep

The Disana boiled wool Schlafsack (sleep sack) is approximately 1.7–1.8 TOG, making it well suited for room temperatures of 16–20°C (61–68°F). It works as a mid-weight sleep option for fall and winter, particularly for babies who run warm or sleep in rooms with consistent overnight temperatures. The knitted overall also doubles as a sleep romper for younger babies.

For toddlers & kids (1–8 years)

The knitted leggings are an excellent base layer under school clothes for everyday wear. For cold-weather days, the boiled wool kids' jacket with hood is durable, wind-resistant outerwear that holds up through seasons of outdoor play. The boiled wool mittens and winter hat complete a full cold-weather kit. For girls, the boiled wool dress and pull-on skirt offer everyday warmth in a comfortable, natural silhouette.

For cloth diapering families

Disana's organic cotton fitted diaper and matching booster pads form a traditional natural diapering system. The tie-on fitted diaper is made from 100% brushed organic cotton — highly absorbent and designed for use with a wool cover. Pair it with Disana's double-knit merino wool diaper cover, lanolized before first use, for a fully breathable, plastic-free diapering system. It is the only complete cotton-and-wool diapering set we carry.

How Disana sizing works

Disana baby and kids clothing uses European height-based sizing in centimeters. A few things to keep in mind when ordering.

Knitted wool — size to height

Knitted pieces have natural stretch, so sizing to your child's current height works well. If your child is between sizes, knitted items can go up or down depending on how much growing room you want.

Boiled wool — size up

Boiled wool has very little give. For outerwear like the jacket, mittens, and winter hat, size up to allow for layering underneath and room to grow. The kids' jacket in particular runs fitted — allow an extra size for a base layer beneath.

Full size charts with body measurements are available on each individual product page.

Common questions about Disana wool

What is the difference between Disana knitted wool and boiled wool?

Knitted wool is soft, stretchy, and breathable — best for next-to-skin layers, baby blankets, and everyday wear. It sizes to height and has natural give. Boiled wool is felted merino — denser, wind-resistant, and significantly warmer. It has very little stretch and is best for outerwear, sleep sacks, mittens, and structured pieces like the kids' jacket and girls' dress. Disana uses both throughout their collection, often pairing a knitted inner layer with a boiled wool outer layer.

How long has Disana been making organic clothing?

Disana was founded in 1969 in the Lahr region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany — making it one of the oldest organic textile companies in the world. They were among the very first brands to achieve GOTS certification when the standard was established, and they have produced certified organic clothing continuously for over 55 years. The company remains family-run to this day.

Can I use the Disana wool cover as a cloth diaper cover?

Yes. Disana's double-knit merino wool diaper cover is specifically designed for use over cloth diapers. Wool becomes naturally water-resistant when lanolized — lanolin bonds to the wool fibers and creates a breathable barrier that repels moisture while allowing air circulation. The Disana wool cover should be lanolized before first use and re-lanolized every few weeks, or when it begins to feel damp after use rather than staying dry on the outside. See our lanolizing guide →

What TOG rating is the Disana boiled wool sleep sack?

The Disana boiled wool Schlafsack is approximately 1.7–1.8 TOG, making it suitable for room temperatures of 16–20°C (61–68°F). It works well for cool bedrooms in fall and winter, particularly for babies who run warm or sleep in rooms with consistent overnight temperatures. For colder rooms below 16°C, a warmer sleep sack or additional base layer underneath would be appropriate.

Where is Disana clothing made?

Disana garments are designed and manufactured in the Lahr region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Wool is sourced from certified-organic farms and all processing, dyeing, and garment production takes place in Germany. Disana has never outsourced their production since the company was founded in 1969.

How do I size Disana clothing?

Disana uses European height-based sizing in centimeters for baby and kids items. Measure your child's height from heel to head and choose the size closest to that number. For knitted wool pieces, sizing to current height works well as they have natural stretch. For boiled wool outerwear — especially the kids' jacket and mittens — size up to allow room for layering underneath. Full size charts with body measurements are on each product page. How does Disana compare to Engel and Reiff?

All three are German organic wool brands with GOTS certification, but each specializes differently. Disana is the oldest (founded 1969) and is the only brand that also makes organic cotton cloth diapers and wool diaper covers — making them a natural choice for cloth diapering families. Their knitted and boiled wool pieces focus primarily on babies and young children. Engel has the widest age range (newborn through adult) and holds IVN BEST certification in addition to GOTS; their wool-silk blend is their signature. Reiff specializes in 100% wool fleece, particularly baby sleep sacks, and also offers a women's clothing line in fine merino crepe.
