Description

Fitted Cloth Diaper · Made by Disana · 100% Organic Cotton

A tie-on cloth diaper with zero synthetic materials

A stretchy knitted organic cotton diaper from Disana, made in Germany. Fastens with soft cotton ties — no snaps, no elastic, no hook-and-loop, no plastic anywhere. Fits from newborn through potty training in one size.

Fitted diaper only — needs a waterproof cover
This diaper absorbs but has no waterproof layer. For leak-proof performance it must be paired with a cover — natural fiber with the Disana Wool Diaper Cover, or PUL with the EcoAble Heavy Duty Diaper Cover.

The simplest cloth diaper, made properly

A tie-on fitted diaper is one of the oldest forms of cloth diapering — older than modern snap or hook-and-loop designs. Disana has been producing this specific diaper in Germany since the early 1970s. The design is simple on purpose: a long rectangle of stretchy knitted organic cotton that wraps around your baby and fastens with a cotton tie at the waist. No fasteners, no fiddly bits, no pins.

Why parents choose this specific diaper

This is the diaper for parents who want zero synthetic materials touching their baby. Most cloth diapers — even "organic" ones — still contain synthetic elastic, PUL laminate, or hook-and-loop tape. The Disana tie diaper contains none of those. Every thread, from the knit itself to the ties, is certified organic cotton. If building a fully synthetic-free cloth diaper system is important to you, this is one of very few products that genuinely meets that standard.

When this is the right choice

Parents building a fully natural-fiber system
If your goal is zero synthetic materials in contact with your baby, this diaper is one of the few that actually delivers. Pair with a wool cover for a 100% natural-fiber setup.
Newborns with sensitive skin
Because there are no elastics, the diaper doesn't leave red marks or pressure lines at the legs or waist. The stretchy knitted shell follows your baby's shape gently — a good fit for newborns and for babies who react to elastic.
Parents who want one diaper birth-to-potty
Truly one-size — no size ups, no second purchase. The same diaper adjusts from newborn through toddler by folding the top edge to control rise.
Traditional cloth diapering approaches
Flat-diaper enthusiasts, elimination communication families, and parents seeking a minimalist setup often prefer tie-on fitted diapers for their simplicity and the absence of fasteners.

Using the tie-on diaper, step by step

The technique for putting on a tie diaper is specific but straightforward. Here's the approach Disana recommends.

1
Wash before first use
Organic cotton contains natural oils that need to wash out before full absorbency develops. Wash several times before first use. Absorbency continues to improve over the first few wash cycles.
2
Lay the diaper flat with the ties at the top
Spread the knitted diaper on the changing surface, with the long ties at the top (waistband end). If adding a booster pad or prefold for extra absorbency, place it centered on the diaper now.
3
Adjust the rise for your baby's size
For a newborn or small baby, fold the top edge of the diaper down by several inches — this shortens the rise and makes the one-size design fit a smaller body. For a bigger baby or toddler, fold less or leave the top unfolded. This fold-at-top technique is how the diaper fits across the full diapering age range.
4
Lay baby on the diaper and fold up
Position your baby so their waist aligns with the top of the diaper. Bring the bottom up between the legs. Fold the two side edges inward at each leg to form a cuff — this helps contain leaks at the leg openings.
5
Cross the ties behind, bring forward, tie in a bow
Take the two ties, cross them behind your baby's back, bring them around to the front, and tie in a simple bow at the waist. The fit should be snug but not tight — the stretchy knit does the hugging, the tie just holds everything in place.
6
Pull a cover over the top
The tie diaper is absorbent but not waterproof — moisture will pass through without a cover. Pull your chosen cover (wool or PUL) over the tied diaper to complete the system.

Covers and boosters for a complete system

This diaper is the absorbent core — you'll pair it with a cover for waterproofing, and optionally with a booster for heavier wetting. Here are the natural-fiber options that pair cleanly with this diaper.

Disana Wool Diaper Cover
The natural-fiber counterpart. Wool is water-resistant when lanolized, breathable, and contains no synthetics — the ideal pairing for a fully natural cloth diaper system. See the Disana Wool Cover.
EcoAble Heavy Duty PUL Cover
If you prefer the convenience of machine washing and fast drying, a PUL cover is simpler. See the EcoAble Heavy Duty Diaper Cover.
Disana Brushed Cotton Booster Pads
Disana's own organic brushed cotton booster pads tuck inside this diaper for overnight or heavy-wetting use. Natural fiber, made to pair with the tie diaper. See the Disana Brushed Cotton Booster Pads.

What makes this diaper different

01
100% organic cotton — every single fiber
Most cloth diapers described as "organic" still contain elastic, PUL, hook-and-loop, or polyester thread. This one doesn't. The knit is organic cotton, the ties are organic cotton, the stitching is cotton. Fully GOTS-certified throughout.
02
Stretchy knit — no elastics needed
The knitted construction is naturally stretchy, which means the diaper hugs your baby's shape without requiring elastic at the legs or waist. No marks on the skin, no pressure lines, no tightness — particularly important for newborns.
03
Truly one-size, birth to potty training
The fold-at-top technique adjusts the rise to fit newborns all the way to potty-training toddlers. One purchase covers the full diapering range.
04
Made in Germany since the 1970s
Disana has been manufacturing this specific diaper design for over 50 years. The longevity reflects how well the design works — simple, durable, and easily passed between siblings when cared for properly.

What it's made from

100% Organic Cotton

Stretchy knit · GOTS certified · Made in Germany

Organic cotton means the cotton is grown without pesticides, insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers. Disana's cotton is GOTS-certified, which is the most comprehensive organic textile standard — it covers the farm, the processing, the dyeing stages, and the working conditions at each step.

Stretchy knit construction gives the diaper its elasticity without needing any synthetic elastic. The knit moves with your baby and returns to shape after each wash.

No synthetic materials anywhere. No elastic, no PUL, no hook-and-loop, no polyester thread. The ties are knitted organic cotton, the fabric is knitted organic cotton, the stitching is cotton. This is a rare property — most "organic" cloth diapers still contain synthetic fasteners or elastic.

One size, newborn through potty training

There are no size options to choose. The same diaper fits from newborn to potty-training toddler — you adjust by folding the top edge down to control the rise.

Stage How to Fit
Newborn (birth–3 months) Fold top edge down several inches to shorten rise; fold sides inward for a snug cuff at the legs
Baby (3–12 months) Fold top edge down 1–2 inches; adjust tie placement slightly lower on the waist
Toddler (12+ months) Leave top edge unfolded or fold minimally; tie at natural waist
Expect slight shrinkage after first washes
Organic cotton shrinks slightly after the first few washes — this is normal and built into the design. The diaper reaches its intended fit after pre-washing.

Is this the right diaper for you?

A straight look at what this diaper does well and what first-time users should know before buying.

Works well for
  • Parents intentionally seeking a diaper with zero synthetic materials — this is one of very few products that genuinely meets that standard
  • Newborns and babies with sensitive skin who react to elastic or synthetic fibers
  • Families wanting one diaper that lasts birth to potty training — a significant cost saver over snap-adjustable diapers that still have size limitations
  • Overnight use when paired with a booster pad or prefold for extra absorbency and a cover on top
  • Traditional cloth diapering approaches, elimination communication, or any system that values simplicity over synthetic convenience
Worth knowing
  • The diaper needs pre-washing several times before first use to reach full absorbency — organic cotton releases natural oils in early wash cycles
  • The diaper is intentionally fairly thin on its own. For overnight or heavy daytime wetting, Disana recommends a booster pad or prefold tucked inside for extra absorbency
  • Not waterproof — requires a cover for leak-proof use. This is the same as all fitted and flat-style diapers
  • The tying technique is different from snap or hook-and-loop diapers — there is a brief learning curve before it feels routine
For first-time cloth diaper parents
  • If you want the simplest possible starting point, the EcoAble Cloth Diaper Starter Kit includes a cover and three bamboo inserts as a complete ready-to-use system — easier routine, though it uses synthetic materials
  • If you're committed to a natural-fiber approach but want a diaper with snap fasteners instead of ties, the EcoAble Hemp Night Fitted Diaper uses a hemp-cotton construction with snaps

Washing your tie diapers

Wash before first use Machine washable Warm water Tumble dry low to medium No bleach No fabric softeners

Wash the diaper several times before first use to remove natural cotton oils and reach full absorbency. After that, machine wash in warm water with your regular detergent. Tumble dry on low or medium heat. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners — both degrade cotton fibers over time and reduce absorbency. When properly cared for, these diapers last long enough to be passed between children.

What parents ask most

Why does this diaper need pre-washing before first use?
Organic cotton contains natural oils that protect the cotton fibers during growing and processing. These oils need to wash out before the cotton can absorb properly. Wash the diaper several times before first use, and expect absorbency to continue improving over the first few wash cycles. This is a standard characteristic of organic cotton, not a defect.
Do I really need a cover?
Yes. This diaper absorbs moisture but is not waterproof — without a cover, moisture will gradually pass through the cotton onto clothing and bedding. A waterproof cover is an essential part of the system, not an optional add-on. The Disana Wool Cover is the natural-fiber match; a PUL cover is the simpler option.
How does one size really fit a newborn and a toddler?
The diaper is a long stretchy rectangle. For a small baby, you fold the top edge down several inches, which shortens the rise and brings the ties to the right position on a smaller body. As your baby grows, you fold less — eventually leaving the top unfolded for a toddler. This fold-at-top technique is how one design covers the full diapering range.
Does it hold enough for overnight?
Not on its own. The knitted cotton is absorbent but fairly thin — Disana designed it to be used with a booster for heavier wetting. For overnight, tuck a Disana Brushed Cotton Booster Pad inside the diaper before tying. Paired with a wool cover on top, this is a fully natural-fiber overnight system.
What's the difference between this and the EcoAble Hemp Night Fitted Diaper?
Both are fitted diapers that require a cover. The main differences: material (this is 100% organic cotton; the EcoAble Hemp is 55% hemp, 45% cotton — hemp holds more moisture); fasteners (this uses ties; the EcoAble uses snaps); and construction (this has no elastics; the EcoAble has leg and waist elastics). If you prioritize zero synthetic materials, choose this. If you prioritize maximum overnight absorbency and familiar snap fasteners, choose the hemp fitted.

All EcoAble orders ship in plain, unmarked packaging.

Soft, cute and good value fitted diaper!

Published by Dal on Dec 11th 2021

It’s very soft organic cotton diaper! It’s flexible to fit perfectly on my baby and it never leaks!(blow out proof) I use them even without a wool diaper cover during the days and still doesn’t leak, just damp, so I know it’s time to change it. It’s great to be used from newborn to 5yrs!(money saver) I recommend to wash it before you use it because I noticed when I hand washed it first, dark brown color water came out nonstop. It stinks too! I had to hand wash five times to get rid of that brown stinky water, then I washed them in the wash machine as well. After machine wash, it tangled all together, but it wasn’t too hard to untangle them. Other than that, I love it very much! It’s worth all that hassle.
