Disana · Knitted Organic Merino Wool Pants
Disana Kids Knitted Wool Pants with Suspenders
A classic German wool baby pant in 100% organic merino, knitted in a substantial mid-weight (around 415 g/m²) for real winter warmth indoors and out. Removable suspenders, an extra-high waistband, and a generous harem cut leave plenty of room for cloth diapers, layering, and active play — from newborn through 4 years.
About Disana
A family-run German wool maker, since the early 1980s
Disana has been making organic wool clothing for babies and children in southern Germany for more than 40 years. They are a founding member of the International Association of Natural Textiles (IVN) and were among the first companies in the world to offer GOTS-certified woolens. Every step — knitting, sewing, assembly, and quality control — takes place at Disana’s own facilities or with neighbouring partners in Germany.
The merino fiber comes from mulesing-free flocks in Patagonia, then is spun and dyed in central Europe before being knit in Germany. Nothing is treated with synthetic finishes. Even the buttons and sewing thread are made from naturally derived materials.
When to reach for these
A real-world wool pant for cool and cold months
At roughly 415 g/m², the Disana knitted pant sits firmly in mid- to heavy-weight wool territory — thicker than Disana’s 300 g/m² lightweight leggings and much warmer than any cotton legging. Parents pair them with a wool or wool/silk base layer for outdoor play in the cold, or wear them on their own indoors as cozy house pants, pajama bottoms, or a layer over a cloth diaper.
Why parents keep coming back to these
The harem cut leaves real room for a bulky overnight cloth diaper, the high waistband stays put on round baby bellies, and the rollable cuffs let one size fit through two seasons of growth. They get softer with each gentle wash and routinely get passed down between siblings.

Fabric weight
Approximately 415 g/m² — a substantial mid-weight knit that is much warmer than a lightweight wool legging.

Made in
Knitted, sewn, and finished in Germany at Disana’s own facilities. Wooden buttons made from naturally derived materials.
kbT / GOTS / IVN BEST means the wool comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards, and the entire processing chain — including any dyes — meets organic textile standards. There are no chemical softeners or synthetic finishes; the softness you feel is the wool itself.
Key features
What makes this pant work
Naturally temperature-regulating
Merino wool warms in cold weather and breathes in milder temperatures, so the same pant works across a wide seasonal range instead of overheating a child the moment they start moving.
Room for a cloth diaper
The harem-style seat and generous rise were designed around a fastened cloth diaper. Babies in disposables or training pants get the same comfortable fit with even more room to move.
Odor- and dirt-resistant
Wool is naturally odor-resistant and surface-shedding, so spots usually brush off and pants can be aired between wears. Most families wash these every few weeks at most.
Grows with the child
The plain-knit fabric stretches, the cuffs roll, and Disana sizing is cut generously by design. Many children wear a single size through two seasons.
Sizing
Choose by height, not by age
European sizes are based on child’s height in centimeters. Disana intentionally cuts these generously so the pant grows with the child — if your child is at the upper end of an age range or tall for their age, size up.

Honest assessment
Who these are right for — and who they aren’t
A great fit if
You want a real winter-weight wool pant in a natural, untreated fiber; you cloth-diaper and need room in the seat; you’re building a layering wardrobe for cold-climate living, Waldorf-style dressing, or sensitive skin; or you simply want one heirloom-quality pant that lasts through siblings.
Trade-offs to know
Because the knit is stretchy and elastane-free, very lean toddlers may find the waist a little loose without the suspenders — that’s exactly what the suspenders are for. The fabric is mid-weight and warm; in a hot indoor climate, reach for Disana’s 300 g/m² lightweight leggings instead.
Care commitment
These need wool-appropriate care: hand wash or gentle wool cycle in cold water with a wool-specific detergent, no tumble drying. Wool is forgiving in daily use — most spots brush off and airing between wears is usually enough — but hot water and agitation will felt and shrink it.
Care instructions
Simple wool care, once you learn it
Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No fabric softener
Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently in a towel — never wring. Lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat. Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing — airing between wears is often enough.
Optional: a lanolin treatment every few weeks restores water resistance and softness, which is useful if you also use the pants as a daytime diaper cover over a thick cotton diaper.
Frequently asked questions
What buyers ask about Disana knitted wool pants
Are these merino wool pants itchy?
Disana uses fine organic merino, not the coarse wool people remember from old sweaters. Most babies and sensitive-skinned children wear them comfortably with no base layer underneath. A very small percentage of people are sensitive to wool of any kind — if your child has reacted to wool before, start with a wool/silk blend base layer underneath as the gentlest option.
What is the fabric weight in GSM?
Approximately 415 g/m². That is meaningfully warmer than Disana’s 300 g/m² lightweight ribbed leggings and roughly the equivalent of a sturdy winter sweater, but knit, stretchy, and shaped as a pant.
Can I use these as a wool diaper cover?
Yes — many cloth-diapering families do exactly that. Lanolize the pants first (apply liquid lanolin in cool water, let soak, then drip dry). Once lanolized, the wool repels moisture and works as a breathable, plastic-free cover over a fastened fitted or flat cloth diaper. Re-lanolize every few weeks or whenever the wool starts to feel less water-resistant.
What size should I order?
Always choose by your child’s height in centimeters rather than by age. Disana sizing is cut generously on purpose so the pants grow with the child — if your child is at the upper end of an age range or tall for their age, size up. The cuffs roll, so you can buy a size larger and unroll them as your child grows.
Are these warm enough for outdoor winter wear?
At 415 g/m² they are a substantial mid-weight knit and are warm enough on their own for cool autumn and mild winter days. For deep winter outdoor play, layer them over a merino base-layer pant or wear them under boiled wool walker outerwear — that combination is the classic European wool layering system.
How do I wash them without ruining the wool?
Wool felts and shrinks when exposed to heat and agitation. Hand wash or use a wool/delicate cycle in cold water with a wool-specific detergent, press water out gently in a towel, and lay flat to dry. Never tumble dry. Wool needs washing far less often than cotton — air the pants between wears and most of the time that’s all they need.
What certifications do these have?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and IVN BEST — the two strictest organic textile standards in the world. The wool is also certified mulesing-free, meaning the sheep are raised under animal welfare standards that prohibit mulesing.
Where are they made?
The organic merino fiber is sourced from mulesing-free flocks in Patagonia, then spun and dyed in central Europe. All knitting, sewing, and finishing take place at Disana’s own facilities in southern Germany.
