Disana · Merino Wool Baby Overall

Disana Knitted Overall — 100% Organic Merino Wool Baby Suit

A one-piece knitted merino wool overall for newborns and babies 0–12 months, made in Germany from GOTS-certified organic wool. The elastic purl-stitch knit traps warmth, stretches with every kick, and folds over at the feet so no socks are needed.

Made in Germany by Disana

Disana is a family-run German natural-fiber maker with more than 40 years of history, best known for its boiled wool outerwear and knitted merino baby clothing. The wool comes from mulesing-free merino sheep raised under certified organic livestock farming (kbT), and every overall is knitted, sewn, and finished at Disana's own facilities in southern Germany. The entire production chain is GOTS certified — right down to the boxwood buttons.

A First-Year Layer for Cool Days, Naps, and Outings

This wool baby onesie works as a warm all-in-one layer from the newborn weeks through the first year. In fall and winter, wear it over a cotton or wool/silk bodysuit as a cozy mid layer indoors or under a bunting outdoors. In spring and on cool summer evenings, it can be worn on its own. Because merino wool is temperature-regulating rather than simply warm, it buffers your baby against swings between heated rooms and chilly air — especially valuable for newborns, who can't yet regulate body temperature well on their own.

Fold-over feet
The leg cuffs fold down over your baby's feet, keeping toes warm without socks or booties — and fold back up as your baby grows.

100% Organic Merino Wool, Purl-Stitch Knit

The overall is knitted from 100% organic merino virgin wool in a purl stitch (left knit) at approximately 415 g/m² — a substantial, warm knit weight. The wide, open stitches of the purl knit trap a generous layer of insulating air, so the fabric stores heat without overheating, while staying stretchy in every direction for unrestricted kicking and wiggling. Fine merino fibers are soft against newborn skin, naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant. Wide, soft cuffs at the wrists and ankles keep everything in place, and four large boxwood buttons run down to the crotch for easy dressing — even on a sleeping baby.

Why Parents Choose This Merino Wool Overall

Temperature-Regulating Warmth
The open purl knit stores heat without overheating, and merino wool wicks moisture away while staying warm even when damp — ideal for newborns who can't yet regulate their own temperature.
Stretches With Every Kick
The left knit is elastic in all directions, moving with your baby's first kicks and wiggles instead of restricting them.
Easy Dressing
Four large boxwood buttons reach to the crotch, making it simple to dress or undress your baby — even mid-nap.
Feet Stay Warm, No Socks Needed
Fold-over leg cuffs cover little feet on cool days, then fold back as your baby grows into the size.

Disana Size Chart (by Height)

EU Size Age Baby's Height
50/56 0–3 months 19–22 in (50–56 cm)
62/68 3–6 months 24–27 in (62–68 cm)
74/80 6–12 months 29–31 in (74–80 cm)

European sizing runs slightly slim — if your baby is at the upper end of an age range or tall for their age, size up. Choosing by height (in cm) is more reliable than by age.

Is This the Right Overall for Your Baby?

Best for
Newborns and babies in their first year who need a warm, breathable all-in-one layer for fall, winter, and cool spring days. A favorite among parents seeking chemical-free, GOTS-certified merino wool baby clothes — and a classic gift for new parents and baby showers.
Trade-offs to know
Fine merino is soft enough for most babies, but a small percentage of children are sensitive to wool. If your baby has reacted to wool before, start with a wool/silk blend layer underneath. This is a warm knit — in heated rooms above roughly 72°F it may be too much over heavy layers. And like all untreated wool, it requires gentle hand or wool-cycle washing; hot water or tumble drying will felt and shrink it.
The investment case
This is a heritage German garment at a heritage price — justified by certified organic fiber, in-house German manufacturing, and durability. Wool rarely needs washing, the knit holds its shape, and these overalls routinely outlast one baby and get passed on to the next.

Simple Wool Care — Once You Know the Routine

Hand wash or delicate machine wash Cold water Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring. Lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct sunlight. Merino wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing — airing the overall out between wears is usually enough. With proper care, this piece lasts for years and is often passed between children.

Common Questions

Is merino wool itchy for a newborn?
Fine merino is meaningfully different from coarse wool — its fibers are thin enough to bend against the skin rather than prickle, and Disana's organic merino is soft enough for most babies and sensitive-skinned adults. A small percentage of children are still sensitive to wool; if yours has reacted before, try a wool/silk or cotton layer underneath first.
What season is this overall for?
Primarily fall, winter, and early spring. At approximately 415 g/m² it's a warm knit — wear it as an outer layer indoors or a mid layer under a bunting or blanket outdoors. On cool summer evenings it can work alone, but it's too warm for hot weather.
What do I put under it?
A cotton, wool, or wool/silk bodysuit works well. In cold weather, a long-sleeve wool/silk base layer underneath creates a classic two-layer wool system that regulates temperature exceptionally well.
Does my baby need socks with it?
No — the leg cuffs fold over your baby's feet to keep them warm, and fold back up as your baby grows. For outings in cold weather you can still add wool booties on top.
How do I wash it without ruining it?
Cold water only, with a wool wash, by hand or on a wool/delicate cycle. Never use hot water, agitation, or a tumble dryer — wool will felt and shrink. In practice you'll rarely wash it: wool self-cleans, so airing out or spot-cleaning handles most days.
What do GOTS and kbT mean?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading worldwide standard for organic textiles, covering both organic fiber farming and the entire processing chain including dyes and finishes. kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) means the wool comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards — Disana's merino is also mulesing-free.
Which size should I choose?
Go by your baby's height in centimeters rather than age. European sizing runs slightly slim, so if your baby is at the upper end of an age range or tall for their age, size up. The fold-over cuffs give extra room to grow.
Is this a good baby shower gift?
Yes — the 50/56 (0–3 month) size is a classic newborn gift. It comes in colors that suit boys, girls, and gender-neutral wardrobes, and a German-made organic merino piece is the kind of gift that gets used daily and handed down.
