Hirsch-Natur · Kids Wool Tights

Organic Wool Tights for Children — Warmth & Breathability Layer

Fine-knit 100% organic wool tights from the German legwear specialists. Naturally temperature-regulating, odor-resistant, and ideal for layering in spring, autumn, and winter. Sizes 6 months to 8 years.

Hirsch-Natur, based in Coburg, Germany, has been manufacturing premium knit socks and legwear since 1928. The company is renowned for fine-gauge knitting and attention to natural fibers—pioneering organic wool production in Germany when others in the industry were pursuing synthetics. Hirsch-Natur is kbT certified and a founding member of the International Association of Natural Textiles (IVN), reflecting their commitment to controlled organic animal farming and rigorous textile standards. These tights are knitted in-house and represent decades of legwear expertise.

When to Wear Wool Tights

These medium-weight wool tights provide warmth without excessive bulk, making them ideal for layering under trousers, skirts, dresses, shorts, or school uniforms during transitional and cold seasons. The fine knit wicks moisture while the wool naturally regulates temperature, so children stay comfortable whether moving indoors and out. Worn during spring (60–68°F / 15–20°C), autumn (50–65°F / 10–18°C), and winter (below 50°F / 10°C), these tights bridge the gap between bare legs and heavy synthetic bases.

Layering tip: Wear under pants, skirts, dresses, or any bottoms for an extra layer of warmth during cool weather. The tights add insulation without bulk, making them ideal under slim-fit trousers or dresses.

Fiber & Construction
Fiber
100% organic virgin merino wool, fine-gauge knit. No synthetic stretches (spandex, lycra, nylon) or chemical finishes.
Weight & Hand
Medium-weight. Soft, smooth hand from fine merino fiber. Naturally breathable with no itchy feel at this micron count and knit gauge.
Manufacturing
Knitted in-house in Coburg, Germany. No off-shore spinning or assembly—the entire production chain is controlled by Hirsch-Natur.
Certifications
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) certification confirms organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards.
Why Wool Tights
Temperature Regulating
Wool breathes when warm and insulates when cool, adjusting to your child's activity level and the outdoor temperature. No overheating in layers; no chilling in autumn wind.
Naturally Odor Resistant
Wool resists bacterial growth, meaning tights can be worn multiple times between washes. A good airing out often refreshes them more effectively than frequent washing.
Durability & Longevity
Fine merino wool is resilient and long-lasting. These tights are often passed between siblings and hold up to years of wear with proper care, making them a smart investment.
Safe for Sensitive Skin
No chemical dyes or finishes. GOTS certification ensures the entire supply chain—from fiber to finished fabric—meets rigorous eco and safety standards. Fine-gauge merino is gentle enough for eczema-prone children.
Sizing

European sizing runs slightly slim. If your child is at the upper end of an age range or is tall for their age, consider sizing up one size for a more relaxed fit.

Age (Approximate) EU Size Inseam (inches) Foot Length (inches) Rise (inches) 1/2 Waist (relaxed elastic)
6–12 months 56–62 9 3.5 9 7"
12–18 months 68–74 9 4.5 10 7"
18–24 months 80–86 14.5 5 10 7"
2 years 92 15.5 5.5 10 7.5"
3 years 98 16.5 5.5 10 8"
4 years 104 19.5 6 10 8"
5 years 110 21.5 6 10 8"
6 years 116 22 6.5 10.5 8"
7 years 122 11.5 7 11 8.5"
8 years 128 14 8 12 9"

Measurement tip: Lay tights flat and measure from the top of the waistband to the foot seam for inseam; measure inside the foot for foot length. Take time to check these before ordering, as fit is age-variable and individual growth patterns differ.

Is This Right for Your Child?
Best For
Children with sensitive skin or a history of eczema; kids who layer clothing in cool weather; families seeking durable, chemical-free basics that last through multiple children; parents who value German manufacturing and transparent supply chains.
Trade-Offs to Consider
Wool requires hand washing or a wool cycle with cold water, unlike synthetic tights that can take hot machine washing. A small percentage of children react to any wool, even fine merino—if your child has had wool reactions before, start with a single pair to test, or begin with a wool/silk blend (which Hirsch-Natur also offers). These tights cost more than synthetic or cotton blends, but they last years and resist odor better, reducing overall wash frequency and environmental impact. Sizing can vary; always measure your child before ordering.
Investment Case
Fine merino wool is a one-time investment that pays off. A pair worn by one child, then passed to the next, easily justifies cost. Wool's durability, temperature regulation, and odor resistance mean you wash less and replace less often than synthetic tights. Over a childhood, the per-wear cost is significantly lower than buying cheap synthetics repeatedly.
Care Instructions
Hand wash or delicate cycle Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble dry

Hand wash: Fill a sink or basin with cool water (below 30°C / 86°F) and add a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan, Sonett, or Woolite Delicates). Submerge tights and gently agitate for 5 minutes. Do not rub or wring. Rinse thoroughly in cool water of the same temperature until soap is completely gone. A temperature shift during rinsing can cause felting. Gently squeeze out water—do not wring—then wrap in a clean towel and press to remove excess moisture.

Machine wash: Use the wool or delicate cycle on your washing machine with cold water only. Fill the drum halfway to three-quarters full. Use a gentle ecological detergent and keep spin speed below 400 revolutions per minute. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel, reshaping to size if needed. Flat-drying prevents stretching and maintains fit.

Drying: Never use a tumble dryer—heat causes wool to felt and shrink irreversibly. Hang or lay flat in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Wool dries quickly and rarely needs a full dry cycle between wears; airing out for a day or two is often sufficient, particularly because wool resists odor naturally.

Odor management: Wool is naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant. Air tights between wears rather than washing after every wear. A good airing in fresh air or gentle hand washing every few wears is typically all that's needed. Proper care and infrequent washing extends the life of these tights dramatically.

Pilling: Fine merino rarely pills if washed gently and not tumble-dried. Should light pilling occur, remove with a wool comb or a fresh razorblade held at a shallow angle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these tights itchy?
No. Hirsch-Natur uses fine merino wool at a gauge specifically chosen for next-to-skin comfort. The fiber is smooth and soft, not coarse. However, a very small percentage of children are sensitive to any wool fiber, even fine merino. If your child has reacted to wool in the past, we recommend starting with a single pair to test, or asking about Hirsch-Natur's wool/silk blend tights, which are even softer and gentler for the most sensitive kids.
How often should I wash these tights?
Wool resists odor naturally, so these tights can be worn 2–3 times between washes. Air them thoroughly between wears—hang them on a clothesline or lay flat overnight. A gentle hand wash in cool water with wool detergent every few wears is all that's needed. Frequent washing wears out any garment; wool's odor resistance lets you wash less and extend the life of the tights.
Will these shrink?
Only if exposed to hot water or high heat in a dryer. Always use cold water and air-dry flat. If you accidentally use warm water or a dryer, the wool will felt and shrink permanently—so cold water and no heat are non-negotiable. Once you establish the routine, it becomes second nature.
What makes these different from cotton or synthetic tights?
Wool is naturally temperature-regulating—it keeps kids warm without overheating, unlike synthetics that trap heat. Wool is also naturally odor- and bacteria-resistant, so these tights stay fresh longer and need fewer washes, which extends their life and saves money over time. Cotton is breathable but not as warm or odor-resistant. And critically, these Hirsch-Natur tights contain no synthetic stretches (spandex, nylon, lycra) or chemical dyes, making them safe for kids with sensitive skin or eczema. They're GOTS certified from fiber to finished product.
Does Hirsch-Natur make other wool products?
Yes. Hirsch-Natur specializes in legwear and makes a full range of organic wool socks for kids and adults. All are made in Germany with the same commitment to fine merino, kbT certification, and in-house knitting. Browse our collection to find other wool socks and legwear pieces.
My child is between sizes. Which should I choose?
Size up. European sizing runs slightly slim, and wool tights should fit comfortably without pressure on the waist or legs. A tighter fit restricts movement and can create discomfort; a slightly roomy fit allows for growth and comfortable layering underneath. Always measure your child against the size chart before ordering.
How long do these tights last?
With proper care, fine merino wool tights last years. Many families pass them between siblings without issue. They do not pill or wear thin like synthetic tights. The waistband elastic may eventually lose elasticity after 5–7 years of regular wear, but the wool fiber itself remains intact. This is why wool is considered a true investment piece.
