Disana · Boiled Wool Winter Pants with Suspenders

Disana Kids Winter Pants — 100% Organic Boiled Merino Wool

Dense 420 g/m² boiled merino wool snow pants with a high waist, knitted suspenders, and reinforced knees and seat. A natural, plastic-free alternative to synthetic snow pants — knitted in Germany from GOTS and IVN BEST certified organic wool.

Made in Germany by Disana

Disana is a family-run German manufacturer that has specialized in organic wool clothing for babies and children for over 40 years. Their boiled wool outerwear — jackets, overalls, and these trousers — is a staple of forest kindergartens and outdoor preschools across Europe. The merino wool comes from certified organic, mulesing-free flocks (kbT — kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung, meaning certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards), and every step from spinning to knitting meets GOTS and IVN BEST standards, the two most rigorous organic textile certifications in the world.

Cold-Weather Outdoor Play, Fall Through Early Spring

These are outer-layer winter pants for temperatures roughly 50°F (10°C) and below — snowy playgrounds, frosty hikes, damp autumn woods, and sledding days. The loose cut is designed for layering: worn over wool long johns or leggings, they function as a breathable, plastic-free alternative to synthetic snow pants. On milder transitional days, they work over a regular cotton layer. They are not summer pants; for warm weather, Disana's lighter knitted merino pants are the better choice.

Layering tip
For snow days, pair with a merino wool base layer underneath and a Disana boiled wool jacket on top. Wool layers trap warm air between them while staying breathable, so active kids stay warm without overheating or getting clammy.

What Boiled Merino Wool Actually Is

Boiled wool is knitted merino wool that has been washed in hot water and agitated so the fibers felt together, creating a dense, naturally water-resistant, wind-blocking fabric. The main body of these pants is 100% organic boiled merino wool at 420 g/m² (GSM) — a heavyweight winter fabric. The knees and seat carry an additional reinforcing layer of boiled wool (approximately 260 g/m²), exactly where active kids crawl, kneel, slide, and sit in the snow.

Fiber & weight
100% organic merino wool (kbT), boiled/fulled construction, 420 g/m² main fabric with reinforced 260 g/m² panels on knees and seat. Mulesing-free wool sourced from organic flocks in Patagonia, spun in Europe, knitted in Germany.
Certifications
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard — covering organic fiber farming and the entire processing chain, including dyes) and IVN BEST, the strictest organic textile standard in Europe.
Fit & design
High waist covers the tummy and lower back; two knitted suspenders button on and can be removed or crossed in back. Loose cut leaves room for a wool base layer underneath.

Why Parents Choose These Over Synthetic Snow Pants

Naturally water- and wind-resistant
The dense felted surface and wool's natural lanolin shed snow, drizzle, and wind. Dried mud simply brushes off. Water-resistant, not waterproof — ideal for snow and damp weather, not heavy downpours.
Warm even when damp
Merino wool retains insulating power while absorbing up to a third of its weight in moisture, so a snowy afternoon doesn't end in a cold, clammy child the way soaked cotton does.
Reinforced knees and seat
Double-thickness boiled wool panels where wear actually happens. These pants are built for crawling, kneeling, and sledding, and routinely survive multiple children.
High waist plus suspenders
The extra-high waistband keeps the tummy and sensitive lower back covered during climbing and bending, and the buttoned knitted suspenders keep everything in place — nothing rides down mid-play.

Disana Size Chart

EU Size Age Height
86–92 1–2 years 34–36 in
98–104 3–4 years 38–41 in
110–116 5–6 years 43–45 in
122–128 7–8 years 48–50 in

European sizing runs slightly slim — if your child is at the upper end of an age range or tall for their age, size up. The loose cut is intentional, leaving room for a wool base layer underneath.

Is This the Right Winter Pant for Your Child?

Best for
Kids who play outside in cold, snowy, or damp weather — forest school students, sledding enthusiasts, and families replacing synthetic snow pants with a breathable, plastic-free option. Also a strong choice for children who overheat in nylon snow gear.
Trade-offs to know
Boiled wool is water-resistant, not waterproof — for hours in slush or pouring rain, a shell layer is still needed. The fabric is dense and structured rather than stretchy. And while fine merino is soft, a small percentage of children are sensitive to wool; these are an outer layer, though, so they're usually worn over a base layer rather than against skin.
The investment
These cost more than big-box snow pants, but the 420 g/m² construction with reinforced panels is built to last through multiple winters and multiple children. Resale value on Disana boiled wool is consistently strong in natural-fiber parent communities.

Caring for Boiled Wool

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water Wool wash Lay flat to dry Brush surface to refresh

Boiled wool rarely needs full washing — most spots can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth, and dried mud brushes right off. When a full wash is needed, hand wash or use a wool cycle with cold water and a wool-specific detergent, press water out gently, and lay flat to dry away from direct heat. One important warning: hot water, regular detergent, agitation, or a tumble dryer will felt and shrink wool permanently. The routine is simple once learned, and wool's natural odor resistance means airing between wears is usually enough.

Common Questions

Are these wool pants itchy?
Boiled merino is dense but soft, and these are an outer layer typically worn over a base layer rather than directly on skin. Fine merino is comfortable for most children; if your child has reacted to wool before, a wool/silk or cotton base layer underneath keeps wool entirely off the skin.
Can these replace synthetic snow pants?
For most snow play, yes. The dense 420 g/m² boiled wool blocks wind, sheds dry snow, and stays warm even when damp. For prolonged wet slush or sitting in melting snow for hours, some families add a thin waterproof shell over them.
Are they waterproof?
No — water-resistant. The felted surface and natural lanolin shed snow and light rain, but sustained soaking will eventually get through. That's the honest trade-off for a fully natural, breathable fabric.
What temperature range are they for?
Roughly 50°F (10°C) and below as an outer layer. Over a merino base layer, they handle freezing temperatures and snow days comfortably; on milder fall days they work over regular clothing.
Do the suspenders come off?
Yes — the knitted suspenders button on, so they can be removed or crossed in the back for a better fit.
How often do they need washing?
Rarely. Wool naturally resists odor and dirt — brush off dried mud, spot-clean with a damp cloth, and air them out between wears. A full cold-water wool wash is only needed occasionally.
What size should I order?
Order by your child's height using the chart above. European sizing runs slightly slim, so if your child is tall for their age or at the upper end of a range, size up — the generous cut and suspenders make growing room easy to manage.
What certifications do these pants carry?
GOTS and IVN BEST certification covering the full production chain, with kbT organic, mulesing-free merino wool. The pants are knitted in Germany by Disana.

    Warm and comfy

Published by Kathleen on Nov 15th 2021

Our 3 year old granddaughter wore these recently on a hiking trip in New Hampshire. They kept her warm all weekend. Day one she fell (or splashed)in mud. My daughter was trying to figure out how to clean them. She left them out to dry, shook them off, and they were as good as new the next morning. Amazing! Wool is remarkable. I’m certain she’ll wear them a lot all winter. And they’re rolled up about 4 inches, so we’re hoping they still fit next year.
