Engel · Boiled Merino Wool Overall Romper

Engel Hooded Boiled Wool Baby Snowsuit

A dense, naturally wind- and water-resistant boiled wool overall in 100% organic merino — Engel's heritage outerwear piece for babies and toddlers, made in Germany and certified to the highest natural-textile standards. Sizes 6 months to 3 years.

Made by a German family wool maker since 1930

Engel Naturkleidung is one of the most respected names in European natural-fiber clothing. Founded in 1930 and still family-run, Engel knits and sews almost everything in its own manufactory in Pfullingen, southern Germany, with partner workshops within roughly 50 km. The merino wool comes from certified organic livestock farming (kbT) — fine, mulesing-free fleece sourced from South America and processed in Germany. Around 95% of Engel's range carries either the GOTS or the IVN BEST seal, and this overall is one of the IVN BEST pieces.

For natural-fiber parents, Engel sits in the same conversation as Disana and Reiff — heritage German makers whose pieces are bought once and often passed between siblings.

An outer layer for cold-weather walks, strollers, and snow days

This is a true outerwear piece, not a base layer. Boiled wool is dense, wind-blocking, and naturally water-resistant, which makes the romper ideal for fall, winter, and chilly spring outings — stroller rides, the playground in the cold, snow play, and outdoor errands. Layer a wool or wool/silk bodysuit and tights underneath in deep winter; in milder shoulder-season weather, a cotton or wool long-sleeve underneath is enough.

Where this overall fits in the wardrobe
Reach for boiled wool when you would otherwise reach for a synthetic snowsuit or fleece bunting. Reach for Engel's softer wool fleece or wool/silk pieces for indoor wear, sleep, and base layers.

100% organic boiled merino wool, IVN BEST certified

Fiber
100% organic merino wool from kbT (controlled organic livestock farming). Mulesing-free. The fine merino fibers are fundamentally different from coarse wool — they sit softly against skin once the romper is broken in, and stay warm even in damp weather.
Construction
Boiled wool, also called Wollwalk: knitted merino that is washed in hot water and gently agitated so the fibers felt together into a dense, smooth fabric. The result is wind-blocking, naturally water-resistant, and far warmer than its weight suggests.
Fabric weight (GSM)
Approximately 450 GSM (grams per square meter), in line with traditional German Wollwalk outerwear (typical range 400–500 GSM). This is significantly heavier than wool fleece (250–350 GSM) or interlock base layers (140–200 GSM) — appropriate for an outer shell.
Country of origin
Designed, knit, fulled, and sewn in Germany. Engel's own manufactory in Pfullingen handles most production, with partner workshops within a 50 km radius.
Certifications
IVN BEST certified — the strictest natural-textile standard worldwide, requiring 100% controlled-organic natural fibers and exceeding GOTS on chemical, environmental, and social criteria.
Hardware
Full-length front zipper for fast dressing. Engel uses nickel-free zippers and snaps across the range — important for sensitive skin.

A natural-fiber alternative to a synthetic snowsuit

Temperature-regulating
Merino wool keeps a baby warm without overheating — critical for stroller naps and indoor-outdoor transitions where synthetic snowsuits often cause sweating.
Warm even when damp
Wool fibers absorb up to about 30% of their weight in moisture before feeling wet, and continue to insulate. A boiled wool overall handles snow and light rain comfortably.
Wind-blocking shell
The fulling process closes the fabric structure, so cold wind does not pass through the way it does with knitted wool or fleece.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool resists bacteria growth and is self-cleaning when aired out — most parents wash this overall only a handful of times per season.
Roll-over cuffs and hood
Sleeves and legs can be folded down to cover hands and feet in cold weather. The attached hood replaces a separate hat in most conditions.
Built to be passed down
Boiled wool is one of the most durable wool constructions made. With routine care, the romper holds its shape and finish through multiple children.

Choose by EU size or age range

Engel uses the standard German height-based sizing system. European sizing runs slightly slim — if your child is at the upper end of an age range, tall for their age, or you want room to layer underneath, size up. Boiled wool does not stretch the way knitted wool does.

EU size Approx. age Approx. height
74 / 80 6 – 12 months 74 – 80 cm (29 – 31½ in)
86 / 92 12 – 18 months 86 – 92 cm (34 – 36 in)
98 / 104 18 – 24 months 98 – 104 cm (38½ – 41 in)
110 / 116 2 – 3 years 110 – 116 cm (43 – 45½ in)
Sizing tip
Pick the size that matches your child's current height rather than their age. The roll-over cuffs let you buy slightly large at the start of the season and fold them down as your child grows.

Who this romper works well for — and what to know first

Excellent for
Babies and toddlers in cold-climate fall and winter weather; parents who want a natural-fiber alternative to synthetic snowsuits; families using strollers, carriers, or daily outdoor walks; second and third children, since the wool holds up beautifully across years of use.
Things to know
Boiled wool is water-resistant, not waterproof — it handles snow and light rain, but it is not the right layer for a heavy downpour. The fabric is dense and not stretchy, so try the romper on at home first if you are between sizes. The price reflects German manufacture, organic merino, and IVN BEST certification.
Care commitment
Wool care is simple once learned, but it is not the same as cotton. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will felt and shrink the romper. Most parents wash it only a few times a season — wool airs clean between wears.

Boiled wool is low-maintenance once you know the rules

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying Brush surface to refresh

Boiled wool rarely needs a full wash. Most spots can be sponged off with a damp cloth, and surface dirt brushes off once the fabric has dried. When a wash is needed, hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine — cold only, both wash and rinse at the same temperature. Press water out gently. Never wring, twist, or tumble dry. Lay flat away from direct heat to dry.

Between wears, hang the romper in fresh air for a few hours. Wool naturally regenerates in oxygen-rich air, and odors typically lift on their own.

Pre-wash not required

Engel produces under IVN BEST and GOTS standards with no harmful dyes or chemical finishes, so there is no need to wash the romper before first wear.

Common questions about Engel boiled wool

Is boiled wool itchy on a baby's skin?
Engel's boiled wool is made from fine organic merino, which is meaningfully softer than coarse traditional wool. As an outer layer worn over a base layer, the romper does not sit directly against most of the baby's skin. If your baby has reacted to wool before, start with a wool/silk base layer underneath.
What does GSM mean and why is it ~450 GSM here?
GSM stands for grams per square meter — the standard fabric weight measurement. Boiled wool typically falls between 400 and 500 GSM, which is what makes it warm and wind-blocking. Lighter wool fleece pieces are around 250–350 GSM, and base-layer interlock is 140–200 GSM. This romper is built as an outer shell, so the heavier weight is intentional.
Is this overall waterproof?
No — boiled wool is naturally water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles snow, sleet, and light rain comfortably because wool absorbs moisture without feeling cold or wet. For a heavy downpour, layer a rain shell over the top.
What is IVN BEST and how is it different from GOTS?
Both are organic textile certifications. GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard — is the leading worldwide standard for organic textiles. IVN BEST is stricter, requiring 100% controlled-organic natural fibers and tighter limits on chemicals and processing. Engel carries both certifications across its range; this romper is IVN BEST certified.
What does kbT mean?
kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) means the wool comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards, including a ban on mulesing. It is the wool equivalent of kbA (controlled organic agriculture) for plant fibers.
Will boiled wool shrink if I wash it wrong?
Yes — hot water, agitation, or a tumble dryer will cause wool to felt further and shrink. Cold water, gentle handling, and laying flat to dry are the rules. Once you have the routine down, it is no harder than washing a wool sweater.
How do I choose between boiled wool and wool fleece for a baby?
Boiled wool is denser, more wind-blocking, and more water-resistant — the right choice for outerwear and cold weather. Wool fleece is softer, lighter, and warmer next to the body — better for indoor wear, lighter outerwear, and mild conditions. Many families own both and use them in different temperature ranges.
Can the romper be passed down to a sibling?
Yes — boiled wool is one of the most durable constructions in wool clothing, and Engel's nickel-free zipper is built to last. With proper care, the overall regularly serves two or three children.
