Engel · Women's Merino Wool & Silk Base Layer

Engel Women's Merino Wool & Silk Thermal Leggings — 190 GSM Organic Base Layer

A lightweight 190 GSM merino wool and silk base layer from Engel — 70% organic merino wool and 30% silk for naturally temperature-regulating, breathable warmth without bulk. IVN BEST and kbT certified, knit and finished in Germany since 1927.

Engel — German Natural Fiber Specialists Since 1927

Engel Natur has been making organic merino wool, wool/silk, and cotton base layers in Germany for nearly a century. They are one of the most respected names in European natural-fiber clothing — the brand that natural-fiber researchers, Waldorf families, and women shopping for sensitive skin reach for first.

Every Engel piece is made from kbT-certified organic merino wool (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung — controlled organic animal husbandry with strict animal welfare standards) and carries IVN BEST certification, the most rigorous textile standard in the world. These thermal leggings are knit, sewn, and finished in Germany.

A Year-Round Merino Wool Base Layer for Real Life

At 190 GSM, these are a mid-light weight — the sweet spot for women who want merino wool leggings they can actually wear most of the year, not just in deep winter. They work as thermal underwear under jeans or trousers on cold days, as standalone leggings around the house, as travel sleepwear, and as a transitional-season layer when mornings are chilly and afternoons aren't.

Cold Weather
Thermal Under Layer
Wear under jeans, trousers, or ski pants for warmth without bulk. Fine merino wool sits flat against skin so nothing bunches.
Indoors & Lounge
Loungewear & Sleep
Soft enough to sleep in. The wool/silk blend regulates temperature through the night so you don't wake up overheated.
Travel & Transition
Transitional Seasons
Light enough for spring and fall on their own, warm enough to layer in winter. One pair of merino wool leggings covers a lot of weather.

What These Merino Wool & Silk Leggings Are Made Of

70% Organic Merino Wool
Fine merino from kbT-certified organic farms — naturally temperature-regulating, breathable, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant. Fine micron count means it sits softly against skin without the scratch of coarse wool.
30% Silk
Silk softens the hand of the fabric, adds a subtle sheen, and makes the blend gentler on sensitive skin than pure wool. The silk also adds strength and a smooth feel against the body.
190 GSM Fine Rib Knit
A mid-light weight (190 grams per square meter) in a fine rib knit that stretches with the body and recovers its shape. Lighter than winter base layers, warmer than summer-weight pieces.
Elastic Waistband
A soft elastic waistband sits comfortably without digging in, so the leggings stay put under other layers or worn on their own.
Made in Germany
Knit, sewn, and finished in Engel's German facility. The complete supply chain — from organic farm to finished garment — is controlled and certified.
IVN BEST & kbT Certified
IVN BEST is the most rigorous textile certification in the world — stricter than GOTS on chemical inputs and animal welfare. kbT certifies the wool comes from organic, ethically managed flocks.

Key Features at a Glance

Temperature-Regulating
Merino wool keeps you warm in cold weather and cool in mild — not just insulating, but actively balancing.
Breathable & Moisture-Wicking
Wool moves moisture away from skin so you stay dry during activity or under layers.
Odor-Resistant
Wool is naturally bacteria-resistant, so leggings stay fresh between wears with just airing.
Skin-Friendly Wool/Silk Blend
The 30% silk content makes this one of the gentlest wool blends available — ideal for sensitive skin or first-time wool wearers.

Find Your Size

Engel uses European women's sizing. The fine rib knit is stretchy and forgiving, but European sizing runs slightly slim — if you are at the upper end of a size range, size up for a relaxed fit or stay true to size for a closer base-layer fit.

Size EU US Bust (cm) Waist (cm) Hip (cm)
S 36/38 4–6 84–88 66–70 92–96
M 40/42 8–10 92–96 74–78 100–104
L 44/46 12–14 100–104 82–86 108–112
XL 48/50 16–18 108–112 90–94 116–120
Sizing Tip
If you plan to wear these primarily as a base layer under fitted clothing, stay true to size. If you want a relaxed lounge fit or are between sizes, size up.

Who These Are For — and a Few Trade-Offs

Who They Work Well For
Women who want a real merino wool base layer without the bulk or the scratch. The 30% silk content makes them a strong first-wool piece for skeptics, people with sensitive skin, or anyone who has reacted to coarser wool in the past. Excellent for travel, layering under work clothes, lounging at home, and sleepwear.
A Note on Wool Sensitivity
Fine merino at this micron count is soft enough for most sensitive-skinned adults, and the silk content softens it further. A small percentage of people are still wool-sensitive — if that's you, the wool/silk blend is the gentlest option to test. We always recommend wearing a new wool piece for an hour at home before committing to a long day.
Care Commitment
These need wool wash and cold water — no hot wash, no tumble dry, or they will felt and shrink. The good news: wool's odor resistance means you wash them far less often than cotton. Most owners wash every 4–6 wears with airing in between.
A Word on Price
These are a heritage German garment at heritage German prices. The construction, certifications, fiber quality, and longevity justify the investment — well-cared-for Engel pieces last for years and many women keep them for a decade or more.

Caring for Merino Wool & Silk

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring. Lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat.

Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing — airing your leggings overnight between wears is often enough to refresh them. With proper care, these pieces last for years, and many women find their Engel base layers improve with age.

Important
Hot water, agitation, and tumble drying will felt and shrink wool permanently. Cold water and gentle handling are non-negotiable — but once the routine is learned, it's quick and simple.

Common Questions About Engel Wool/Silk Leggings

Are these merino wool leggings itchy?
Engel uses fine merino wool blended with 30% silk, which is one of the softest wool blends available. The vast majority of wearers — including those with sensitive skin — find them comfortable next to skin. If you have reacted to wool before, the wool/silk blend is the gentlest place to start.
What does 190 GSM mean, and how warm is that?
GSM stands for grams per square meter — a measure of fabric weight. At 190 GSM, these merino wool leggings are mid-light weight: warmer than summer base layers (around 140–160 GSM) but lighter than heavy winter weights (250+ GSM). They are versatile enough for cold-weather layering and mild-weather standalone wear.
Can I wear these merino wool leggings as pajamas?
Yes — many women do. The wool/silk blend regulates body temperature through the night, so you don't wake up too hot or too cold. They're particularly popular for cold bedrooms, travel, and women going through perimenopause or menopause.
What is IVN BEST certification, and how is it different from GOTS?
IVN BEST is the most rigorous organic textile standard in the world. It is stricter than GOTS on chemical inputs, dyes, and animal welfare — for example, IVN BEST requires 100% organic fiber content, while GOTS allows up to 30% non-organic. Engel's IVN BEST certification is among the highest assurances of organic and ethical manufacturing available.
What does kbT mean on wool clothing?
kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) is the German certification for organic animal husbandry. It means the wool comes from sheep raised on certified organic farms with strict animal welfare standards — no mulesing, no synthetic chemicals, and verified humane treatment.
How often do I need to wash merino wool leggings?
Far less often than cotton. Wool's natural odor resistance means most women wash these every 4–6 wears, simply airing them out overnight in between. This makes them excellent travel garments — one pair can last a long trip.
Will Engel wool leggings shrink?
Not if cared for correctly. Cold water washing (by hand or wool cycle) and laying flat to dry will keep them in shape. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will felt and shrink wool — that's true of any wool garment, not specific to Engel.
Where are Engel merino wool leggings made?
Knit, sewn, and finished in Germany at Engel's facility. The wool comes from kbT-certified organic farms, and the entire production chain is controlled and certified to IVN BEST standards.

I love these. I’m happy I found these leggings. They are so soft and comfy. Perfect temperature control. I have very sensitive skin, with difficulty regulating body temperature. As soon as my size is available, I’ll order more.

This is my second pair. They are comfortable. I wear them for days and days and then just hang them up for a day or so. No need to wash. Well made too.
