Engel · Women's Merino Wool & Silk Base Layer

Engel Women's Merino Wool & Silk Long Sleeve Base Layer Top

A lightweight 190 GSM organic merino wool and silk base layer top, knitted in a fine, stretchy rib in Germany by Engel — one of Europe's most respected natural fiber brands since 1927. A soft long sleeve thermal undershirt for next-to-skin warmth, year-round.

Engel Natur — German merino wool specialists since 1927

Engel has been knitting natural-fiber base layers in Pfullingen, southern Germany, for nearly a century. The family-run mill is known for its uncompromising sourcing: fine merino virgin wool from organically farmed sheep (kbT certified), undyed silk, and a closed-loop production chain certified to IVN BEST — the highest ecological and social standard available in the textile industry. If you've spent any time in European natural-clothing communities, you already know the Engel wool name. If you haven't, this is the piece most often recommended as a first introduction to wearing 100 percent merino wool clothing next to skin.

A true year-round merino wool base layer

This is a fine-knit, lightweight thermal top designed to be worn directly against skin under everything else. Pull this merino wool undershirt on under a sweater for a chilly office, layer it beneath a shell for hiking or skiing, wear it as a soft merino wool long sleeve for travel and overnight flights, or use it as a gentle pajama top in cool bedrooms. The 190 GSM fabric is thin enough that it disappears under fitted clothing, but the wool's natural insulation gives you a meaningful temperature buffer in cold weather. In milder months, the same fiber properties wick moisture and help you stay cool — which is why merino works as a base layer year-round in a way that synthetic thermal underwear simply does not.

Best for
Cold-weather layering, outdoor activities (hiking, skiing, biking, walking), travel, sleepwear in cool rooms, and anyone seeking a chemical-free wool thermal shirt as an alternative to synthetic base layers.

70% organic merino wool, 30% silk — knitted in Germany

Fiber Composition
70% organic virgin merino wool (kbT) and 30% silk. The merino is a fine 19.5 micron yarn — well within the next-to-skin softness range — and the silk softens the hand and adds a subtle sheen.
Fabric Weight (GSM)
190 GSM (grams per square meter) — a lightweight knit. Warm enough for true winter layering, thin enough to wear under fitted clothing without bulk or visible lines. Comparable to mid-weight merino base layers from outdoor brands.
Knit & Cut
Fine rib knit with two-way stretch for a snug, flexible fit that moves with your body. Long sleeves and a scoop neckline keep the top discreet under most outerwear — ideal as a women's wool thermal shirt under blouses or knits.
Made In
Knitted, sewn, and finished in Germany. Most of Engel's production partners are within 30 km of the Pfullingen headquarters, which keeps the supply chain short and traceable.
Certifications
IVN BEST certified — the strictest organic textile standard available, covering organic fiber sourcing, processing, dyeing, finishing, and social welfare across the full chain. kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) certifies the wool comes from organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards.
Dyes
Free from heavy metals and harmful AZO dyes. Natural and undyed colorways retain the wool's original tone, which can vary subtly between batches — a normal characteristic of true natural fiber.

What this fabric actually does on your body

Temperature regulating
Merino wool insulates when it's cold and releases heat when you warm up — the same fiber works as a winter base layer and a summer travel shirt without overheating.
Moisture-wicking
Wool absorbs up to a third of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, pulling sweat away from skin so you stay dry during activity and don't get clammy when you stop.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool fibers naturally resist bacteria growth, which means the top stays fresh through multiple wears. Air it out between uses and wash much less often than a synthetic equivalent.
Soft against skin
At 19.5 microns, this is a fine merino — meaningfully softer than the coarse wool most people picture. The 30% silk further smooths the hand for a gentle next-to-skin feel.

Engel women's size chart

Engel uses European sizing brackets. Measure your chest at the fullest point and match to the chart below. The fine rib has stretch, so the fit is snug-but-flexible by design — that's what lets it disappear under outer layers.

EU Size US Equivalent Chest Measurement
34/36 XS (4–6) 31–32 in / 79–81 cm
38/40 S/M (8–10) 34–36 in / 86–91 cm
42/44 L (12–14) 38–40 in / 97–102 cm
46/48 XL (16–18) 42–44 in / 107–112 cm
Fit note
European sizing runs slightly slim. If you're between sizes, prefer a relaxed fit, or plan to layer it over another thin top, size up. If you want the closest base-layer fit for under fitted clothing, take your true size.

Who this top is right for — and who might want something else

A great fit if you…
…want a chemical-free women's merino wool base layer with traceable certifications, run cold and need a thin extra layer that won't add bulk, travel often and want a top you can wear several days between washes, are sensitive to synthetics, or have tried other merino base layers and want a finer, softer hand thanks to the silk content.
Worth knowing before you buy
A small percentage of people remain sensitive to wool even at fine micron counts. If you've reacted to merino in the past, the wool/silk blend is the gentlest entry point — but it isn't a guarantee. Engel's natural undyed colorways can vary slightly between production batches; this is a feature of authentic natural fiber, not a flaw.
The care commitment is real but simple
Wool requires hand washing or a wool/delicate cycle in cold water with wool-specific detergent — never hot water, never tumble dry. That sounds like a lot, but in practice you'll wash this top a fraction as often as a synthetic, so the total time spent on care is usually less.

How to wash and care for merino wool and silk

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash, or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Never wring — gently press water out, then lay flat on a towel to reshape and air dry away from direct heat. Between wears, simply hang the top to air out; wool's natural odor resistance means it usually doesn't need washing after every wear. Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth and wool wash. With this routine, an Engel merino wool base layer typically lasts many seasons and only gets softer with time.

Why care matters

Wool felts and shrinks irreversibly when exposed to hot water, agitation, or tumble drying. Following the routine above keeps the knit's stretch, shape, and softness intact — and protects the investment you've made in a piece designed to last.

Common questions about Engel merino wool base layers

Is this merino wool base layer itchy against the skin?
Most people find it noticeably soft. The merino is a fine 19.5 micron yarn — well below the threshold where most people perceive prickle — and the 30% silk content adds further smoothness. That said, a small percentage of people are sensitive to wool regardless of fineness. If you've reacted to wool before, this merino wool and silk base layer is the gentlest place to start.
Can I wear this in warm weather, or is it just for winter?
Year-round. Merino regulates temperature actively — it insulates in cold weather and releases heat in warm weather, while wicking moisture either way. Many customers wear this merino wool long sleeve top through summer travel, on long flights, and during transitional spring and fall weather, not just for winter base layering.
What does 190 GSM mean and how warm is this wool thermal shirt?
GSM stands for grams per square meter — a measure of fabric weight. At 190 GSM, this is a lightweight to mid-weight knit: warm enough to make a real difference as a winter base layer, but thin enough to wear discreetly under fitted clothing. For comparison, heavyweight merino base layers run 250 GSM and above, while ultralight summer merino tops are typically 140–160 GSM.
How often do I need to wash an Engel wool top?
Far less often than a synthetic or cotton equivalent. Wool naturally resists odor and bacteria, so most wearers air the top out between uses and wash only every several wears, or when visibly soiled. This is one of the practical reasons merino wool clothing is so popular for travel.
What is IVN BEST certification, and how is it different from GOTS?
Both are organic textile standards, but IVN BEST is stricter. It requires 100% organic natural fibers (no synthetic blends permitted), tighter limits on chemical inputs, and stronger ecological and social welfare requirements across the full production chain. Achieving IVN BEST is meaningfully harder than GOTS, and Engel chooses it because their entire process is built around it.
Where is the wool from, and what does kbT mean?
Engel sources fine merino fiber from organically farmed sheep, then knits and finishes the fabric in Germany. kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) certifies that the wool comes from organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards — no mulesing, no synthetic pesticide dips, and pasture access for the sheep.
Why is this more expensive than a synthetic wool thermal shirt or polyester base layer?
The price reflects the fiber (fine certified-organic merino and silk), the production location (Germany, with fair labor wages), the certifications (IVN BEST and kbT), and the construction (a fine rib knit built to last many seasons). With proper care, customers regularly report wearing the same Engel base layer for five-plus years — which usually works out cheaper per wear than replacing cheaper alternatives.
Can I wear this as women's wool thermal underwear under jeans or work pants?
Yes — this is a popular use. The 190 GSM rib knit is thin enough to layer under jeans, slacks, or work uniforms without adding visible bulk, and Engel makes a matching women's leggings and bottoms in the same fabric so you can build a full base-layer set if you want one.

    Thermal Undershirt

Published by Jennifer on Nov 9th 2024

Well made & warm! I purchased the Madder Red in medium, I probably could have ordered a small. I like it better than the 100% silk underwear I've had. Easy to wash & just air dry.
