Disana · Organic Merino Wool Leggings
A breathable merino wool base layer that grows with your child
100% GOTS-certified organic merino wool, knitted in a fine rib that stretches with active babies and toddlers. Made in Germany by Disana from mulesing-free Patagonian wool — warm in winter, breathable in summer, and gentle enough for sensitive skin.
About Disana
Heritage German wool craftsmanship
Disana is a family-run German company that has been making natural-fiber baby and children's clothing for more than 40 years. They are a founding member of the International Association of Natural Textiles (IVN) and hold both GOTS and IVN Best certifications — among the strictest organic textile standards in the world. Every stage of production, from knitting and sewing to quality control, takes place at Disana's own facility in southern Germany.
The merino wool used in these leggings comes from sheep raised in Patagonia, Argentina under strict animal welfare and land management standards, and is certified mulesing-free. The fleece is spun and dyed in Central Europe before being knitted into garments in Germany.
When to wear them
A year-round wool base layer
Merino wool is naturally temperature-regulating, which is why these leggings work across the seasons rather than as a winter-only piece. In cold weather they trap warm air close to the skin and wick moisture away; in milder weather the open rib knit breathes and helps the body shed heat. For most families they become a year-round staple worn under outerwear in winter, as standalone pants in spring and fall, and as breathable pajama bottoms in summer.
Three ways parents use them
As a base layer under cotton pants, snow pants, or a wool walker for winter outdoor time. As everyday leggings for crawling, walking, and play in shoulder seasons. As wool pajama bottoms over a cloth diaper or night fitted — the breathability and natural odor resistance make them an excellent overnight choice.
Materials & construction
Fine-rib merino, knitted in Germany
Fiber
100% organic merino wool. Mulesing-free. Soft enough for most babies' next-to-skin wear thanks to the fine merino micron count.

540 g/m² — midweight knit. Substantial enough for winter base layering, breathable enough for year-round wear.
Construction
Fine ribbed knit for natural four-way stretch. Soft elastic waistband stays in place without digging in. No synthetic elastane in the body of the knit.
Origin
Wool sourced in Patagonia, Argentina. Spun and dyed in Central Europe. Knitted, sewn, and finished in Germany.

Fully biodegradable once the soft elastic in the waistband is removed at end of life.
Why merino wool
What this fiber does that cotton and synthetics can't
Temperature regulating
Merino's crimped fibers trap air for warmth in cold weather and release heat in mild weather. Children stay comfortable across a wide temperature range without overheating.
Moisture wicking
Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, pulling sweat away from the skin so your child stays dry during active play.
Naturally odor resistant
The lanolin in untreated wool resists bacteria and odors, which means these leggings can be worn several times between washes — air them out and they're ready again.
Gentle on sensitive skin
Fine merino is meaningfully softer than coarse wool and is generally well tolerated by babies and children, including many with eczema or skin sensitivities.
Sizing
European sizing by height
Disana sizing is based on your child's height in centimeters, not weight. The leggings are designed to grow with your child — legs are cut long and can be cuffed and gradually uncuffed as your child grows taller.
| Size |
Age (approx.) |
Height |
| 50/56 |
0–3 months |
50–56 cm / 19.5–22 in |
| 62/68 |

62–68 cm / 24–27 in |
| 74/80 |
6–12 months |
74–80 cm / 29–31.5 in |
| 86/92 |
12–24 months |
86–92 cm / 33–36 in |

98–104 cm / 38–41 in |
| 110/116 |
5–6 years |
110–116 cm / 43–45.5 in |
Sizing note
European sizing runs slightly slim. If your child is at the upper end of a height range, or tall for their age, size up — the longer leg can simply be cuffed until they grow into it.
Honest assessment
What to expect — the good and the trade-offs
Who these work well for
Parents wanting a true natural-fiber base layer for babies and toddlers, families managing eczema or skin sensitivities, cloth diapering families looking for wool pajama bottoms, and anyone who wants a single piece that works year-round across temperature swings.
Trade-offs to know about
These are a midweight knit, not a heavyweight thermal — for sub-freezing outdoor play, layer them under wool fleece pants or boiled wool outerwear. They are knitted leggings, not woven pants, so they will eventually thin at the knees with heavy crawling and play. A small percentage of children are sensitive to wool even at fine merino micron counts.
Care commitment
Wool is not throw-in-the-machine clothing. These require cool water, wool wash, and lay-flat drying. The trade-off is that they need washing far less often than cotton — most parents wash every 2–4 wears and air out between. Once the routine is learned, it takes minutes.
Care
How to wash your Disana wool leggings
Hand wash or wool cycle Cool water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener
Hand wash in cool water — never hot, and never alternating temperatures, which shocks wool fibers and causes felting. Use a wool-specific detergent such as Eucalan, Sonett, or Disana's own wool wash. Avoid rubbing, wringing, or soaking longer than about 10 minutes. Gently press water out, roll in a towel to absorb excess moisture, then lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct sunlight and heat. A wool/delicate machine cycle on cool with no spin is also safe if your machine has a true wool program.
Wool's self-cleaning properties mean these leggings rarely need full washing — airing them out between wears refreshes them naturally. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and a dab of wool wash. With proper care, Disana pieces routinely last through multiple children.
A note on wool felting
Hot water, agitation, and tumble drying will felt and shrink untreated wool — there is no recovering a felted garment. Stick to cool water, gentle handling, and flat drying and these leggings will hold their shape and size for years.
Frequently asked questions
Parent questions, honestly answered
Will the wool be itchy on my baby?
Fine merino wool is meaningfully different from the coarse wool many adults remember from childhood sweaters. Disana uses fine merino that most babies and sensitive-skinned children tolerate well, including many with eczema. A small percentage of children are still sensitive to wool — if your child has reacted to wool before, a wool/silk blend (such as Engel's wool/silk base layers) is the gentlest first option.
Can these be worn directly against the skin?
Yes — these are designed as a base layer and are soft enough for next-to-skin wear for most children. They can also be worn over a thin cotton layer if you prefer or if your child is in the small group sensitive to wool.
Are these warm enough for winter outdoor play?
As a base layer, yes — they are excellent under snow pants or boiled wool outerwear. As standalone pants in freezing temperatures, layer them under a heavier pair (such as Disana boiled wool pantaloons or wool fleece pants) for proper cold-weather protection.
Can I machine wash them?
Only if your machine has a true wool or hand-wash cycle with cool water and minimal agitation. Hand washing is safer and surprisingly quick once it's part of your routine. Never use a regular cycle, hot water, or tumble drying — these will felt the wool and shrink the garment permanently.
How often do they need to be washed?
Far less often than cotton. Wool is naturally odor-resistant and self-cleaning — most parents wash every 2 to 4 wears, with airing in between. Spot-clean small spills as they happen and reserve full washes for genuine soiling.
Do they work as a cloth diaper cover?
Partially. As a single-layer knit they offer some moisture resistance and absorbency thanks to the wool's natural lanolin, but they are not a true diaper cover like Disana's two-layer wool pull-on soaker. They work very well as overnight pajama bottoms over a fitted or absorbent night diaper, but for daytime cover use we recommend a dedicated wool cover.
What size should I order?
Measure your child's height in centimeters and choose the range it falls within. If your child is at the upper end of a range or tall for their age, size up — the longer legs can be cuffed and let down as they grow.
Why is wool clothing more expensive than cotton?
Organic merino wool is a more expensive fiber to source, process, and certify than cotton, and Disana's full-production-in-Germany model adds further cost. The value comes through over time — a single pair of Disana leggings often lasts through multiple children, regulates temperature across seasons, and rarely needs washing.
