Description

Disana · Boiled Merino Wool Winter Hat

The no-more-cold-ears winter hat for babies and kids

Made in Germany from 100% boiled organic merino wool with a soft organic cotton lining, this thick 420 gsm hat has ear flaps and chin ties that stay put through every snow fort, sled run, and stroller nap. Naturally wind-resistant, water-repellent, and warm enough for the coldest days of winter.

A heritage German wool maker

Disana has been making children's clothing from pure organic wool in southern Germany for decades, and is one of the most respected names in European natural-fiber baby clothing. The yarn for this hat is sourced from certified organic merino sheep (kbT — meaning controlled biological animal husbandry, with strict animal welfare standards), spun in Europe, and knit and felted in Disana's own facilities in Germany. The entire piece — outer wool, cotton lining, and dyes — is GOTS certified.

A true winter hat — not a shoulder-season knit

This is the thick, structured hat you reach for when temperatures drop and the wind picks up. The dense 420 gsm boiled wool blocks wind and sheds light snow, the low cut covers cheeks and ears completely, and the chin ties keep it on the heads of toddlers who would rather be hatless. Most families pair a lighter knit hat for shoulder seasons with this boiled wool hat for the coldest days — think December through February in cold climates, or anytime the wind is biting.

Best paired with
A Disana boiled wool jacket or walker overall for full wind-and-snow protection, or layered over a merino balaclava on the coldest days. For dry cold without much wind, a knit wool hat may be enough — save the boiled wool for when the weather turns serious.

Boiled wool outside, organic cotton inside

Outer shell — 100% organic boiled merino wool
Knitted merino wool that has been washed in hot water and gently agitated so the fibers felt together, creating a dense, structured fabric. The result is naturally wind-blocking, water-repellent, and warm even when damp. Weight: 420 g/m² (gsm) — substantial enough for serious winter wear.
Inner lining — soft organic cotton jersey
A fine organic cotton jersey lines the inside of the hat so it sits softly against your child's forehead, ears, and cheeks. The cotton lining is the reason this hat works for babies and children with sensitive skin who haven't worn wool before — the wool warms from outside, while cotton handles next-to-skin contact.
Certifications
GOTS certified (Global Organic Textile Standard — covers organic fiber farming and the entire processing chain including dyes and finishes). Wool is kbT — controlled biological animal husbandry with strict organic and animal welfare standards. Free from chemical dyes, synthetic finishes, and harsh treatments.
Country of manufacture
Wool sourced from certified organic merino sheep in Argentina, spun in Europe, and knit, boiled, cut, and sewn in Germany by Disana.

Built for real winter days

Wind- and weather-resistant
The dense felted structure of boiled wool blocks wind and repels light snow and rain. Wool retains its insulating warmth even when damp — unlike cotton, which gets cold once wet.
Stays on with chin ties
Two soft ties fasten under the chin, so the hat doesn't end up in the snow halfway through a walk. The low cut covers ears and cheeks for full cold-weather coverage.
Temperature-regulating
Merino wool naturally regulates body temperature and wicks moisture, so your child stays warm without overheating — even when they go from outdoor play to a warm car or shop.
Cotton-lined for sensitive skin
The organic cotton jersey lining means even children new to wool, or with sensitive scalps, can wear this hat without the typical wool-on-skin question mark.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool resists bacteria and odor, so the hat rarely needs full washing — airing it out between wears is usually enough. Less laundry, longer life.
Made to last and pass down
Heritage German construction, structured boiled wool that holds its shape, and durable stitching mean this hat is built to be handed down between children rather than replaced each winter.

Measure your child's head — it's more reliable than age

Disana hats are sized by head circumference. To measure, wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your child's head, just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead. Match the centimeter measurement to the size below. European sizing runs slightly slim — if your child is at the upper end of a range, size up.

Size Approximate age Head circumference
Size 1 4–12 months 42–46 cm (16.5–18 in)
Size 2 1–3 years 46–50 cm (18–19.5 in)
Size 3 3–6 years 50–54 cm (19.5–21.25 in)
Fit guidance
A close fit keeps cold air from reaching ears and cheeks — this is the point of the design. If you size up for longer wear, expect a little gapping at the ear flaps and face until your child grows into it.

Who this hat is — and isn't — for

It's perfect for
Cold, windy winters where you need real protection rather than just a knit beanie. Babies and toddlers with sensitive skin who haven't worn wool before — the cotton lining makes the introduction gentle. Families who want one excellent winter hat that lasts several years and can be passed down to siblings.
It may not be the right hat if
You live somewhere with mild winters where a 420 gsm boiled wool hat will run too warm — a lighter knit merino hat is a better year-round choice. It's also not waterproof; boiled wool handles snow and light rain well, but heavy downpours need a separate waterproof shell.
On wool itch
Fine merino — the kind Disana uses — is meaningfully different from coarse wool. With the additional organic cotton lining sitting against the head, even children sensitive to wool typically wear this hat comfortably. If your child has had strong reactions to wool in the past, start with the cotton-lined wool against the head and watch for any redness over the first few wears.
Care commitment
Wool needs more care than cotton, but in practice this hat rarely needs washing — wool's natural odor and dirt resistance means airing it out is usually enough. When it does need a wash, hand wash in cool water with wool wash and lay flat to dry. Never machine wash on a warm or hot cycle, and never tumble dry — heat and agitation will felt and shrink the wool.

How to care for boiled wool

Hand wash or wool cycle Cool water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach

Boiled wool rarely needs full washing — most surface dirt brushes off once dry, and minor spots can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Wool's natural lanolin keeps it dirt- and odor-resistant, so airing the hat out between wears is often enough to refresh it. When a wash is needed, hand wash gently in cool water with a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan or Sonett wool wash are good choices), or use the wool/delicate cycle on cool. Press water out with a towel — never wring or twist. Lay flat to dry away from direct heat and reshape gently while damp. Heat, agitation, and tumble drying will felt and shrink wool permanently, so skip them.

Questions parents ask about this hat

Is boiled wool itchy on a baby's skin?
Not in this hat — the organic cotton jersey lining sits between the wool and your child's skin, so the boiled wool stays on the outside doing the warmth-and-wind job while cotton handles the contact. Disana also uses fine merino wool, which is much softer than the coarse wool many people associate with itch.
Is the hat waterproof?
Water-resistant, not fully waterproof. Boiled wool's dense felted structure sheds light snow and light rain very well, and wool insulates even when damp — but heavy or sustained rain will eventually soak through. For wet weather, pair with a waterproof shell or save the hat for dry cold.
How warm is 420 gsm boiled wool?
Substantial. 420 g/m² is the heaviest weight Disana offers, comparable to a winter coat fabric, and the boiled-felted structure traps air for additional insulation. This is a hat for genuinely cold weather — well below freezing, windy days, and outdoor play. In mild winter climates it may run warm; a knit wool hat is a better all-rounder for milder cold.
What size should I order?
Measure your child's head circumference around the widest part, just above the ears and across the forehead, and match it to the size chart. If your child is between sizes or at the top of a range, size up — the hat will still fit snugly enough at the ears, and you'll get more seasons out of it. The age ranges are approximations; head measurement is more reliable.
Where is this hat made?
The wool comes from certified organic merino sheep in Argentina, is spun in Europe, and is knit, felted (boiled), cut, and sewn in Disana's own facilities in Germany. The entire production chain — fiber, spinning, knitting, boiling, dyeing, and sewing — is GOTS certified.
How often should I wash it?
As rarely as possible — wool is naturally odor- and dirt-resistant, and frequent washing shortens its life. Air the hat out between wears, brush off surface dirt once dry, and spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth. A full hand wash is only needed a few times a season for most families.
Can it be passed down to younger siblings?
Yes — this is one of the design strengths. Disana boiled wool holds its shape and structure for years with proper care, and the natural fibers don't pill or thin the way synthetics do. Many families use a single hat through two or three children.
