Engel · Organic Merino Wool Fleece Baby Mittens

Thumbless Wool Fleece Baby Mittens with String

Soft, plush 100% organic merino wool fleece mittens from Engel — knit and finished in Germany at the heritage Pfullingen mill. Thumbless construction slips on easily, the connecting string keeps pairs together, and the natural fleece keeps little hands warm even when damp.

Made by Engel — German organic wool since 1927

Engel Naturtextilien is a family-run German maker founded in 1927 and based in Pfullingen, in the south of Baden-Württemberg. They have specialized in untreated organic wool and silk garments for nearly a century and are one of the most respected natural-fiber brands in Europe. Engel was among the first textile companies in Germany to earn the IVN Best certification — currently the strictest organic textile standard in the world — and every garment is made under fair, ethical working conditions in or near their own facility.

These mittens are made from Engel's signature wool fleece: 100% organic virgin merino wool that's knitted and then brushed on both sides to a soft, plush pile. The wool comes from mulesing-free merino sheep raised organically in Argentina, then spun, knit, and finished in Germany.

Cool-weather and winter wear, newborn through about 18 months

Wool fleece is one of the warmest natural fabrics for its weight, which makes these mittens a versatile cool-weather option. They're warm enough for stroller walks, cold-weather babywearing, and crisp fall and winter outings, while still breathable enough that little hands won't overheat indoors or in mild conditions. Because merino wool retains its insulating properties even when slightly damp, they're a smart choice for infants and toddlers who frequently put their hands in their mouths or grab snowy surfaces.

Best for
Daily fall and winter wear, stroller walks, babywearing in cold weather, sleeping car seats in chilly weather, and as a no-scratch mitten for newborns. For deep snow play with active toddlers, layering with a waterproof shell mitten gives the best combination of warmth and weatherproofing.

100% organic merino wool fleece, knit and finished in Germany

Fiber
100% organic virgin merino wool, mulesing-free. Fiber sourced from organically raised merino sheep in Argentina; spun, knit, and finished in Germany by Engel.
Fabric weight
Approximately 280 g/m² — a substantial mid-to-heavyweight wool fleece. Plush and warm without being stiff or bulky on small hands.
Construction
Knitted, then brushed on both sides to a soft, fluffy pile. The textured surface traps tiny air pockets that retain warmth while still allowing air exchange — the same principle as synthetic fleece, but made entirely from wool.
Design
Thumbless mitten with a long, gentle wrist cuff and an attached connecting string that threads through coat or jacket sleeves to keep pairs together.
Certifications
IVN Best (the strictest organic textile standard in the world) and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Dyes are free from heavy metals and AZO compounds.
Country of manufacture
Made in Germany by Engel Naturtextilien — knit and finished in their own facility in Pfullingen.

Four reasons these mittens earn their place in the bag

Warm even when damp
Unlike cotton, merino wool retains its insulating properties when wet. Hands stay warm if the mittens get drooled on, brushed against snow, or caught in light rain.
Naturally temperature-regulating
Merino wool's fine micron count (around 17–19 microns) and crimped fiber structure adjust to body heat — warm in cold weather, breathable enough not to overheat indoors.
Thumbless and easy to put on
No fiddling with tiny thumbs. The thumbless design slips over wiggly newborn and infant hands in seconds — practical when you're already juggling a coat, hat, and stroller.
Connecting string keeps pairs together
Thread the soft string through the sleeves of your child's coat — even if a mitten is pulled off, it stays attached. No more single mittens lost on the way home.

One size, fits newborn through approximately 18 months

Engel produces these wool fleece mittens in a single size designed to fit infants from newborn through about 18 months. The thumbless cut and stretchy knit accommodate growth, and the long wrist cuff can be folded down for newborns or worn at full length as your baby grows.

Size Approx. age Fit notes
One size Newborn – 18 months Long cuff folds down for newborns; worn at full length on older infants and toddlers.
European sizing note
European baby sizing tends to run slightly slim. Most parents find these mittens fit well across the full age range, but if your child has notably long or wide hands at 12 months and up, you may want to size up to Engel's toddler-size mittens (sold separately).

What we tell parents before they buy

Who these work especially well for
Babies and infants in cool to cold climates. Parents who babywear in winter. Newborns who need a no-scratch mitten that's also warm. Anyone replacing synthetic fleece mittens with a natural-fiber alternative. Gift buyers — these are a beautiful, lasting gift that's often passed between siblings.
A few honest trade-offs
Wool fleece is naturally water-repellent but not waterproof — for prolonged wet snow play with active toddlers, layer a waterproof shell mitten over the top. A small amount of initial pilling on the brushed surface is normal and reflects how the fabric is finished; it settles down after the first few wears. These are also a one-size product, so they're not suited to children much beyond about 18 months — Reiff and Disana offer larger toddler and kid sizes for older children.
A note on wool sensitivity
Engel's merino fiber is fine (around 17–19 microns) and brushed to a soft fleece — it's significantly softer than the coarse wool many people remember from older sweaters. Most babies, including those with sensitive skin or mild eczema, tolerate it well. If your child has had a confirmed reaction to wool in the past, Engel's wool/silk blend pieces are an even gentler starting point.

Hand wash gently — and wash less often than you think

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring or twist. Lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat. Wool naturally resists odor and dirt and rarely needs frequent washing — airing between wears is often enough. With proper care, these mittens last for years and are commonly passed between siblings.

A word on wool care failures

Hot water, agitation, and tumble drying will felt and shrink wool — there's no recovery once it happens. The good news: cold water plus wool wash plus flat drying is a simple routine that becomes second nature after the first wash.

Frequently asked questions

Are these mittens itchy?
No — Engel uses fine merino wool (around 17–19 microns) brushed to a soft fleece, which feels plush rather than scratchy. Coarse wool from older sweaters and traditional outerwear is what most people associate with itchiness, and this is a meaningfully different fabric. Most babies and sensitive-skinned infants tolerate it well.
What does 280 g/m² actually mean?
It's the fabric weight — grams per square meter. At approximately 280 g/m², Engel's wool fleece sits in the mid-to-heavyweight range, which makes it warm enough for genuine winter use without being stiff or bulky on small hands.
Are they waterproof for snow play?
Wool fleece is naturally water-repellent — light snow and moisture bead off rather than soaking in, and even when damp, wool stays warm. For prolonged wet snow play with active toddlers, we recommend layering a waterproof shell mitten over the top for the best combination of warmth and weatherproofing.
What's the difference between IVN Best and GOTS?
Both are organic textile certifications, but IVN Best is significantly stricter. GOTS requires a minimum of 70% certified organic fiber and allows certain processing chemicals; IVN Best requires 100% certified organic fiber and has tighter limits on dyes, finishes, and processing aids. These mittens carry both certifications.
What does kbT mean?
kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) is the German standard for "controlled organic animal husbandry." It means the wool comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards, no pesticides on pastures or animals, and mulesing-free practices.
Will they fit my newborn? My one-year-old?
Yes — these are designed as a one-size mitten that fits from newborn through approximately 18 months. The long wrist cuff folds down for newborns and small infants, and unfolds to give older babies and toddlers more coverage at the wrist.
How often do I need to wash them?
Less often than you'd expect. Wool is naturally odor-resistant and dirt-repellent, so most spots can be air-aired out or spot-cleaned. A full hand wash every few weeks during regular use is typically plenty. Over-washing is one of the main causes of wool wear and felting.
