Engel Kids Sleeveless Thermal Undershirt — Merino Wool and Silk Base Layer

A fine-rib wool/silk tank top from Engel that doubles as a thermal base layer, a pajama top, or a ski and sport under-layer. The 70/30 blend brings together merino's temperature regulation and silk's gentle hand — making this one of the softest natural-fiber base layers available for kids with sensitive skin.

Engel Natur — German organic wool since 1927

Engel is a family-run German textile manufacturer that has been producing natural fiber clothing for nearly a century. They are founding members of the International Association for Natural Textiles (IVN) and one of the most respected names in organic wool apparel in Europe. Roughly 95% of Engel's range carries either GOTS or IVN BEST certification — two of the world's strictest organic textile standards.

All Engel garments are knit, dyed, and sewn in Germany — most in Engel's own workshop in Pfullingen, the rest with partner workshops within 50 km. The merino wool comes from controlled organic livestock farming (kbT) where pesticides and mulesing are forbidden and shearing must be stress-free. The silk is mulberry silk, the finest grade. No chemical finishing is used, and all dyes are heavy-metal-free and AZO-dye-free.

A versatile year-round base layer for active kids

The sleeveless cut and snug fit make this tank one of the most flexible pieces in a child's natural-fiber wardrobe. It works in three main modes:

Cold weather
Thermal base layer
Worn directly against the skin under shirts, sweaters, ski jackets, or snowsuits. The fine rib knit adds meaningful warmth without bulk, and the wool actively wicks sweat away during high-activity outdoor play. Pair with long-sleeve merino tops and wool tights or leggings for layered cold-weather warmth.
Nighttime
Pajama top
Worn alone as a sleep top. Merino wool's temperature-regulating properties help children stay comfortable through the night — warm when they kick covers off, cool when they pile blankets on. The natural fibers also help prevent night sweats and the wake-ups that come with them.
Mild weather
Everyday tank
Worn on its own in warmer months. Wool/silk has a cool hand and natural breathability, plus wool's natural UV protection (factor 22 to 50 depending on color). The silk content gives the fabric a subtle sheen that elevates it beyond a plain undershirt.
Especially good for sensitive or eczema-prone skin
The 30% silk content is what makes this tank meaningfully different from a 100% merino base layer. Silk softens the hand and adds a slight cool sheen, making the fabric noticeably gentler against skin while keeping wool's temperature regulation and moisture-wicking. For children who have reacted to coarser wool — or to synthetic athletic fabrics — this is usually the most tolerated natural-fiber base layer.

70% organic merino wool / 30% mulberry silk, 190 GSM fine rib knit

Engel's signature wool/silk fabric is a fine rib knit weighing approximately 190 grams per square meter — light enough to wear comfortably under fitted clothing, substantial enough to deliver real warmth. The rib knit creates a slight stretch that hugs the body without restricting movement, which is why this style works equally well for sport, sleep, and everyday wear.

Fiber blend
70% organic virgin merino wool (kbT — controlled organic animal husbandry) plus 30% mulberry silk, the finest grade of silk. Fine merino fiber diameter approximately 17 to 19 microns. Mulesing-free wool.
Construction
Fine rib knit, approximately 190 GSM. Lightweight and stretchy with a smooth hand. Snug fitted cut designed to layer cleanly under other clothing.
Origin
Knit, dyed, and sewn in Germany at Engel's Pfullingen manufactory and partner workshops within 50 km of the facility.
Certifications
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. Dyes are heavy-metal-free and AZO-dye-free. No chemical finishing or smoothing agents. All trims and findings are nickel-free.

Key features of the wool/silk base layer tank

Temperature regulating
Merino wool keeps kids warm when it's cold and cool when active. Wool fiber actively releases excess heat as body temperature rises — so children don't overheat during sport or wake up sweaty at night.
Moisture-wicking, warm when wet
Merino can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, and retains its insulation even when wet. This is the property that makes wool/silk superior to synthetic base layers for skiing, sledding, and snow play.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool's surface structure resists the bacteria that cause odor. Kids can wear this tank for multiple days between washes, and airing it overnight is often enough to refresh it — a real advantage for travel and ski trips.
Silk-softened hand
The 30% mulberry silk content makes the fabric noticeably gentler than pure merino — softer, smoother, with a slight cool sheen. This is the most-tolerated wool blend for children with sensitive skin or wool sensitivities.
Natural UV protection
Engel's wool fabrics have been tested under DIN EN 13758-1 to provide UV protection factor of approximately 22 to 50, depending on color and density. A meaningful benefit for spring and summer outdoor wear.
No chemical finishing
No fire retardants, no smoothing agents, no AZO dyes, no chemical softeners — and no need to wash before first wear. The fabric softens further with each subsequent wash.

European size chart — by height in centimeters

European sizing is based on your child's full height, not weight or US age categories. Measure your child standing against a wall (in socks or bare feet) and choose the size band that includes their height. This tank is cut for a snug, layering-friendly fit — true to size for most children.

EU size (height) Height (inches) Approximate age
92 cm 36 in 2–3 years
104 cm 41 in 3–4 years
116 cm 46 in 5–6 years
128 cm 50.5 in 7–8 years
140 cm 55 in 9–10 years
152 cm 60 in 11–12 years
164 cm 64.5 in 13–14 years
176 cm 69 in 15–16 years
A note on Engel sizing for base layers
European sizing runs slightly slim compared to US standards, and base-layer tanks are intentionally cut snug to layer cleanly under other clothing. If your child is at the upper end of an age range, tall for their age, or you'd prefer a roomier fit for sleep, size up by one band.

Is this base layer right for your child?

Works well for
Children whose parents want a true natural-fiber alternative to synthetic athletic base layers. Active kids who play outdoors in cold weather — skiing, sledding, hiking, winter sport. Kids with sensitive skin, eczema, or who run hot and wake up sweaty in synthetic pajamas. Families building a versatile cold-weather wardrobe where the same piece can serve as base layer, pajamas, and warm-weather tank. Gift buyers looking for a single piece a child will actually wear regularly.
Trade-offs to be aware of
Wool/silk requires gentle care — hand wash or wool cycle in cold water, lay flat to dry. Hot water and tumble drying will felt and shrink the garment permanently. Some children experience a brief break-in period during the first few wears as their skin adjusts to wool fibers — if there's mild itch initially, the fabric will soften further with washing and wear. A small percentage of children remain sensitive to wool at any fiber count; the wool/silk blend is the gentlest option but is not universally tolerated.
Wool/silk vs. pure merino — which to choose
Pure merino base layers offer the same temperature regulation at a slightly lower price. Wool/silk costs more (silk is significantly more expensive to produce than wool) but feels meaningfully softer next-to-skin and has a more refined finish. For first-time wool wearers, very sensitive skin, or as a pajama top worn alone, wool/silk is worth the difference. For pure utility under thicker outer layers, pure merino is fine.

How to care for your Engel wool/silk tank

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool-specific detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener Air between wears

Hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan, Sonett wool wash, or similar), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Do not rub. Rinse with plenty of water at the same temperature as the wash water — sudden temperature changes can cause shrinkage. Wrap the tank in a clean towel, gently squeeze (never wring), and stretch back to shape. Air dry flat away from direct heat.

Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing. Most parents air the tank overnight between wears and wash it every one to two weeks, or sooner if there's visible soiling. Spot cleaning with a damp cloth handles most small marks. The garment does not need to be washed before first use — Engel uses no harmful chemicals in manufacturing.

If your child experiences initial itch

The fibers in this tank are not treated with any smoothing agents and will get softer with each wear and wash. If your child finds the first wear scratchy, you can lanolize the garment or wash it with a wool softener — and the fabric will improve substantially after the first two or three washes.

Common questions about kids' wool/silk base layers

Is wool/silk itchy on kids?
For most children, no. Engel uses fine merino wool at approximately 17 to 19 microns — far softer than the coarse wool many adults remember from childhood — and the 30% silk content adds a noticeable softness on top of that. A small percentage of children experience a brief break-in period during the first few wears; the fabric softens with each wash and wear. If your child has reacted strongly to wool in the past, the wool/silk blend is the gentlest natural option and is more likely to be tolerated than pure merino.
Can this tank be worn as pajamas?
Yes — many families use it specifically for sleep. Wool regulates temperature actively, which helps prevent night sweats and the wake-ups that come with them. The tank can be worn alone or paired with wool or wool/silk leggings for a complete pajama set.
Why wool/silk for skiing instead of a synthetic base layer?
Three reasons. First, wool remains warm even when wet — synthetic base layers lose insulation when saturated with sweat. Second, wool wicks moisture without holding odor, so the tank can be worn for multiple ski days between washes. Third, wool/silk feels gentler on skin than the polyester or polypropylene blends used in most kids' technical base layers, which matters for sensitive skin and long days on the mountain.
What does GOTS certification mean?
GOTS is the Global Organic Textile Standard — the leading worldwide standard for organic textiles. It covers both organic fiber farming (in this case, kbT-certified organic merino wool from sheep raised without pesticides or mulesing) and the entire processing chain including dyes, finishes, and labor practices. GOTS certification is independently audited each year.
What size should I order?
Engel sizing is based on European height in centimeters. Measure your child's full height and choose the size band that includes that measurement. This tank is cut snug for layering — if you want a roomier fit for pajama wear, or if your child is tall for their age, size up by one band.
How often does this need to be washed?
Less often than synthetic or cotton base layers. Wool fiber is naturally odor-resistant and self-cleans through exposure to fresh air. Most parents air the tank overnight between wears and full-wash it every one to two weeks. For active or sweaty wear (ski day, sports), wash sooner.
Will this tank shrink?
Only if washed incorrectly. Wool shrinks and felts when exposed to hot water plus agitation plus heat (tumble drying). Following the cold-water wool wash and lay-flat-to-dry routine, the tank holds its shape and size for years.
Is the wool sourced humanely?
Yes. Engel sources from controlled organic livestock farming (kbT in German), which forbids mulesing, requires stress-free shearing, and prohibits pesticide use on animals or pastures. The standard is one of the strictest in the wool industry.
