Engel · Men's Merino Wool & Silk Base Layer

Engel Men's Merino Wool & Silk Boxer Briefs — Lightweight Thermal Underwear, Made in Germany

A fine-knit 70% organic merino wool / 30% mulberry silk boxer brief from Engel, Germany's heritage natural-fiber maker since 1927. Naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and IVN BEST certified — soft enough to wear next to skin, light enough to wear all year.

Engel Natur — nearly a century of organic merino wool from Germany

Engel has been making natural-fiber clothing in Pfullingen, southern Germany since 1927, and remains a family-run business. Their organic merino wool comes from sheep raised in their natural environment under kbT (controlled biological animal husbandry) standards, with no mulesing and no pesticides used on pastures or animals. Knitting, dyeing, and sewing all happen in Germany within roughly 50 km of the Engel manufactory.

Around 95% of Engel's range is certified to either GOTS or IVN BEST — the latter being the most rigorous textile standard available, requiring 100% organic natural fibers, no harmful AZO dyes, and no heavy metals anywhere in the production chain. These boxer briefs carry the IVN BEST seal.

A true year-round base layer

Most men buy their first pair of merino wool boxer briefs for winter — under jeans on cold commutes, under ski pants on the mountain, under work pants on long outdoor shifts — and then keep wearing them straight through summer because the merino-silk blend actively regulates temperature rather than just trapping heat. The same fabric that keeps you warm in 20°F weather keeps you cool and dry in 80°F weather, because wool moves moisture vapor away from skin before it can turn into clammy sweat.

Use them as: cold-weather thermal underwear, hiking and travel base layer, sleep underwear, everyday underwear if you sweat easily or have sensitive skin, or a synthetic-free alternative for anyone trying to remove polyester from next-to-skin layers.

What this fabric actually does

Temperature-regulating
Merino wool warms in cold weather and cools in heat by responding to your body's actual temperature. It's not just "warm" — it adapts. Engel's own DIN-tested data also shows wool/silk delivers a natural UV protection factor of 22 to 50 depending on color.
Moisture-wicking
Wool fibers absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture vapor before feeling damp, then release it back to the air. Result: no clammy synthetic feel, no soaked waistband after a hike or a long meeting.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool's structure resists the bacteria that cause odor. You can wear these multiple days, air them overnight, and they stay fresh — no antimicrobial treatments or silver-ion chemistry needed.
Soft, with no itch
Engel uses fine merino fibers (well under 19 microns), and the 30% mulberry silk content adds a smooth, almost glassy hand-feel. Even men who've reacted to coarse wool in the past usually find this blend comfortable directly against skin.

Size chart

Engel uses standard European men's sizing. Choose by your usual waist measurement.

EcoAble Size EU Size Waist (inches) Waist (cm)
Small – Medium EU 46–48 30–32" 76–82 cm
Medium – Large EU 50–52 33–35" 84–90 cm
Large – XLarge EU 54–56 36–39" 92–99 cm
Sizing tip
European cuts run slightly trim. If you're between sizes, prefer the larger one — the rib knit hugs the body, so a snug fit is built in. If you're at the upper end of a waist range, size up.

Is this right for you?

Best for
Men who want to remove synthetics from next-to-skin layers; cold-weather commuters and outdoor workers; skiers, hikers, and travelers; anyone with sensitive skin, eczema, or recurring odor issues from polyester underwear; men who run hot at night and want a breathable sleep layer.
Trade-offs to know
These cost more than conventional cotton or synthetic underwear. The value comes from longevity (a well-cared-for pair lasts years), how rarely you need to wash them, and the comfort of natural fibers next to skin. They are not machine-tumble friendly — if you forget and put them in a hot dryer, they will felt and shrink. Care is simple once you learn it.
A note on wool itch
Coarse wool itches; fine merino does not. Engel uses fine-micron merino, and the silk content makes this particular blend the gentlest wool option in their lineup. If you've reacted to wool sweaters in the past, this fabric is meaningfully different.

How to wash wool/silk underwear

Hand wash or wool cycle Cool water only Wool detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No wringing

Wool is naturally self-cleaning — airing your boxer briefs overnight is often enough between wears. When they do need washing, hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring or rub. Lay flat on a towel, roll to remove excess moisture, then lay flat to dry away from direct heat. With this routine a pair lasts for years.

Important

Wool felts and shrinks if washed in hot water or tumble dried. The damage is permanent. If a household member does laundry without knowing this, mark wool pieces clearly or wash them yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is merino wool underwear actually comfortable to wear all day?
Yes — for most men, more comfortable than cotton or synthetic. The fine-micron merino does not itch, the silk content makes the surface smooth and almost cool to first touch, and the rib knit moves with your body. The fabric also pulls moisture away from skin, so you don't get the warm-damp feeling that synthetic underwear traps under jeans or work pants.
Won't wool make me too hot in summer?
No. Wool is temperature-regulating, not just insulating. In hot weather it moves moisture vapor away from skin and lets it evaporate, which actively cools you. Engel's own testing shows wool/silk has a natural UV protection factor of 22 to 50, which is partly why it's used as warm-weather clothing in traditional cultures across the Mediterranean and Middle East. In practice these boxer briefs feel cool and dry in summer and warm and dry in winter.
How often do I need to wash them?
Far less often than cotton underwear. Wool resists odor naturally, so airing them out overnight between wears is usually enough. Many owners wash them after every two or three wears rather than every wear. Wash when they're visibly soiled or you've sweat heavily; otherwise air them and re-wear.
What does IVN BEST certification actually mean?
IVN BEST (Internationaler Verband der Naturtextilwirtschaft) is the strictest natural textile standard in the world. It requires 100% organic natural fibers, prohibits all harmful AZO dyes and heavy metals, and enforces strict social and environmental criteria across the entire production chain. It exceeds even the well-known GOTS standard. When a garment carries the IVN BEST seal, every step from sheep to seam has been independently audited.
What is kbT and is the wool mulesing-free?
kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) means the wool comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards — no pesticides on pastures or animals, sheep raised in their natural environment, and no mulesing. Engel publishes its full position on mulesing on its website and refuses to source wool from farms that practice it.
Why are these more expensive than regular underwear?
Three reasons: the fiber (organic kbT merino and mulberry silk are among the costlier natural fibers), the construction (knit, dyed, and sewn in Germany at IVN BEST standards rather than mass-produced offshore), and the longevity. A pair worn through proper care typically lasts several years, washed less often than cotton underwear, with no microplastic shedding into the water supply.
Will wool boxer briefs shrink?
Only if you wash them in hot water or put them in a tumble dryer. Hand wash or wool-cycle in cool water, lay flat to dry, and they will hold their shape and size. The damage from a single hot wash is permanent — this is the one care rule that matters most.
Are these good for sensitive skin or eczema?
For many people, yes — significantly better than synthetic underwear. The wool/silk blend is breathable, free of harmful dyes and heavy metals, and the natural fibers do not trap heat and moisture against skin the way polyester does. If you've reacted specifically to wool before, the silk-blended Engel pieces are the gentlest entry point. As with any clothing, individual sensitivity varies.
