Engel · Men's Merino Wool & Silk Base Layer

Engel Men's Thermal Base Layer Top with Extended Back

A 190 gsm long-sleeve undershirt in 70% organic merino wool and 30% silk, knitted in Germany by Engel. The slightly longer back keeps the shirt tucked in through bending, reaching, and layering, while the fine rib knit delivers temperature-regulating warmth without bulk.

A century of German wool craftsmanship

Engel has been knitting merino wool, wool/silk, and organic cotton base layers in Germany since 1927. Their fabrics are GOTS-certified organic, IVN BEST certified, and made from kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) wool — meaning the merino comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards. For nearly a century, Engel has been the benchmark European brand for next-to-skin natural fiber clothing, and their men's thermal range is the result of that heritage applied to a modern wardrobe.

A genuine year-round base layer

At 190 gsm, this is a thin, lightweight knit — heavy enough to add real warmth as a winter base layer under flannel, fleece, or a wool sweater, but breathable enough to wear on its own as an undershirt in milder weather. Merino wool actively regulates temperature: it traps warm air against the skin when it's cold, and wicks moisture away to cool you when you heat up.

Common uses our customers describe:

  • Winter base layer for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and cold-weather work
  • Everyday undershirt under button-downs, sweaters, and suit jackets
  • Travel layer that stays fresh across multiple wears without washing
  • Sleep shirt for cold bedrooms or for travel in unpredictable climates
  • A wool option for people who run cold or have poor circulation

70% organic merino wool, 30% silk — 190 gsm fine rib knit

Fiber blend

70% organic virgin merino wool, 30% silk. The merino delivers warmth, breathability, and odor resistance; the silk softens the hand, reduces any potential for itch, and adds a subtle sheen. This is the gentlest wool blend Engel makes for next-to-skin wear.

Weight: 190 gsm

Mid-light weight. Substantial enough to insulate as a true thermal layer, thin enough to layer cleanly under shirts and sweaters without bulk at the cuffs, hem, or collar.

Fine rib knit

A close, stretchy rib that hugs the body for efficient heat trapping and follows movement without bagging. The rib structure also adds vertical stretch — useful at the shoulders, elbows, and torso during active wear.

Extended back

A slightly longer back panel keeps the shirt tucked in when you bend, reach overhead, or sit. No exposed lower back when layered under a jacket or while skiing, climbing, or chasing kids.

Made in Germany

Knitted, cut, and sewn in Engel's facility in southern Germany. Quality control, dyes, and finishing all conform to European organic textile standards.

Certifications

GOTS organic certified, IVN BEST certified (the most stringent organic textile standard in the world), and kbT wool. No harmful dyes, no AZO dyes, no heavy metals.

Built around how merino actually performs

Temperature regulating

Merino wool warms when it's cold and breathes when it's not — it actively responds to your body and the weather, instead of just holding heat in.

Odor-resistant

Wool is naturally bacteria-resistant, so it doesn't develop body odor the way synthetic and cotton base layers do. Air it out between wears; wash less often.

Moisture-wicking

Wool absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, pulling sweat away from skin and keeping you dry — a meaningful difference from cotton.

Soft against skin

Fine merino combined with 30% silk produces an unusually soft hand — gentle enough for sensitive skin and a good first wool layer for anyone who's reacted to coarser wool in the past.

Engel men's size chart

Engel uses European men's sizing. Each size below covers a two-size EU range and corresponds roughly to the international S/M/L equivalents. European cuts run slightly slim — if you're at the upper end of a range or between sizes, size up.

EcoAble label EU size range Approx. US chest Approx. fit
Small EU 46–48 36–38 in (91–97 cm) International S
Medium EU 50–52 40–42 in (102–107 cm) International M
Large EU 54–56 44–46 in (112–117 cm) International L
Sizing tip
The fine rib knit has significant stretch, so the shirt is meant to fit close to the body for thermal efficiency — not loose. If you prefer a relaxed fit or plan to layer over another base layer, size up.

Is this the right base layer for you?

Who it works well for
Men who run cold, work outdoors in winter, travel in mixed climates, or want a single thermal shirt that handles skiing, hiking, office layering, and sleep equally well. Also a strong choice for anyone moving away from synthetic base layers because of odor, microplastic shedding, or skin sensitivity.
Trade-offs to be aware of
Wool is not as durable as a heavy cotton tee — snags and abrasion will eventually show on any fine merino knit. The fit is athletic and close, not boxy. And like all wool/silk pieces, it requires hand or wool-cycle washing in cold water. If you need a base layer you can throw in a hot wash with everything else, this isn't it.
On wool itch
Engel uses fine merino at roughly 17–19 microns, blended with 30% silk. For most people including those with sensitive skin, this combination reads as soft, not scratchy. A small percentage of people are sensitive to wool regardless of fineness — if you've had reactions before, this wool/silk blend is the gentlest option Engel makes, and is generally where to start.
On price
This is a heritage German base layer at heritage German pricing. Cared for properly, an Engel wool/silk top routinely lasts five to ten years of regular wear — significantly outlasting synthetic equivalents. The cost per wear is the honest comparison.

How to wash a wool/silk base layer

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener

Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Press water out gently — never wring or twist. Lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. The 30% silk content does not change the routine.

Because wool is naturally odor-resistant, this shirt rarely needs full washing — airing it out overnight between wears is usually enough. Most owners wash a wool/silk base layer every 5–10 wears rather than every wear. Hot water, agitation, or tumble drying will felt and shrink wool permanently, so the cold-water rule is non-negotiable.

Frequently asked questions

Is this shirt itchy?
For most people, no. Fine merino wool at 17–19 microns combined with 30% silk feels smooth and soft against the skin — meaningfully different from coarse traditional wool. If you've reacted to wool sweaters in the past, this wool/silk blend is the gentlest base layer Engel makes and is the right place to start. A very small percentage of people are sensitive to all wool regardless of fineness.
How warm is 190 gsm — is it a true thermal layer?
Yes. 190 gsm is mid-light weight: thin enough to layer cleanly under a sweater or jacket without bulk, but heavy enough to provide real insulation as a winter base. Merino regulates temperature actively, so the same shirt is comfortable in both freezing weather (under layers) and milder weather (worn alone).
How is this different from synthetic thermal underwear?
Three main differences. First, merino doesn't develop odor — synthetic base layers smell after one wear because polyester traps bacteria. Second, wool absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, while synthetics simply move sweat to the surface. Third, merino is comfortable across a wider temperature range, so one wool shirt covers what would otherwise require multiple synthetic weights.
What size should I order?
Engel uses European men's sizing. EU 46–48 (S) fits a 36–38 inch chest, EU 50–52 (M) fits 40–42 inches, EU 54–56 (L) fits 44–46 inches. European cuts run slim — if you're between sizes, prefer a relaxed fit, or plan to layer over another base layer, size up.
How often do I need to wash it?
Far less often than a cotton or synthetic shirt. Wool's natural odor and bacteria resistance means most owners wash these base layers every 5–10 wears. Air the shirt out overnight between wears. When it does need washing, hand wash or use the wool cycle with cold water and wool wash detergent, then lay flat to dry.
Will it shrink?
It will if washed in hot water, agitated heavily, or tumble dried — wool felts permanently under those conditions. Washed correctly (cold water, gentle handling, lay flat to dry), it holds its size and shape for years. The fine rib knit naturally has stretch and recovery built in.
Can I wear it on its own, not just as a base layer?
Yes. The fine rib knit and clean crew neck make it work as a standalone shirt for casual wear, lounge wear, or sleep. The slim European cut is closer to a fitted tee than a loose undershirt. Many customers buy multiples and rotate them as everyday shirts.
What does IVN BEST certification mean?
IVN BEST is the strictest organic textile standard in the world — more rigorous than GOTS. It requires natural fibers from certified organic agriculture, strict limits on dyes and processing chemicals, and verified social and ecological standards across the entire supply chain. Very few brands carry IVN BEST certification on their full line; Engel is one of them.
