Engel Men's Merino Wool & Silk Sleeveless Thermal Base Layer

A fine-rib wool/silk tank from Engel that delivers real cold-weather warmth without bulk. Wear it under a button-down at the office, under a sweater on cold commutes, or under a ski shell on the mountain. The 70/30 wool-silk blend is the most refined natural-fiber base layer Engel makes — light, breathable, odor-resistant, and gentle enough to wear all day.

Engel Natur — German organic wool since 1927

Engel is a family-run German textile manufacturer that has been making natural-fiber clothing for nearly a century. They are founding members of the International Association for Natural Textiles (IVN) and one of the most respected names in organic wool apparel in Europe. Roughly 95% of their range carries either GOTS or IVN BEST certification — two of the world's strictest organic textile standards.

All Engel garments are knit, dyed, and sewn in Germany — most at Engel's own workshop in Pfullingen, the rest with partner workshops within 50 km. The merino wool comes from controlled organic livestock farming (kbT) in South America, where pesticides and mulesing are forbidden and shearing must be stress-free. The silk is mulberry silk, the finest grade. No chemical finishing is used, and all dyes are heavy-metal-free and free of harmful AZO compounds.

A versatile thermal layer for fall, winter, and spring

This sleeveless top fills the gap a synthetic base layer can't — adding real warmth under tailored or fitted shirts without the bulk, the chemical smell, or the static. Most owners reach for it in three modes:

Daily wear
Under work and casual clothing
Under a dress shirt, button-down, or fine-knit sweater, the fine rib lies flat without showing through and adds genuine warmth on cold commutes, in poorly heated offices, and during long days outdoors. Acts like a winter undershirt with thermal benefit.
Outdoor activity
Ski, hike, hunt, winter sport
Under a mid-layer and shell, the wool/silk wicks sweat away from the skin and stays warm even when damp — the property that makes wool meaningfully better than polyester base layers for high-output cold-weather activity. Naturally odor-resistant for multi-day trips.
Travel & sleep
Plane, hotel, pajama top
Packs flat, dries quickly, resists wrinkles, and stays fresh across multi-day trips with airing alone. Many owners use it as a winter sleep top — wool regulates body temperature actively, preventing both night sweats and the chill of synthetic sleepwear.
Why not just wear a cotton undershirt?
Cotton holds moisture against the skin and loses insulation when damp. Wool/silk wicks sweat outward, retains warmth even when wet, and resists odor for days at a time. For anyone who's been clammy under a winter coat or in an overheated office, this difference is the entire point of a wool base layer.

70% organic merino wool / 30% mulberry silk, 190 GSM fine rib knit

Engel's signature wool/silk fabric is a fine rib knit weighing approximately 190 grams per square meter — substantial enough to add real warmth but light enough to wear cleanly under fitted shirts. The rib structure gives the fabric a four-way stretch that moves with the body, which is why the same top works for sedentary office wear and high-output sport.

Fiber blend
70% organic virgin merino wool (kbT — controlled organic animal husbandry) and 30% mulberry silk, the highest grade of silk. Fine merino fiber diameter around 17 to 19 microns. Mulesing-free.
Construction
Fine rib knit, approximately 190 GSM. Lightweight, four-way stretch, smooth flat hand. Cut for a snug base-layer fit that layers cleanly under shirts and sweaters.
Origin
Knit, dyed, and sewn in Germany at Engel's Pfullingen manufactory or partner workshops within 50 km. Made by people who have been making wool clothing since 1927.
Certifications
IVN BEST certified — stricter than GOTS, requiring 100% controlled-organic natural fibers. Dyes are heavy-metal-free and AZO-dye-free. No chemical finishing. All trims are nickel-free.

Key features of the wool/silk base layer

Temperature regulating
Merino wool actively regulates body temperature — warm when you're cold, cooler when you're working hard. Unlike synthetic base layers that just trap heat, wool releases excess warmth as your body temperature rises, so you don't overheat during high activity or in heated rooms.
Warm when wet
Wool fiber can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, and it retains its insulation even when saturated. This is what separates wool base layers from synthetic ones during sweat-heavy activity in the cold.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool's surface structure resists the bacteria that cause odor. Most owners wear this top several days between washes — airing it overnight is usually enough. A real advantage for travel, ski trips, and back-to-back work days.
Silk-softened next-to-skin feel
The 30% mulberry silk content makes the fabric meaningfully softer than pure merino — smoother, with a slight cool sheen and gentler hand against the skin. The right choice if you've found pure wool too warm or too textured for bare-skin wear.
Invisible under fitted clothing
The fine rib knit and sleeveless cut sit flat under dress shirts, polos, and fitted sweaters without bunching or showing through. Adds warmth without changing your silhouette.
Built to last years, not seasons
Made in Germany with premium fabric and careful construction. With proper wool care, owners commonly report wearing the same tops in regular rotation for five-plus years — a meaningful part of the value at this price point.

European size chart — by chest measurement

Engel uses European sizing, which is based on chest measurement in centimeters. Measure around the fullest part of your chest with arms relaxed at your sides, and choose the size band that includes that measurement.

EU size US size Chest (cm) Chest (inches)
46–48 Small 92–98 cm 36–39 in
50–52 Medium 98–104 cm 39–41 in
54–56 Large 104–110 cm 41–43 in
European sizing runs slim
European cuts are slightly slimmer than US equivalents, and base layer tops are intentionally fitted to layer cleanly. If you're between sizes, prefer a relaxed fit, or have a broader build through the chest and shoulders, size up by one band. The wool/silk blend has natural stretch — too snug isn't the problem; too loose loses some of the thermal benefit.

Is this base layer right for you?

Works well for
Men who run cold in winter, work in heated buildings that swing between hot and chilly, commute in cold weather, or spend time outdoors in fall, winter, and spring. Anyone tired of synthetic base layers that smell after one wear, hold sweat against the skin, or feel plastic against the body. Men with sensitive skin or wool sensitivities who have found pure merino too warm or too textured — the silk softens both. Anyone who values buy-once, last-a-decade construction over annually replaced cheaper alternatives.
Trade-offs to be aware of
Wool/silk requires gentle care — hand wash or wool cycle in cold water, lay flat to dry. Hot water and tumble drying will felt and shrink the garment permanently, and there's no recovering from that. The fabric is fitted rather than relaxed; if you prefer a loose-fitting undershirt that bunches under tucked-in shirts, this isn't that. Price is in line with other heritage European wool base layers and meaningfully higher than synthetic equivalents — the value case rests on longevity, comfort, and not having to replace synthetics every season.
Wool/silk versus pure merino — which to choose
Pure merino base layers give the same temperature regulation at a slightly lower price. The 30% silk content in this blend makes the fabric softer, smoother, and gentler next to skin, with a more refined finish that works for office wear as well as outdoor activity. If you have sensitive skin, are new to wearing wool against the skin, or want one base layer that works for both ski day and the boardroom, the wool/silk is worth the difference. If you're buying purely for utility under thick outerwear, pure merino is fine.

How to care for your wool/silk base layer

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool-specific detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No bleach or fabric softener Air between wears

Hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan, Sonett wool wash, or similar), or use the wool/delicate cycle on your machine with cold water only. Do not rub or wring. Rinse with plenty of water at the same temperature as the wash water — sudden temperature changes can cause shrinkage. Wrap the top in a clean towel, gently press out excess water, and lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat.

Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs frequent washing. Most owners air the top overnight between wears and wash it every one to two weeks of regular rotation, or sooner after sweat-heavy activity. Spot cleaning with a damp cloth handles most small marks. The garment does not need to be washed before first use — Engel uses no harmful chemicals in manufacturing.

The one care mistake to avoid

Hot water plus mechanical agitation plus heat (tumble drying) is what causes wool to felt and shrink. Wool that has been felted cannot be restored. Once the cold-water-and-flat-dry routine is habit, it takes about five minutes per wash, and these tops easily last five years or more.

Common questions about men's wool/silk base layers

Will wool itch against my skin?
For most men, no. Engel uses fine merino at approximately 17 to 19 microns — meaningfully finer than the coarse wool that older sweaters were made from — and the 30% mulberry silk content adds noticeable softness on top of that. If you've had reactions to pure wool in the past or have sensitive skin, the wool/silk blend is the gentlest natural option and is more likely to be tolerated than pure merino. A small percentage of men remain sensitive to wool at any fiber count.
Why wool/silk instead of a synthetic base layer?
Three reasons. First, wool retains its insulation when wet — synthetics lose warmth when saturated with sweat. Second, wool resists odor naturally, so you can wear it multiple days between washes; synthetic base layers typically smell after one wear. Third, wool/silk feels gentler against the skin, breathes more naturally, and lasts years rather than seasons. The trade-off is care: wool needs cold-water washing and air drying, whereas synthetics can usually go in any wash cycle.
Can I wear this under a dress shirt?
Yes — that's one of the main use cases. The fine rib knit lies flat under fitted dress shirts and polos, and the sleeveless cut means no visible cuff at the wrist. Engel's natural-tone colors work under most shirt colors without showing through.
What does IVN BEST certification mean?
IVN BEST is a German textile certification considered the strictest in the industry — even stricter than GOTS. It requires 100% controlled-organic natural fibers, prohibits a longer list of chemicals, and enforces stricter labor standards. The certification is awarded by the Internationaler Verband der Naturtextilwirtschaft (International Association of Natural Textile Industry) and audited independently. Roughly 95% of Engel's range is certified to either GOTS or IVN BEST.
What size should I order?
Measure your chest at the fullest point with arms relaxed, and choose the size band that includes that measurement. European sizing runs slightly slim compared to US standards, and base layers are cut close to the body. If you have a broad build, prefer a less fitted feel, or are between sizes, size up.
How often does this need to be washed?
Less often than synthetic or cotton base layers. Wool fiber is naturally odor-resistant and self-cleans through exposure to fresh air. Most owners air the top overnight between wears and full-wash it every one to two weeks. For multi-day ski trips or sweat-heavy activity, wash sooner.
Will this shrink?
Only if washed incorrectly. Wool shrinks and felts when exposed to hot water plus mechanical agitation plus heat. Following the cold-water wool wash and lay-flat-to-dry routine, the top holds its shape and size for years.
Is the wool sourced humanely?
Yes. Engel sources from controlled organic livestock farming (kbT in German) in South America. The standard forbids mulesing, requires stress-free shearing, and prohibits pesticides on animals and pastures. It is one of the strictest wool sourcing standards available.
