Hirsch Natur · Organic Wool Socks

100% Organic Virgin Wool Thick Socks for Men and Women

German-made, GOTS-certified organic wool socks designed for warmth and durability. These mid-calf socks are knitted on solar-powered looms and dyed with nontoxic colors—perfect for anyone seeking premium natural fiber socks.

Hirsch Natur is a family-owned German hosiery specialist founded in 1928, with nearly a century of expertise in crafting organic wool socks and legwear. As a founding member of the International Association of Natural Textiles (IVN) and the International Association of Natural Textiles Industry (eV), Hirsch Natur has been a pioneer in Europe's natural textile movement. Their commitment to ecological production is embedded in every step: organic wool sourcing, solar-powered knitting machines, nontoxic dyes, and zero synthetic reinforcement on socks designed to age beautifully. Each pair is made in Germany and reflects the brand's philosophy that quality knitwear should be built to last multiple seasons.

Cold-Weather Warmth & Year-Round Durability

These thick, mid-calf wool socks excel in cold climates and winter outdoor activities. The substantial knit weight provides insulation for temperatures below 50°F (10°C), making them ideal for hiking, camping, travel, or simply keeping feet warm during winter at home. Organic virgin wool naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture, so your feet stay dry even during active wear or high-altitude adventures.

Hirsch Natur socks are also beloved by people seeking durable, chemical-free legwear for sensitive skin. Unlike conventional socks treated with flame retardants or synthetic dyes, these are colored with nontoxic plants and minerals, and the untreated virgin wool retains its natural antibacterial and odor-resistant properties.

Organic Wool, German Craftsmanship

Fiber
100% organic virgin wool. Virgin wool means the fibers have never been recycled or blended—pure, first-use fiber from GOTS-certified organic sheep farming.
Weight & Knit
Thick mid-calf knit designed for maximum insulation and durability. The substantial construction means these socks last multiple seasons with proper care.
Certifications
GOTS-certified organic throughout the entire production chain—from fiber farming to dyeing and finishing. Made in Germany by a founding member of the IVN (International Association of Natural Textiles).
Construction Details
Knitted on solar-powered looms. No synthetic sole reinforcement—the entire sock is 100% untreated wool, which means it softens and molds to your foot over time, but requires gentle care to preserve.
What makes these different from other wool socks

Most wool socks include synthetic nylon or polyester reinforcement on the heel and toe for durability. Hirsch Natur uses none—the entire sock is organic wool. This makes them softer and gentler from day one, but also means the fibers are more vulnerable to friction wear over time. (See "Trade-Offs" below for the solution.)

Temperature-Regulating Wool
Organic wool naturally insulates in cold weather and breathes when active, keeping feet at a comfortable temperature without overheating. No synthetic thermal coating needed.
Naturally Odor-Resistant
Wool fibers inhibit bacterial growth, so these socks stay fresher longer between washes than cotton or synthetics. Hand-wash once a month or as needed.
Chemical-Free Comfort
No pesticides, insecticides, fire retardants, or synthetic dyes. GOTS-certified organic throughout production. Safe for sensitive skin and the environment.
Elastic Ankle Support
Elastic threads woven into the cuff keep socks securely in place without cutting off circulation. Mid-calf length provides stability during hiking and outdoor wear.

Size Chart

Hirsch Natur socks are sized by European shoe size and include heel-to-toe length. European sizing runs true to size. If your foot falls between two sizes, choose the larger size for a more comfortable fit.

EU Size US Women's Size US Men's Size Heel to Toe Length

38–39 8–9 6.5–7.5 9 inches (23 cm)

Who These Socks Work Best For

Best For
Anyone seeking premium, chemical-free wool socks made to last. These are ideal for people with sensitive skin or chemical sensitivities, outdoor enthusiasts in cold climates, travelers, and those who value transparent supply chains and ecological production. They are also excellent for layering over slippers indoors (see Trade-Offs).
Trade-Offs
Because these socks have no synthetic reinforcement, the sole fibers are more delicate and vulnerable to friction wear from rough surfaces. Wearing them directly on hardwood, tile, or carpet will gradually thin the sole fibers. To extend their life significantly, wear them over slippers when indoors. This simple step protects the sole from everyday friction and keeps them looking and feeling like new for years. Outdoors, the soles hold up well and will develop a comfortable patina over time. Also, like all wool, these require hand or delicate-cycle machine washing in cold water—warmer water, agitation, or tumble drying will cause felting and shrinkage.
Investment Case
These are a premium purchase—but designed to last 5+ years with proper care. One pair of Hirsch Natur socks equals the lifespan of 3–4 pairs of conventional wool socks. The absence of chemicals and synthetics also means zero off-gassing and full peace of mind for sensitive skin. For families buying organic, chemical-free basics, these represent excellent long-term value and significantly reduce waste compared to annual sock replacement cycles.

Washing & Care

Hand wash preferred Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble dry

Hand washing (preferred): Fill a basin with cold water and add a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash). Submerge the socks and gently agitate for 5–10 minutes. Rinse in fresh cold water until the water runs clear—avoid temperature changes between rinses, as this can cause felting. Gently press water out; never wring. Lay flat on a clean towel to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight.

Machine washing: If using a washing machine, select the wool or delicate cycle, use cold water only, and choose a gentle wool detergent. Maximum spin speed should not exceed 400 revolutions. Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or standard laundry detergent—these damage wool fibers. EcoAble is not responsible for shrinkage or felting caused by improper washing.

Drying: Lay flat on a clean, dry surface to air dry. Do not hang, wring, or tumble dry. Do not use a heated dryer. Wool naturally resists odor and rarely needs washing after every wear—airing between uses is often enough.

Longevity tip: Wear over slippers when indoors to protect the soles from friction. This practice alone will significantly extend the life of your socks and keep the sole fibers intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these socks itchy? Will they irritate sensitive skin?
No. These are 100% virgin wool at approximately 20–23 microns (fine), which is soft and gentle enough for most sensitive skin. Organic virgin wool is notably softer than coarser or recycled wool. If your child or family member has reacted to wool before, these may still work—they're among the softest wool socks available. You can test on a small area first or pair them with another pair of socks if concerned. Many families find these are the first wool socks their children will wear without complaint.
Will these socks keep my feet warm in winter?
Yes. The thick knit and 100% wool construction provide excellent insulation for cold weather and outdoor activities. These socks are designed for temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and perform well down to freezing. Wool naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture, so your feet stay warm and dry even during active wear. Pair them with properly fitting boots and they will keep your feet comfortable in winter conditions.
Why don't these have synthetic reinforcement on the heel and toe?
Hirsch Natur uses 100% organic wool throughout, including the heel and toe. This means the entire sock is chemical-free and gentle from day one. The trade-off is that the sole fibers can thin over time from friction on rough surfaces. To preserve them, wear the socks over slippers indoors. Outdoors on natural surfaces or with proper footwear, they hold up excellently and develop a comfortable, lived-in feel over time.
How long will these socks last?
With proper care, 5+ years. The thick knit and virgin wool construction are designed for durability and longevity. Wearing them over slippers indoors significantly extends their life by protecting the sole from friction. Hand-washing and lay-flat drying also ensure they maintain their shape and softness. Many families find one pair lasts longer than 3–4 pairs of conventional wool socks.
Can I machine wash these socks?
Yes, but hand washing is preferred. If using a machine, select the wool or delicate cycle with cold water, a maximum spin speed of 400 rpm, and a gentle wool detergent. Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or standard detergent. EcoAble is not responsible for shrinkage or felting caused by improper washing (warm water, high heat, agitation, or tumble drying). Following the hand-wash method will preserve the socks longest.
Do these socks smell? Do I need to wash them often?
No. Organic wool is naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant due to the lanolin in the fibers. You can wear these socks multiple times before washing—simply air them between uses. Hand-wash once a month or as needed. This is one major advantage over cotton or synthetic socks, which need frequent washing to stay fresh.
Are these socks certified organic? What does GOTS mean?
Yes. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, the world's leading standard for organic textiles. GOTS certification covers the entire production chain—from organic sheep farming and wool processing through dyeing, finishing, and all the way to the finished product. It ensures the sheep are raised on certified organic farms with strict animal welfare standards, no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are used, and no harmful chemicals are applied during manufacturing. Hirsch Natur is also a founding member of the IVN (International Association of Natural Textiles), which has even stricter ecological requirements.

    Love them

Published by Angel on Oct 5th 2022

I originally bought the yellow melange. Love the colors and length. Also love that they are of natural material. I bought 4 more in other colors and length. Great caring company. That is why I referred a friend to them to also buy.
