The Brand
Engel Natur — nearly a century of German wool
Engel has been making natural fiber clothing and blankets in Pfullingen, Germany since 1927 — one of the most respected names in European wool. Roughly 95% of the collection carries GOTS or IVN BEST certification, two of the strictest organic textile standards in the world. Production happens in Engel's own workshop and partner mills within about 40–50 km of the factory, under verified fair wages and working conditions.
The merino fleece is made from organically raised, mulesing-free sheep wool, processed and knitted in Germany. No chemical finishes, no AZO dyes, no flame retardants — just untreated wool the way it has been done well for generations.
What This Is
A versatile wool fleece blanket that grows with your baby
At 31×40 inches (approximately 80×100 cm), this is the most useful size in a baby blanket — large enough to wrap a newborn for receiving, drape over a sleeping toddler, or cover a child in a stroller or car seat, yet small enough to live in the diaper bag without taking it over. The brushed wool fleece feels nothing like coarse traditional wool: it's plush, slightly stretchy, and often mistaken for the softest synthetic fleece on first touch — with the crucial difference that this one breathes, regulates temperature, and resists odor naturally.
Newborn receiving blanket
Soft and stretchy enough for swaddling and skin-to-skin moments in the early weeks.
Stroller & car seat layer
Adds genuine warmth without bulk; tucks easily over baby's legs on cool walks or in the car.
Crib & nap blanket
Temperature-regulating wool helps babies sleep without overheating — cooler on warm nights, warmer on cool ones.
Travel & on-the-go
Lightweight and washable, ideal for the diaper bag, baby carrier, airplane lap blanket, or a clean surface on the floor.
Materials & Construction
What wool fleece actually is
Wool fleece (German: Wollfleece) is knitted merino wool that has been brushed to a soft pile on one or both sides — the same idea as synthetic fleece, but made entirely from natural fiber. The result is a fabric that's lofty and plush like synthetic fleece, with the temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, odor-resistant properties that only wool can offer. It's a distinctly different fabric from boiled wool (which is dense and felted) and from fine merino knit base layers (which are smooth and thin).
Fiber
100% organic virgin merino wool (kbT — certified organic livestock farming, mulesing-free). Sourced from organic farms in South America, knitted in Germany.
Fabric weight
Approximately 290–310 g/m² (GSM). A mid-weight brushed fleece — substantial enough to add real warmth, light enough to layer or pack.
Construction
Knitted then brushed to a soft pile. Edge-finished for stability and a clean, simple look that works in any nursery.
Size
Approximately 31×40 inches (~80×100 cm) — the standard European baby blanket size, sized for receiving, stroller, crib, and toddler use.
Origin
Knitted, brushed, dyed, and finished in Germany under GOTS- and IVN BEST-certified conditions.
Certifications
IVN BEST — the most stringent natural textile certification available, requiring 100% certified organic natural fiber and the strictest environmental and social standards. Free from AZO dyes, heavy metals, chemical finishes, and flame retardants.
Why Wool Fleece
What pure merino fleece does that synthetic fleece can't
Temperature-regulating
Merino wool actively responds to body temperature, warming when cold and releasing excess heat when warm. Babies stay comfortable through changing conditions rather than overheating the way they often do in synthetic fleece.
Warm even when damp
Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet, and continues to insulate when damp — useful for spills, drool, and unexpected weather.
Naturally odor-resistant
Wool's structure resists odor-causing bacteria, so the blanket can be used for weeks between washes. A quick airing is usually enough.
Hypoallergenic & untreated
No flame retardants, no chemical softeners, no synthetic microfibers. A clean choice for newborns and babies with sensitive or eczema-prone skin.
Honest Assessment
Who this works for — and what to know
Best for
Families who want a single high-quality blanket that covers receiving, stroller, crib, and travel use; parents avoiding synthetic fleece because of microplastic shedding or overheating; gift-givers looking for something that lasts and gets used for years. The size (31×40 in) is the everyday workhorse size — not too small to outgrow quickly, not so large it's awkward to manage.
Be aware
Wool fleece is plush and substantial, but at one layer it's not a deep-winter outdoor blanket on its own — pair with a snowsuit or layer over a sleep sack for sub-freezing conditions. Like all knit fleeces, it can develop small surface pills with friction or machine washing; this is normal wool behavior, not a defect, and is minimized with hand washing. Per AAP guidance, loose blankets shouldn't be used in a sleeping infant's crib — reserve crib use for awake nap time or supervised settings, and use a wearable sleep sack overnight.
Care commitment
Wool fleece needs hand washing for best longevity — cool water, wool wash, lay flat to dry. No hot water, no tumble dryer, no fabric softener. Once you know the routine it's simple, and the blanket needs washing far less often than cotton. With proper care these blankets are heirloom-quality and often passed between siblings.
Care
How to wash wool fleece without ruining it
Hand wash recommended Cool water Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No fabric softener No wringing
For most spots and light soiling, dab with a damp cloth and let air dry — full washing is rarely needed. When the blanket does need a full wash, fill a basin with cool water and a wool-specific detergent such as Eucalan, Sonett, or Disana wool wash. Submerge the blanket and gently press — do not rub, wring, or agitate. Rinse in water of the same temperature (sudden temperature changes can felt wool). Press water out gently, roll in a clean towel to absorb more, then lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat or sunlight.

FAQ
Common questions about Engel wool fleece blankets
What's the difference between wool fleece and synthetic fleece?
Synthetic fleece is made from polyester (a plastic fiber) — it's warm and soft but doesn't breathe well, can cause overheating, traps odors, and sheds microplastics into water with every wash. Wool fleece is brushed knitted merino — equally plush to the touch, but it actively regulates temperature, wicks moisture, resists odor without chemicals, and is fully biodegradable. The main trade-off is that wool fleece needs gentler washing.
What is the fabric weight (GSM)?
Approximately 290–310 g/m² for Engel's wool fleece. This is a mid-weight fleece — substantial enough to add real warmth as a blanket, light enough to pack and travel with.
Will the wool itch my baby?
Engel uses fine merino wool, brushed to a soft pile that feels nothing like coarse wool. Most babies and parents are surprised by how soft it is — many describe it as cloud-like. A small percentage of children are still sensitive to any wool; if your baby has reacted to wool before, test against bare skin briefly before extended use.
Can I use this as a swaddle?
Yes, in the early newborn weeks the fleece has gentle stretch that works well for receiving and light swaddling. As babies grow more active, transition to using it as a draped or lap blanket rather than a wrapped swaddle.
Is this safe for use in the crib overnight?
Loose blankets aren't recommended for sleeping infants per AAP safe-sleep guidance, regardless of fabric. For overnight sleep under about 12 months, use a wearable wool sleep sack instead. This blanket is ideal for receiving, supervised lap and floor time, stroller, car seat, and as a toddler blanket once your child is past the loose-blanket age.
Can it be machine washed?
Hand washing is strongly recommended for longest life. If you must use a machine, choose the wool/delicate cycle only, cool water (no temperature changes), wool wash detergent, and air dry flat — never tumble dry. Hot water, agitation, or the dryer will felt and shrink wool fleece permanently.
Is the wool mulesing-free?
Yes. Engel sources from certified organic merino farms (kbT — controlled organic livestock farming) where mulesing is prohibited and animal welfare is part of the certification.
Where is it made?
Made in Germany. Engel knits, brushes, dyes, and finishes the fabric in its own facility in Pfullingen and partner workshops within about 50 km, under GOTS- and IVN BEST-certified production.
