Disana · Knitted Merino Wool Baby Blanket

Disana Honeycomb Merino Wool Baby Blanket

100% organic merino wool, honeycomb knit, 480 GSM — made in Germany. A temperature-regulating, naturally breathable blanket sized right for newborns through toddlers.

Disana: Four Decades of German Organic Wool

Disana is a family-run company in Germany and a founding member of the International Association of Natural Textiles (IVN) — the organization that sets the most rigorous standards in the natural-fiber industry. They have been making certified organic merino wool clothing and blankets for over 40 years, sourcing wool exclusively from organic livestock farming and processing everything under one roof in Germany. Disana holds both GOTS and IVN Best certification, the latter being the highest organic textile standard currently available. Their honeycomb blanket is one of their signature pieces: a knitting pattern so technically demanding that it can be produced on only a small number of machines on their family production line.

A Year-Round Layer, Not a Single-Season Item

At 480 GSM, this is a mid-to-substantial weight knit — warm enough for use as a primary cover in a cool room (around 16–20°C / 61–68°F), and breathable enough to use as a light layer in warmer conditions without overheating. Merino wool regulates temperature by absorbing and releasing moisture vapor as conditions change, which means it adjusts with the baby rather than holding a fixed warmth level the way a synthetic blanket does.

Practical uses: receiving blanket at the hospital, pram or stroller cover, floor play mat with thermal insulation from cold ground, crib blanket for naps, travel blanket, and a swaddle-style wrap for fussy newborns who respond well to snug containment. The 80 x 100 cm / 31 x 40 in size works well from newborn through approximately 2 years as a full-coverage blanket, and remains useful for older children as a lap or stroller blanket.

Temperature guidance
This blanket works well as the primary cover in rooms between 16–22°C (61–72°F). In warmer rooms above 22°C (72°F), use it folded or as a single drape layer rather than a full wrap. It is not a replacement for a rated sleep sack in a cold nursery below 16°C (61°F) — pair with a wool sleep sack in those conditions.

What This Blanket Is Made Of

Fiber
100% organic merino wool. No synthetic blends, no cotton backing, no lining. Pure wool throughout.
Fabric Weight
480 GSM (grams per square meter). A substantial mid-weight knit — noticeably denser than a lightweight receiving blanket, but still flexible and drapeable rather than stiff. [Verify with manufacturer catalog before publishing.]
Knit Construction
Honeycomb knit pattern. Produces two distinct sides: one relatively smooth, one with visible raised honeycomb cells. Both sides are soft and usable; the texture difference is subtle in use. The knitted edge is finished without seams for a clean, comfortable perimeter.
Dimensions
80 x 100 cm / approximately 31 x 40 inches. One size.
Wool Origin
Raw fiber: organic merino from Patagonia, Argentina. Spinning: Europe. Knitting and processing: Disana, Germany. The entire manufacturing chain is tracked and certified under GOTS and IVN Best.
Certifications
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and IVN Best — the highest organic textile certification available, covering farming, processing, dyeing, and final product.

A note on certifications: GOTS covers the full supply chain from fiber farming through processing and dyeing, requiring both organic fiber content and strict limits on chemical inputs. IVN Best goes further, applying the most comprehensive natural textile standards in the world. Disana meeting both is not typical — most brands hold one or the other.

kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) certification is Disana’s organic livestock farming standard for European sourcing. This blanket’s wool is sourced from Patagonian merino flocks certified under equivalent South American organic standards and verified through the GOTS and IVN supply chain audit.

Why This Blanket Is Different

Temperature Regulation
Merino wool absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor before it feels wet, and releases it as conditions change. This active regulation means the blanket responds to your baby’s body rather than holding a fixed warmth level — a meaningful difference from fleece or cotton.
Naturally Odor-Resistant
Wool’s fiber structure is bacteria-resistant, which slows odor development significantly compared to synthetic or cotton blankets. Most uses require only airing between washes rather than a full laundering cycle.
Soft Against Skin
Disana uses fine merino for this blanket — the same grade used for next-to-skin garments. Most babies and newborns with no prior wool sensitivity tolerate fine merino without irritation. If your baby has reacted to coarser wool before, fine merino is meaningfully different and worth a test.
Certified Organic Throughout
GOTS and IVN Best certification means no prohibited pesticides in the fiber farming, no restricted chemical dyes, and no synthetic finishing agents in the final product. What touches your baby’s skin is wool and wool only.
Durable Knit Construction
The honeycomb structure is mechanically dense — it holds its shape wash after wash and resists pilling better than a plain knit at equivalent weight. These blankets routinely last through multiple children when cared for correctly.
Made in Germany
Every stage after spinning — knitting, finishing, quality control, and packaging — takes place at Disana’s facility in Germany. The honeycomb pattern is technically demanding enough that it can only be run on a small number of machines on their production line.

Is This the Right Blanket for You?

Best For
Parents who want a natural-fiber blanket that functions across seasons without needing multiple weights. New babies in temperate climates where room temperature varies. Families who value certified organic inputs and want to know exactly where the fiber came from. Anyone looking for a substantial, lasting gift for a newborn — this is the kind of piece that gets passed to younger siblings rather than replaced after one season.
Trade-Offs to Know
At 480 GSM, this is heavier and denser than a lightweight muslin swaddle — it is not designed for tight swaddling of very small newborns, and it is not a summer-only blanket. A small number of babies are sensitive to wool even at fine merino grades; if your child has had a confirmed reaction to wool before, start with a wool/silk blend garment to test tolerance before committing to a blanket at this price point. Wool also requires more careful washing than cotton (hand or delicate cycle, cold water, lay flat to dry) — this is a straightforward routine once established, but it is a real commitment.
Investment Framing
Disana blankets are priced as heritage pieces, not disposable baby gear. The combination of IVN Best and GOTS certification, German manufacturing, and a technically demanding knit structure justifies the price for buyers who care about these factors. The blanket does not wear out quickly — buyers who maintain it properly report using it for three or more children. If you are comparing it to a synthetic fleece blanket at a fraction of the price, you are comparing different things: this is a long-term natural fiber investment, not a commodity cover.

Keeping This Blanket in Good Condition

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool wash detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying No wringing

Wool is naturally self-cleaning and odor-resistant, so this blanket rarely needs a full wash. Airing it out — outdoors in mild weather or near an open window — removes most odors and refreshes the fiber. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and cool water. When a full wash is needed, hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash), or use the wool or delicate cycle on your machine with cold water. Press water out gently between your hands — never wring or twist. Roll the blanket briefly in a dry towel to remove excess moisture, then lay flat to reshape and air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not tumble dry: the heat and agitation will cause irreversible felting and shrinkage. Pre-washing before first use is not necessary with GOTS-certified wool.

Common Questions About This Blanket

Will this blanket scratch or irritate my newborn’s skin?
Disana uses fine merino wool for this blanket — the same grade they use for next-to-skin base layers. Fine merino wool has a fiber diameter typically in the 17–19 micron range, which is soft enough that most newborns and babies with sensitive skin tolerate it without irritation. That said, a small percentage of babies are sensitive to wool at any grade. If your baby has had a confirmed reaction to wool before, test with a fine merino garment first. If they have no prior wool history, most families find fine merino blankets cause no issues from birth.
What is the GSM of this blanket and what does that mean in practice?
This blanket is 480 GSM (grams per square meter), which is a mid-to-substantial weight knit. In practical terms, it is noticeably denser and warmer than a lightweight muslin or jersey receiving blanket, but still soft, flexible, and drapeable — not stiff like a boiled wool piece. It works well as a primary cover in cool-to-mild room temperatures (roughly 16–22°C / 61–72°F), and can be used more loosely as a single layer in warmer conditions.
Is this blanket safe to use in a crib or bassinet?
Safe sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend keeping loose blankets out of a baby’s sleep space until at least 12 months. This blanket is not designed as a crib sleep cover for newborns or young infants. It works well as a stroller cover, pram blanket, floor play mat, or for supervised wrapping and holding. For temperature management during sleep, a fitted wool sleep sack is the safer and more practical option for young babies.
What does GOTS and IVN Best certification mean for this product?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading international certification for organic textiles. It covers both the organic fiber farming stage and the entire processing chain, including spinning, dyeing, and finishing — requiring that chemical inputs at every stage meet strict health and environmental limits. IVN Best (from the International Association of Natural Textiles) goes further still, applying the most comprehensive natural textile standards currently in existence. Disana holding both certifications means every link in the supply chain — from the Patagonian sheep farms through to the finished blanket — has been independently audited.
How often do I need to wash this blanket?
Much less often than you might expect. Merino wool is naturally bacteria-resistant, which significantly slows odor development. For most uses, airing the blanket outdoors or near an open window is sufficient to freshen it between washes. Spot-cleaning handles most small marks. A full wash is typically needed only when the blanket is visibly soiled or has been through something messy. Many families wash this blanket only a handful of times over an entire season of regular use.
Where is this blanket made and where does the wool come from?
The raw merino fiber comes from organic sheep farming in Patagonia, Argentina. The fiber is spun in Europe, then knitted and finished entirely at Disana’s family production facility in Germany. The honeycomb knit pattern is technically demanding enough that it can only be run on a small number of specialized machines in Disana’s workshop — it is not a pattern that can be easily replicated at scale.
What happens if I wash this blanket in a hot cycle or put it in the dryer?
Hot water and mechanical agitation (especially tumble drying) cause wool fibers to permanently felt and shrink — the blanket will emerge smaller, stiffer, and denser, and cannot be restored to its original state. This is not a manufacturing defect; it is how wool fiber behaves when the wrong care method is used. Cold water, gentle handling, and flat drying are the non-negotiable parts of the care routine. Once this becomes habit, it takes only a few minutes and the blanket will last for years.
Is this a good newborn gift?
It is one of the more practical and lasting newborn gifts available in the natural fiber category. The blanket is useful immediately — as a receiving blanket, pram cover, or play mat — and stays useful well past infancy. The GOTS and IVN Best certification, German provenance, and distinctive honeycomb pattern give it the kind of quality signal that matters to parents who care about natural fibers. It is also compact enough to ship and present easily. One note: include a short care card with the gift, since wool washing is a new concept for many recipients.

    We Love It!

Published by Rebecca W. on May 16th 2025

We are in love with this blanket! It's soft, stretchy, and just so luxurious. The first time I covered my baby in it he was laying on the floor and he was so cozy he fell asleep! That had never happened before. Wool is amazing. We're also loving the Disana wool diaper covers from EcoAble!

    Beautiful!

Beautiful blanket! I considered this purchase for quite a while as it is an investment, but it is so worth it! So soft, very well made, and slightly larger than I had anticipated. I ordered the curry color and it's even prettier in person — a lovely gender-neutral color. 10/10 would recommend!

    Worth Every Penny!

Published by Storm on Mar 21st 2025

I was on the fence about getting one of these blankets and justifying the cost. But let me tell you that it is absolutely worth every penny! This blanket is incredibly well made and so perfect for regulating temperature better than the cotton blankets I have. We got the caramel color blanket for my newborn son and it's a lovely light/medium brown. You won't regret purchasing this blanket for your own kid, grandchild, or as a baby shower gift. I'll be getting more for future children for sure!

    My Favorite Blankets for Baby

Published by Bree P. on Feb 18th 2025

I first purchased this in the curry color and quickly realized how absolutely wonderful these blankets are! So warm and soft, not too bulky. I realized one was not enough and ordered a second in the orange color. Strangely, the orange one is not quite as soft as the curry — a different yarn, I suppose. I still love it, but do wish it were softer like the curry one. All in all these blankets are well worth their price and I will be buying more and gifting them to friends.
