Disana · Boiled Wool Blanket

Disana Doubleface Boiled Wool Blanket

A reversible, two-tone organic merino wool blanket made in Germany — 650 g/m² of dense, temperature-regulating boiled wool for the pram, the sofa, or the foot of the bed.

Disana: German Natural Fiber Craftsmanship Since 1942

Disana has been making certified organic wool clothing and textiles in Germany for decades, building a reputation among natural-parenting communities in Europe and North America for uncompromising fiber quality and transparent manufacturing. Every Disana product — including this blanket — uses kbT-certified merino wool (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung, meaning the wool comes from certified organic livestock farming with strict animal welfare standards) and is GOTS-certified through the full production chain. The raw wool for this blanket comes from Patagonia, Argentina, is spun in Europe, and fulled into fabric at Disana’s German facility.

Four-Season Warmth for Home and Outdoors

The Doubleface blanket is Disana’s heaviest blanket offering. At 650 g/m², it provides substantial warmth that is well-suited to cool and cold weather — draped over a sleeping child, used as an extra layer at the foot of the bed on cold nights, brought along in the pram or car seat, or spread out at outdoor events in shoulder seasons. Its boiled wool construction gives it natural wind resistance and water resistance that knit wool blankets do not have, making it more versatile for outdoor use.

The Doubleface is heavier and warmer than Disana’s single-color boiled wool blanket (420 g/m²) and considerably warmer than the knitted wool blanket. If you are looking for a lighter lap blanket for year-round couch use, the single-color version is a better fit. If you want a blanket that can genuinely replace a light bed quilt in cool weather — or that will go outdoors without complaint — the Doubleface is the right choice.

Which Disana blanket?
Knitted wool blanket: softest hand, most drape, best for warm rooms and tender newborn skin. Single-color boiled wool (420 g/m²): firm, windproof, good all-season weight. Doubleface boiled wool (650 g/m²): the warmest option, reversible two-tone design, best for cold weather and outdoor use.

100% Organic Merino Wool — 650 g/m² Doubleface Boiled Wool

Boiled wool (also called fulled wool or Wollwalk) is knitted fabric that has been washed in hot water and agitated so the fibers felt together into a dense, unified textile. The result is firmer and more compact than a knit, naturally wind-resistant, and water-resistant against light rain and snow — though not waterproof in a sustained downpour. The fabric does not fray or unravel at the edges, which is why boiled wool pieces age so cleanly.

The Doubleface construction means two layers of boiled wool — each a different color — are bonded together, creating a reversible blanket. This is why the Doubleface contains significantly more wool than the single-color version of the same size: the 135×200 cm Doubleface weighs approximately 1,700 g total, compared to roughly 1,275 g for the single-color at the same size. The extra wool adds warmth and a pleasantly substantial weight that many people find comforting without feeling oppressive.

What Makes the Doubleface Different

Reversible Two-Tone Design
Two different colors — one on each face — give you a genuinely different look depending on which side is up. Unlike printed or woven patterns, the color is built into the wool itself and will not fade or peel with age.
Temperature-Regulating Merino Wool
Merino wool actively moves moisture away from the body and adjusts to ambient temperature, keeping sleepers comfortable without overheating. Unlike synthetic weighted blankets, it breathes.
Naturally Wind- and Water-Resistant
Boiled wool’s dense felted structure blocks wind and sheds light moisture, making this blanket genuinely useful outdoors — in the pram, at the football pitch, or at a campsite — not just for indoor decorating.
Rare Washing Required
Wool is naturally odor-resistant and bacteria-resistant. Most everyday freshening is handled by airing the blanket outside for an hour or two. Spot-clean with a damp cloth; surface dirt brushes off once dry. Full washing is needed rarely, if ever.
Heirloom Longevity
Boiled wool does not unravel, fray, or pill the way knits can. With correct care — cold hand wash, lay flat to dry — these blankets are documented to last 20+ years of regular use and are routinely passed between children.
GOTS and kbT Certified
GOTS certification covers the full production chain from fiber farming through dyeing and finishing. kbT certifies the livestock conditions the wool came from. Both are verified annually by independent third-party auditors.

Available Sizes

The Doubleface is available in two sizes. Both use the same 650 g/m² fabric weight and the same Doubleface two-tone construction.

Size Name Dimensions (cm) Dimensions (in) Approx. Weight Best For
Small / Size 1 100 × 135 cm 40 × 53 in Pram, car seat, child’s lap, crib overlay
Large / Size 2 135 × 200 cm 53 × 78.75 in ~1,700 g Adult lap, sofa throw, child’s bed, foot-of-bed layer

For reference: a US twin mattress surface is approximately 97 × 191 cm. The large Doubleface (135 × 200 cm) is wider and slightly longer than a twin mattress surface, making it suitable as a lightweight bed blanket for a child or as an adult lap blanket with generous coverage.

Is This Blanket Right for You?

Best For
Families who want a single blanket that works both indoors and out across autumn and winter. Anyone who has used a boiled wool Disana piece before and knows the quality. People who want an organic wool blanket that will outlast multiple children. Gift buyers looking for something that will genuinely be used rather than stored — the reversible two-tone design makes it visually appealing for both nursery and living room.
Trade-offs to Know
This is a heavy blanket — 1,700 g is substantial. For a newborn or small infant used to lightweight swaddles, the weight may be too much as a direct cover; it works better draped over the pram hood or used as a floor layer. Boiled wool has less drape and softness than a knitted wool blanket — it is firmer and holds its shape rather than conforming loosely. If softness and stretch are priorities over warmth and durability, the Disana knitted wool blanket is a better fit. Hand wash only: this is not a toss-in-the-machine piece.
On the Investment
At 650 g/m² and approximately 1,700 g of certified organic, mulesing-free merino, you are paying for a material cost that is meaningfully higher than conventional wool or synthetic alternatives. Disana manufactures in Germany under GOTS and kbT auditing. This is not a blanket you replace after a few seasons — customers regularly report 15 to 20 years of active use from Disana boiled wool pieces. Measured over that lifespan, the per-year cost is modest.

Caring for Boiled Wool

Hand wash only Cold water Wool wash detergent Do not tumble dry Lay flat to dry Brush surface to refresh Do not bleach Air frequently — wash rarely

Boiled wool blankets rarely need a full wash. Most surface dirt brushes off once dry, and the lanolin-rich fiber naturally resists odor — airing outside for an hour or two refreshes the blanket for most everyday use. Spot-clean localized stains with cold water and a small amount of wool wash, then blot dry.

When a full wash is needed: hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (such as Eucalan or Sonett wool wash). Do not use hot water — heat causes felting and irreversible shrinkage. Press water out gently; never wring or twist. Lay flat on a clean surface, gently reshape to original dimensions, and air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not tumble dry under any circumstances.

No pre-washing is needed before first use. Disana products are manufactured without chemical finishing agents or health-concerning dyes; all inputs must pass GOTS and kbT standards. The blanket is ready to use from the first day.

Moth protection
All wool is susceptible to textile moths when stored. For seasonal storage, keep the blanket in a sealed bag or container with natural moth deterrents (cedar, lavender). Do not use mothballs — the chemicals can damage wool fiber and are harmful in a child’s environment.

Questions About the Disana Doubleface Blanket

What is the difference between the Doubleface blanket and the regular Disana boiled wool blanket?
The single-color boiled wool blanket is one layer of 420 g/m² boiled wool. The Doubleface is two bonded layers — one color on each side — at a combined 650 g/m². The Doubleface contains significantly more wool (the large-size Doubleface weighs approximately 1,700 g versus roughly 1,275 g for the large single-color), making it warmer and heavier. The Doubleface is also fully reversible with a different color on each face. Both are 100% organic merino, GOTS-certified, and made in Germany.
Is boiled wool soft enough for a baby’s skin?
Boiled wool has a firmer, denser surface than a knitted wool blanket — it is not the plush softness of a fleece or a fine merino jersey. It is not typically used as a direct-skin layer for newborns. For pram use, the blanket goes over a bundled baby rather than against bare skin. For older babies and children, the surface is smooth and non-scratchy, but parents who want maximum skin-contact softness typically prefer Disana’s knitted wool blanket instead.
What does “mulesing-free” mean?
Mulesing is a controversial practice used in some commercial sheep farming to prevent flystrike by removing skin folds around a sheep’s hindquarters. It causes significant pain and is banned or phased out in many countries. Disana sources mulesing-free merino wool from Patagonia, where the practice is not used. The kbT (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) certification additionally requires certified organic livestock husbandry with strict animal welfare standards above and beyond the mulesing-free requirement.
Can I use this blanket on a bed, or is it just a throw?
The large size (135×200 cm / 53×78.75 in) is wider than a US twin mattress surface and slightly longer, so it works well as a child’s bed blanket or as an extra warmth layer at the foot of an adult bed for cold nights. It is not large enough to fully cover a full or queen bed as a primary blanket, but many customers use it as a bed-end layer or alongside a duvet for temperature regulation. The small size (100×135 cm) is better suited to a crib overlay, pram, or child’s lap.
Is it waterproof? Can I use it outdoors in rain?
Boiled wool is naturally water-resistant — its dense felted structure causes light moisture to bead and roll off. It handles light rain, snow, and damp air well, which is why it is used for prams and outdoor sitting. It is not waterproof and will eventually saturate in sustained or heavy rain. For a drizzly autumn football match or a damp pram outing, it performs well. For heavy downpours, you would want a waterproof outer layer over it.
How do I wash it without ruining it?
Hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent. Never use hot water — heat causes the fibers to felt further and the blanket will shrink and stiffen irreversibly. Press (do not wring) water out, then lay flat to dry away from direct heat. The good news: boiled wool rarely needs a full wash. Airing it outside freshens it for most everyday use, and surface dirt brushes off once the blanket is dry. Most owners wash it only a few times per year even with regular use.
Does wool smell when it gets wet?
Fresh organic merino wool does not have the unpleasant wet-wool odor associated with lower-quality or chemically processed wool. Some people notice a faint natural lanolin scent when the blanket gets wet — this is the natural oil present in all wool and dissipates as it dries. It is not the same as the musty smell of processed or blended wool products. If you notice any strong odor from a new blanket, a single airing outdoors is typically enough to resolve it.
How long will this blanket last?
With correct cold-water hand washing and proper storage (protected from moths), Disana boiled wool blankets are documented to last 15–20 years of active use. The boiled wool construction does not pill or fray the way knits can. Many customers pass them on to a second or third child. This longevity is a meaningful part of the value calculation at the purchase price.
