Disana: German Boiled Wool Since Lichtenstein

Disana is a German manufacturer based in Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg, known for producing some of the most carefully made boiled wool and knitted wool garments available anywhere. Every Disana piece is made in Germany under fair labor conditions, certified to both GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and IVN Best — the two most rigorous organic textile standards in the world. Disana sources organic merino wool from Argentina, where it is raised without mulesing, then spun in Europe and processed entirely in their German facility. The women’s parka is one of their most requested adult pieces: a genuine everyday coat that holds up to years of cold-weather use without synthetic insulation or coatings.

Three-Season Outerwear for Fall, Winter, and Spring

This parka is designed for cool to cold conditions: fall mornings, winter errands, and breezy spring days when a lighter jacket is not quite enough. The 420 g/m² boiled wool construction makes it substantially warmer than a knitted wool coat of the same thickness, and the felted structure blocks wind far more effectively than woven or loosely constructed outerwear. It is not a softshell or a rain jacket — it handles snow and light rain well, and the wool continues to insulate even as it absorbs some moisture, but it is not designed for sustained downpours.

The relaxed, oversized cut means you can layer a merino base layer and a mid-layer sweater underneath and still move freely. It works equally well over a single knit for mild days or over a full set of wool thermals in deep winter.

Layering note

Buyers who have tried this parka report that even an XS has room for a hoodie and a wool sweater underneath. If you run warm or plan to layer heavily, stay in your usual size. If you run cold and want maximum layering room, consider sizing up one.

What Boiled Wool Is — and Why It Matters at 420 g/m²

Boiled wool (also called “Wollwalk” in German, or fulled wool) starts as a knitted wool fabric that is then washed in hot water with controlled agitation. The heat and movement cause the wool fibers to interlock and mat together, creating a dense, dimensionally stable fabric that is thicker, firmer, and more weather-resistant than the knit it started from. The result is a material with natural loft but minimal drape — it holds its structure, blocks wind, and sheds light precipitation in a way that unfulled wool or woven wool cannot.

Disana’s boiled wool for adult outerwear is produced at 420 g/m². For context: lightweight boiled wool runs around 260 g/m² and is used for baby layers; 420 g/m² is a heavy, outerwear-grade weight. A square meter of this fabric weighs 420 grams. The greater density means better wind resistance, more thermal mass, and a coat that will not lose its shape after repeated wear.

Shell: 100% Organic Boiled Merino Wool

420 g/m² fulled merino. Organic (kbT-certified) merino from Argentina, spun in Europe, processed in Germany. No synthetic blends, no coatings, no chemical water-repellent treatments. The water resistance comes entirely from the density of the wool and its natural lanolin content.

Lining: None

This parka is unlined. The interior surface of the boiled wool is smooth enough for direct wear over a base layer. An unlined construction keeps weight down and allows the wool to breathe fully. Those who prefer a warmer interior can wear a thin merino undershirt beneath.

Certifications

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and IVN Best certified. IVN Best is the most demanding natural textile certification in existence, requiring 100% certified organic natural fibers throughout the entire supply chain. All hardware (zipper, drawstring) is nickel-free and certified free of heavy metals and harmful dyes.

Made in Germany

Cut and sewn at Disana’s facility in Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg, with partner workshops within approximately 50 kilometers. Disana has produced boiled wool outerwear in this region for decades.

What Makes This Parka Different from a Conventional Coat

Naturally Water-Resistant

The dense, fulled wool structure and residual lanolin shed light rain and snow without any synthetic DWR coating. This water resistance does not wash out over time, because it is a property of the wool itself rather than a surface treatment. Performance does diminish if the garment is washed frequently — occasional wool-wash care maintains it.

Wind-Blocking Construction

At 420 g/m², the felted structure leaves very little open pore space. Wind passes around the coat rather than through it. Combined with the oversized hood, drawstring hem, and full front zip, this makes the parka far more effective in exposed conditions than a comparable weight of woven or knitted wool.

Temperature-Regulating Merino Fiber

Merino wool actively manages moisture vapor. Even at 420 g/m², it breathes: wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, releasing it slowly as vapor rather than leaving you clammy. This means you stay comfortable whether you are standing still in the cold or moving actively.

Practical Outerwear Design

Large structured hood sized for adult proportions. Two inset front pockets with zip closure. Full front zipper for easy layering. Drawstring hem to seal out drafts. The cut is intentionally oversized — room for mid-layers is built into the design, not an afterthought.

No Synthetic Materials, No Chemical Finishes

IVN Best certification means 100% certified organic natural fibers with no polyester linings, no synthetic padding, and no PFAS-based water-repellent coatings. If you are buying this coat to avoid microplastic shedding or off-gassing synthetic materials, that goal is fully met here.

Odor-Resistant with Long Wear Cycles

Boiled wool at this weight is naturally odor-resistant. Wool fibers are protein-based and bacteriostatic — the conditions that cause odor in synthetics and conventional cotton do not develop as readily. Most wearers find they can wear this coat for extended periods between washes and simply air it out between uses.

Women’s Sizes XS – L (EU 32–44)

This parka is cut with a deliberate oversized fit to accommodate layering. Disana sizes this garment generously: reviewers who typically wear a US medium have found that XS fits them well with full layering room underneath. We recommend comparing your actual chest and hip measurements to the chart below rather than choosing by your usual size label. If you are between sizes, size down — the relaxed cut absorbs the difference. Arm length runs slightly short on taller wearers (above 5’8”); note this if sleeve length is a priority for you.

Size EU Size US Size (approx.) Bust (in) Hips (in)
XS 32–34 0–2 31–33 33–35
S 36–38 4–6 34–36 36–38
M 38–40 8–10 37–39 39–41
L 42–44 12–14 40–42 42–44

Sizing note: These are body measurements, not garment measurements. The coat itself is cut significantly larger than these measurements — this is by design. Measure your actual chest and hips, then select the size whose range includes your measurements. Because the fit is oversized, most wearers find their usual EU size or even one size smaller fits well with generous layering room.

Bust and hip measurements above reflect standard EU body sizing for these size designations and should be verified against Disana’s published size chart at the time of purchase. [Verify garment measurements with Disana sizing card if available.]

Is This the Right Coat for You?

This coat works well for

Women who want a three-season coat with zero synthetic content. Anyone who has reacted to PFAS coatings, polyester linings, or synthetic insulation. Buyers who run cold and layer heavily — the oversized cut is specifically designed for this. People who live in climates with cold, breezy winters and need something that blocks wind without a puffer profile. Those who prefer a longer coat length (reviewers at 5’3” report it hitting just above the knee). The design is understated and practical rather than fashion-forward, which suits buyers who want outerwear that works rather than outerwear that signals.

Trade-offs to know before you buy

This is not a rain jacket. It handles snow and light rain well, but sustained downpours will eventually soak through. The sleeve length has been noted as slightly short by taller buyers (above 5’8”). The boiled wool exterior has a firm, slightly textured hand rather than a soft or fuzzy feel — it is more utilitarian than luxurious to the touch. The coat is unlined, so the inside surface may feel slightly coarse without a base layer underneath. At 420 g/m², it is a substantial garment — not ultralight packable travel outerwear. This is also a Final Sale item: no returns or exchanges, so use the size chart carefully.

Investment framing

Boiled wool outerwear at this quality level is expensive because it is labor-intensive to produce and uses certified organic, mulesing-free merino. A properly cared-for Disana parka will not degrade the way synthetic outerwear does — there is no DWR coating to reapply, no delaminating membrane, no synthetic fill that compresses over time. With basic care (spot cleaning, airing between uses, wool wash when necessary), this coat can remain a primary outerwear piece for a decade or more. That longevity is part of what justifies the price.

Caring for Boiled Wool Outerwear

Hand wash or wool cycle Cold water only Wool-specific detergent Lay flat to dry No tumble drying Spot-clean between washes Brush surface to refresh

Boiled wool outerwear needs washing far less often than most clothing. Surface dirt and most light soiling can be brushed off once the wool has dried completely. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and wool wash, then air dry. For a full wash, hand wash in cold water with a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan, Sonett wool wash, or similar), or use your machine’s delicate/wool cycle with cold water only. Never wash in hot water — the wool is already fulled, but heat and agitation can cause additional shrinkage and distortion. Press water out gently; do not wring. Lay flat on a clean towel to reshape, and allow to air dry away from direct heat. Do not tumble dry. Disana does not recommend washing before first wear for certified organic garments — the certifications ensure the fabric is free from harmful residues.

To protect the coat from moths during storage, keep it in a sealed breathable cotton bag with natural cedar or lavender. Plastic storage bags trap moisture and are not appropriate for wool.

Questions About the Disana Women’s Boiled Wool Parka

Is boiled wool the same as regular wool? What makes it different?

Boiled wool is knitted wool fabric that has been subjected to controlled hot water washing and agitation, causing the fibers to felt together into a dense, stable cloth. The result is meaningfully different from regular knitted or woven wool: it is thicker, firmer, naturally wind-resistant, and sheds water far better. It also holds its shape without the structure of a woven lining. Disana’s boiled wool for adult outerwear is produced at 420 g/m² — a heavy, outerwear-grade weight that provides substantial warmth and weather protection.

Will this coat keep me warm in below-freezing temperatures?

Yes, for most people when properly layered. Boiled wool at 420 g/m² provides significant insulation, and the wind-blocking structure of the fulled fabric prevents cold air from penetrating. In sub-zero conditions, pair it with a merino wool base layer and a knit mid-layer underneath. The design is specifically built with room for this. In very extreme cold (sustained below -10°C / 14°F), you may want additional insulation underneath or a heavier mid-layer.

Is the exterior scratchy? Is this suitable for people with wool sensitivity?

The exterior surface of boiled wool has a firm, textured hand that is neither soft like knitted merino nor harsh like coarse lambswool — it is somewhere in between, with a slightly brushed or felted texture. Most people do not find it uncomfortable. Because the coat is unlined, the interior surface contacts your clothing (base layer or mid-layer) rather than your skin directly. Reviewers with sensitive skin have generally found it non-irritating when worn over a layer. If you react strongly to wool fiber, the contact is primarily indirect.

How water-resistant is this coat? Can I wear it in the rain?

The coat is naturally water-resistant due to the density of the boiled wool and the residual lanolin in the fiber. Light rain and snow bead and roll off; brief exposure to heavier precipitation is generally manageable. Sustained downpours will eventually saturate the outer layer. This is not a coated waterproof jacket — it performs like a high-quality, heavy boiled wool coat, which for most cold-weather use cases is entirely sufficient. The water resistance is inherent to the wool and does not diminish from washing the way synthetic DWR coatings do.

What does GOTS certification mean? What about IVN Best?

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading international certification for organic textiles. It covers both the organic origin of the raw fiber and the entire processing chain — including dyes, finishes, and labor conditions — with annual third-party audits. IVN Best (from the International Association of Natural Textile Industry) is even more stringent: it requires 100% certified organic natural fibers throughout with no exceptions, and sets the most demanding ecological standards for processing. Disana holds both certifications for this parka. The hardware (zipper, any metal closures) is confirmed nickel-free and free of heavy metals.

What is kbT, and does the wool in this coat meet that standard?

kbT stands for “kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung” — certified organic livestock farming. It means the merino sheep whose wool is used in this parka were raised under certified organic husbandry standards, with strict requirements for animal welfare, grazing conditions, and prohibition of harmful veterinary chemicals. Disana sources organic merino from Argentina specifically because mulesing (a controversial practice common in conventional Australian merino farming) is not practiced there. The IVN Best certification that covers this garment requires kbT-compliant fiber sourcing.

How do I choose the right size? The sizing seems to run very large.

The parka is intentionally cut oversized to accommodate layering — this is a design choice, not a sizing error. Reviewers who typically wear a US medium have fit comfortably in an XS with full layering room. We recommend measuring your actual bust and hip circumference and selecting the size whose EU body measurement range includes your measurements. If you are between sizes, size down rather than up. If sleeve length is a concern (taller buyers have noted the sleeves run slightly short), factor that in. Because this is a Final Sale item with no returns, take the time to measure before ordering.

How often does boiled wool need to be washed?

Much less often than most outerwear. Wool fiber is naturally bacteriostatic and odor-resistant, meaning the odor-causing conditions that develop in synthetic and cotton garments do not occur as readily. Surface dirt on boiled wool can be brushed off once dry. Spot-cleaning handles most day-to-day marks. A full wash is typically needed only a few times per season at most. Disana specifically advises washing wool garments as infrequently as possible and airing between wears instead. Overwashing is the most common cause of wool garment damage.

    They are absolutely perfect!

Published by Equanimity on Jan 23rd 2024

I have been slowly replacing my clothes with natural fibers and I am so grateful I found this company offering wool and wool/silk clothes. The styles and quality are outstanding. They are exactly what I have been looking for. I ordered both style jackets and they are perfect. I also bought other items such as socks, gloves, panties, and long underwear tops and bottoms. I am planning on purchasing a few wool throws as well!
