About our brands
Three wool brands, plus organic cotton from Sense Organics
Our baby and kids tops collection covers both wool and organic cotton options. Three German family-run wool manufacturers contribute the wool pieces — each specializing in a different construction — and Sense Organics rounds out the collection with GOTS-certified organic cotton tops for warmer-weather wear and everyday use. All pieces use certified organic fibers processed without harsh chemicals.
Engel
German family business since 1927. Source for thin merino and wool-silk base layer tops, long-sleeve undershirts, and bodysuits. IVN BEST certified — the strictest organic textile standard available.
Reiff
Family-run knitting company in southwestern Germany. Source for warm wool fleece tops, knitted sweatshirts, and cozy everyday tops — made in-house using certified organic yarns.
Disana
German specialists in boiled wool since the 1970s. Source for structured boiled wool tops and special pieces that complement the lighter options. GOTS certified.
Sense Organics is a German brand specializing in GOTS-certified organic cotton for babies and children. Their tops round out our wool collection with breathable cotton options — ideal for warmer weather, layering over wool base layers, and everyday play. Sense Organics is Fair Wear Foundation certified, with a strong focus on ethical and sustainable manufacturing.
What to know
Buying tips for baby and kids tops
Starting wardrobe: mix wool and cotton across seasons
A practical tops wardrobe balances wool and cotton for different uses: 2-3 thin merino or wool-silk tops from Engel for layering and year-round wear, 1-2 warmer wool pieces from Reiff or Disana for cool-weather use, plus 3-5 organic cotton tops from Sense Organics for warmer weather and everyday play. Because wool needs washing far less often than cotton (every 3-5 wears instead of daily), a smaller wool wardrobe stretches further than you might expect, while cotton tops can be used in heavier rotation.
Sizing by height, not age
European children's sizing for both wool and cotton tops is based on height in centimeters rather than age. Size 56 fits newborns (50-56 cm), 68 fits roughly 3-6 months, 92 fits a child about 92 cm tall (around 2 years), and sizes continue up through 176. Measure your child's height flat and pick the size closest to that number. Thin base-layer tops fit close to the body — size up if between sizes. Warmer fleece, knit tops, and cotton tops have more room built in and can fit true to size.
Choose your fabric: wool vs organic cotton
Wool tops (Engel base layers, Reiff fleece, Disana boiled wool) are best for temperature regulation, odor resistance, layering, and cold-weather wear. Organic cotton tops (Sense Organics) are best for warmer weather, babies who overheat easily, frequent-changes situations, and as a breathable layer over wool base layers. Most families end up with both in rotation — wool for the cold part of the year and layering, cotton for summer and everyday play when more frequent changes are expected.

Common questions about baby and kids tops
Should I choose wool or organic cotton tops for my child?
Both have real advantages and most families use both. Merino wool tops are better for temperature regulation, odor resistance, layering without bulk, cold-weather wear, and multi-child longevity — and they need washing far less often. Organic cotton tops are better for warmer weather, children who overheat easily, everyday play where frequent changes are expected, and situations where machine washing every day matters. Wool also comes with higher upfront cost and more careful wash requirements. For most families, a practical wardrobe mixes both: wool for layering and cool weather, cotton for warm weather and high-rotation use.
What's the difference between a merino base-layer top and a wool fleece top?
Merino interlock base-layer tops (from Engel) are thin, smooth, and designed to layer under other clothing or wear alone in mild temperatures. They regulate temperature without adding bulk. Wool fleece tops (from Reiff) are plushier and warmer, usually worn on their own or as a mid-layer between a base layer and outerwear. Most families end up with both styles — thinner tops for daily layering and warmer tops for cooler conditions. More on wool fabric types →
How many tops should I buy for my child?
Most parents find a mixed starting wardrobe of 5 to 8 tops covers everyday needs: 2-3 thin wool base-layer tops for layering, 1-2 warmer wool pieces for cooler weather, and 3-5 organic cotton tops for everyday play and warmer conditions. Because wool is naturally odor-resistant and needs washing every 3-5 wears, fewer wool pieces are needed than with cotton. Cotton tops typically need more pairs since they're worn in higher rotation for warmer-weather play.
Is wool too warm for my child to wear indoors?
No. Merino wool is temperature-regulating — it breathes when warm and insulates when cool, so a thin merino or wool-silk base-layer top stays comfortable indoors across a wide range of room temperatures. For indoor-heated winter conditions, a single thin merino top is often more comfortable than a thicker cotton shirt. Heavier wool fleece and boiled wool tops are best for outdoor use or cool indoor conditions. In warmer environments, organic cotton tops are a better choice.
How do I choose the right size?
European children's sizing for both wool and cotton is based on height in centimeters rather than age. Measure your child's height flat and pick the European size closest to that number. Size 56 fits newborns, 68 fits 3-6 months, 74 fits 6-9 months, 80 fits about 12 months, and sizes continue in 6 cm increments. Thin base-layer tops fit close to the body — size up if between sizes. Fleece, knit, and cotton tops have more room and can fit true to size. See our full sizing guide →
How often should I wash these tops?
Wool tops need washing far less often than cotton — typically every 3 to 5 wears, thanks to wool's natural odor resistance. Airing the garment out between wears handles most situations. Hand-wash wool in cool water with a wool-safe (enzyme-free) detergent and lay flat to dry. Cotton tops from Sense Organics follow standard cotton care — machine-washable, typically washed after each wear or when visibly soiled, and can be tumble-dried on low heat. The different care requirements are one reason to keep both materials in rotation. See our complete wool care guide →
Can I return tops if the size is wrong?
Yes. Wool and cotton tops can be returned within our standard return window as long as they are unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with tags attached. For best fit, we recommend measuring your child before ordering and checking each brand's size chart on the individual product page. See our returns page for full details →
